that’s frightening….(first?)

That creature on the right is no ordinary Chinese Crested mix. That is the late great Sam, several-times winner of the annual “world’s ugliest dog” competition. Sam is no longer with us - he passed away at 14 in 2005 - but I’m sure he’s still alive in the dreams (or nightmares) of a lot of people on teh interbubes.

Seriously. Google “Japanese Chin” and tell me how that could possibly be even part Chin, especially after also Googling “Chinese Crested”. That’s the famous Sam. I don’t think he’s even a mix, just an atypically ugly Chinese Crested.

Being a proud owner of a Chinese Crested, and attending several Dog Shows admiring show-quality Cresteds, I must say that this photo makes a particularly good case that not everyone can breed dogs.

My understanding was that Sam was the SWEETEST dog (most cresteds are very sweet), so don’t take this as a slam against him, his owners, or his breeder.

Sad. That dog obviously has some kind of dental disease and cataracts.

I showed this to my kids - they weren’t sure which creature was scarier.
I mean, sure, the crypt keeper thingy is gross - but you wouldn’t ever find one o’ those in yer home. Now, a dog, you might…. imagine, just IMAGINE being woken up in the morning with that…. vision in yer face.

Sam was fairly old when that pic was taken, and he was in a fire when he was younger, causing scarring and corneal damage, as well as having dental problems common to the breed. Cresteds are a little different looking, but they’re actually very nice little dogs. I think it’s the fogged over eyes and missing teeth that give the resemblance. Although, for the record, Sam’s tongue is pulled back in the way dogs do when they’re yawning, they are unable to growl with their tongues on the bottom of their mouths, they have to press their tongue to the roof to snarl.

Gives you insight into the reasons Asian’s started eating dog.

The dog is NOT a Japanese Chin, please correct. That’s a Chinese hairless crested. Chins are beautiful little dogs that exhibit a lot of catlike behaviour and very much loved by cat owners.
