  1. gdw says:

If you thought of this before Iron Man, it would have been a good one. As it stands, it’s beyond obvious.

    • reversedpolarity says:

actually not really, the original nick fury was white and looked nothing like slj. So if you thought of this before seeing the extra footage on iron man, it wouldn’t have made any sense.

      • Dan says:

I don’t think Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury really fitting, not just because he’s black. First of all I can’t think of a single time in the history of comic books that it’s ever been a good idea to change a character’s race as it presents continuity issues. That aside though, I feel that Internet culture has killed my ability to take Samuel Jackson seriously and Internet culture is part of why X-3 sucked. (Let me qualify that by saying “I’m the Juggernaut, Bitch!” case and point.) Snakes on a Plane was an other good example of Internet culture producing a terrible movie– starring with Samuel L. Jackson. Whenever he speaks I and everyone else are just going to hear “Enough is enough! I have had it with these mother******* snakes on this mother******* plane!”

        • Dan says:

The juggernaut used to say “I’m the juggernaut bitch” all the time in the comic book. Way before the little internet video thing came out.

        • Wesley B says:

They didn’t change his race. They revealed way back in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Winter Annual in 1993 that the Nick Fury made such a good agent because of his disguise abilities. A flashback revealed that he told Colonel John Wraith (head of the Weapon X program) that he was really “a black man in white face” before he killed him. He wanted to tell someone, but no one could know yet, so it made sense to tell someone you’re going to kill.

          • Dan says:

That makes WAY more sense than what I thought. Okay, I take back half of what I said earlier. I’m no stranger to comic books but I’m not an “comic book guy” so I was first made aware of the change in Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Nick Fury was white as a colonel but had an unlockable uniform where he became and black and a general, which made it seem as if he has some super power to get black and promoted. Nick Fury in that game is already a perplexing character because he has guns and gernades that scaresly tickle foes but he can at level one literally choke a steel pipe and shatter it with vastly more debris that wolverine’s claws, but perhaps I digress. From that game it woudln’t have surprised me if he had gama radiation induced affirmative action powers or something similarly retarded. It’s not what I would call a good video game for Marvel cannon, or anything else for that matter but I digress again.
Now if he was always black and at some point he got promoted and at around that time dropped the disguise that’s fairly reasonable. Once you get to a certain rank you don’t have to undercover work.

        • Ruin says:

I disagree. Nick FURY, and Samuel L. Jackson is usually always pretty pissed off.

      • Emilio says:

Actually you are completely wrong Cap’n High Horse. Nick fury was revamped for the “Ultimates Universe” Afew years back and was BASED on SLJ. So this IS beyond obvious and you are waaaaay behind the times.

      • Joe says:

Actually, Nick Fury has been drawn as SLJ for a while now. With the obvious intent of luring SLJ into playing the role in the eventual Avengers movie. There’s actually a joke about it in the Ultimates series one (I forget the exact issue) in which the Ultimates (the new name for the Avengers) are sitting around musing about who would play them in a movie. Nick Fury gets a close up and say “Mr SLJ of course!” it’s kinda cute in an über dork sort of way.

      • Racche says:

He’s based on the Ultimates version of Nick Fury, who was purposefully made to look like Samuel L. Jackson. They even talk about it in the comic. Fail.

      • anono says:

actually, they based the ultimate universe nick fury after samuel l jackson’s portrayal of shaft so yeah. it is pretty obvious

      • Anthony says:

yes the original nick fury WAS white
but they actually based the black nick fury off of Samuel L Jackson
hense why he is playing Nick Fury in the upcoming movie….

      • zack says:

actually yes, the ORIGINAL nick fury was white. however in the early 90’s they “rebooted” his look, modeling it after Samuel L. Jackson. so yes, it is a given that he looks like fury and was chosen to play him in the upcoming avengers movies.

      • grafixx says:

nick fury from the ultimate averngers series was actually based on samuel l. jackson.

are they making an ultimates movie? who knows? they’ve only put out movies on most of the key members already. all we’re missing is ant man, captain america, and thor.

      • Tater says:

This is an alternate version of Nick Fury from a parallel universe of sorts in the Marvel Universe

    • Dave says:

Actually, years ago when the Ultimate universe started, Marvel paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the rights to use Samuel L. Jackson’s image as their Ultimate Nick Fury. Which is why they’ve got him playing him in the movie.

So in a way, this one’s really as obvious as the Superman/Clark Kent one.

    • Eden says:

Agreed! If we hadn’t already seen him as Nick Fury, it might have been funny.

    • qwerty says:

      @gdw:

It wouldn’t matter whether he thought of this before or after Iron Man. Ultimate Nick Fury was created with Samuel L. Jackson in mind.

    • Wolfe, Bryan says:

My Ultimate Avengers (Live Action)Casting Call:
      Captain Amerca-John Cena
      Iron Man-Robert Downey Jr
      Giant Man-Josh Lucas
      The Falcon-Morris Chestnut
      Wasp-Lucy Liu
      Black Widow-Milla Jojovich
      Hulk-Ed Norton of course
      Hawkeye-Justin Hartley
Thor-Zakk Wylde, Tyler Mane, or Triple H
      Nick Fury-Samuel L. Jackson

  2. Fluffy says:

That version of Nick Fury was actually based on SLJ, who is now playing him in movies :3

  3. Armand says:

Nick Fury belongs to Marvel, not DC

  4. flower says:

It was intentional, even before Iron man…

  5. Emperor Tomato Catsup says:

Can we please stop doing these “totally looks like” things where the resemblance is intentional?

  6. Ceefax says:

Samuel L Jackson TOTALLY LOOKS LIKE Jules Winnfield from pulp Fiction.

  7. Jebus says:

…but Nick Fury was white…what did I miss?!?!?

    • dustin says:

Marvel recently did a reboot of their “marvel universe.” This initial started everything over from day 1. The new continuim is called the “Marvel Ultimate Unviverse.” Things tend to be a little more realistic in this world. “Realistic” of course being applied to comics is a bit of an oxymoron though. :)

      • S_O says:

If by “recently” you mean “seven years ago”, then yes, that’s what happened.

And about the pic… well… it’s just like those “cats named after actors becouse they kinda look like them totally look like those actors” pics. Some find it funny, me, not so much.

    • Mike says:

durr, you missed the sub title on the photo “ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE”

      =

      ULTIMATE Nick Fury.

Not the same as the regular Nick Fury.

  8. dustin says:

That being the case, some things are different. Nick Fury is black, Colossus is gay, Juggernaut was part of the Weapon X program and didn’t get his powers from the Crystal of Cytorrak, etc

    • Jane St.Clair says:

Wait a minute, Colossus is gay?! Man…

      • Wesley B says:

        Of course he’s gay!
Why do you think they moved the Xavier Institute from Massachusetts to San Francsico. It was the only way to keep his secret marriage plotline (coming out in Novmeber) “legal.” The original group wanted to move to Florida, but in the end they decided his civil rights were worth relocating our west.

    • Happyheathen says:

Actually he did get his powers from the cristal. In one of the ultimate x-men comics, gambit charged said crystal and flung it at Jugs, giving him greater power than what he had before. Yay for geek powers!!!

  9. bspinky says:

Could also say Keenan Ivory Wayans looks like him too :o

  10. Jayson says:

You’re all racist for saying any any black person looks like another black person when they’re not the same person.

(I don’t believe this to be true, but I might as well say it before someone else does.)

  11. SKW says:

Ultimate Nick Fury was based on Sam Jackson long before the Iron Man movie.

  12. Dmitri Molotov says:

Um… actually Ultimate Nick Fury’s appearance was based on Samuel L Jackson.

  13. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA says:

Samuel L. Jackson IS Nick Fury.

  14. hehehehe says:

they don’t really look alike to me but whatever!!!

  15. Ashley says:

Thats like posting a pic of him next to Shaft (remake) and saying OMG THEY LOOK THE SAME!!! lol

  16. jacob says:

I was told marvel asked samuel for permission to base the new nick fury on him

  17. Alex says:

I was really hoping that someone was being ironic here… if that had been the case it would’ve been funny. But the rumours that the Ultimate Nick Fury is based on SLJ were around yonks before the Iron Man movie.

    Fail

  18. D'oh says:

Samual is way more badass (looks at Shaft), definatly.

  19. LineAS says:

Actually, according to the makers of the Ultimates they contacted Samuel L. Jackson and asked if they could “make” their Nick Fury in his image. He was designed to look like Samuel L Jackson so in my opinion this look alike is very “d’uh…” in that aspect. If you were into the comic you probably know this already.

  20. sayoko bizen says:

What? No fighting for the “first” post? I should have known it would start off with some sort of debate about what issue the character changed, down to the line by line drawing in each panel of whatever Marvel or DC Universe and blahblahblah of infinity knows what.

Gah. Comic book geeks are so bloody full of life fail.

  21. Derek says:

Sam Jackson had to give permission to Marvel Comics to use his likeness for Nick Fury, so of course they look alike, THEY IZ SUPPOSD T2O

  22. Divided by zero says:

According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, Ultimate Nick Fury was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson, actually.

  23. Name says:

As others have said, a while back they did a remake of the marvel universe where everything was “ultimate”. Ultimate Fury was black and was based on SLJ. However before they could do so they had to get the OK from SLJ himself. SLF agreed on one term, that if they ever made a movie, SLJ would get to play Fury.

    Or that’s what i’m told

  24. Spidey says:

So wait, if I’m reading all of these comments correctly…Nick Fury was purposley drawn to look like SLJ? Is that correct? There should probably be another 30-40 posts repeating that so I don’t forget.

  25. Jasper says:

He looks like Nick Fury because the artists asked if they could base Ultimate Nick Fury on Jackson…..Wikipedia it :D

  26. Anonymous says:

I’m pretty much waiting for someone to come out with “Norman Osborn totally looks like Tommy Lee Jones” now. I mean seriously, it’s not really worth even posting these pics when its clearly a take off. They might as well post “Christian Bale totally looks like Bruce Wayne” or “Madonna totally looks like a skanky whore”.

    • Emefem says:

What the hell’s wrong with you; Norman Osborn looks like an orangutan.
But you are right, these pics are very ludicrous and they might as well put
“the governor of california looks like the Terminator.”

  27. dj says:

thats because this nick fury WAS based on sam l!! marvel even paid him likeness rights!

    • Dylan says:

      Thank you SOMEONE gets it!!!
All of the black nick fury’s in the comic books are based on Sam. Like dj said, marvel payed him and everything. That’s why he is nick fury in the upcoming nick fury movie and iron man 2.

  28. seraphrevan says:

You’ve all got it backwards! Samuel L. Jackson looks like Nick Fury, not the other way around! SLJ saw an extremely early concept of Nick Fury as a child, and decided to gradually mold his own appearance into that of his childhood hero’s: Nick Fury.

  29. Marie says:

Stan Lee has admitted he started drawing Nick Fury based on SLJ. That’s why they cast him in the new Avengers movie.

  30. breathilizer says:

David Bowie totally looks like Ziggy Stardust :P

  31. breathilizer says:

Miss marie, Stan Lee doesn’t draw comics, he’s a writer for comic books. And he’s never, to my knowledge, worked on Avengers.

  32. Atonementvector says:

Nick Fury was modeled after Sammy J! That’s why in one of the nw movies thy begged Sammy to play Nick. He said yes,.

  33. MSCR says:

Fury was cooler before. He kinda looked as though mr fantastic was slowly turning into solid snake.

  34. Kel says:

Nick Fury looks more like DMX

  35. Tay says:

    Gasp!
Good job! You stated the obvious!

  36. linz says:

maybe this is cause i’ve got a lot of comic book geeks for friends, but you didn’t know that the cartoonist of the marvel ultimates universe contacted Sam Jackson for that very purpose, of using his image as the new Nick Fury? that was part of the press release for the ultimates before it was even published.

AND that’s why jackson played him in the Ironman movie

  37. jp says:

Comic Book heroes changing race, and even gender, are fairly commonplace. Just look at all the black and female Green Lanterns.

  38. EV says:

As it’s been said before, when Marvel remade Nick Fury for the Ultimate universe (Ultimate Spiderman, Ultimate Ironman, re-do’s of all their characters) they made him look like Nick Fury, they even got Sammie’s permission.

  39. al exander says:

he looks more like terry crews to me….check it out :-)

  40. YouFAILED says:

    FAIL

  41. bo bo says:

i don’t think this one counts
    considering that like ten yrs
    ago marvel payed jackson
    for the rights to re-design
    the fury character after his
    own image.

  42. solo piano says:

nah, i disagree on this one.
