Mike Judge was a physics student at UCSD. The word in the physics dept there is that the characters are based off two profs there (in their younger days), David Kleinfeld (http://crick-jacobs.salk.edu/People/images/kleinfeld.jpg) and James Branson (http://hepweb.ucsd.edu/~branson/jb46r.jpg). If you’ve ever heard the two guys talk/laugh, the resemblance is… crazy.
