The vest and shadows are like identical… It’s hard to believe these two images were created independent of each other.
I can’t imagine they were drawn indenpendantly. Given the drawings practically overlap I have to believe that the Bill Rizer artwork was just a takeoff on the most famous action star of the day. Given that this picture which is from Predator (1987) which came out the same year as the first Contra it is easy to assume the Bill pic was practically sketched over the Arnie still.
They’re definitely not independent. The company even admitted it sometime in the 90s. It’s pretty much traced, till you get to the heads. But you knew that.
And yes, the other is based off of Stallone, too.
the Rizer pic was drawn specifically from the predator poster. it’s been stated. for crying out loud, look at the vein on Arnie’s right arm and the vein on Rizer. You’d have to be simple to think these were independant.

That’s likely. On a website called Encyclopedia Dramatica (nsfw) I saw an article about tracing and it showed a gif where a bunch of the Contra characters morphed into action stars, Arnold and Rambo being two of them.
Contra and its successors were heavily influenced by the action movies of the time, in particular Predator, Rambo and Aliens. The characters depicted on the cover for the North American version of Contra resemble Arnold Schwarzenegger as Alan “Dutch” Schaefer from Predator, and Sylvester Stallone in First Blood
Wow. A movie publicity shot looks just like the video game publicity drawing that was ripped-off of the movie publicity shot. Thanks, Captain Obvious. Next you can start pointing out that actors look like the characters they portray, or that portraits look like the people the portraits were drawn or. Or maybe that people look like the pictures taken of them.

If you take the headband off the Contra guy, and just move the forehead down to connect with the rest of the face, the dimensions match Arnie’s noggin exactly. The Contra image was a ripoff.

They’re not independent Konami used tahat image on the North American market jacket and promotional material when they re-leased in 1988 the year after Predator used that for it’s promotional art and was just comming to home video… Do you really think they didn’t see the movie and know exactly what was going on? Yeah right, they were capitalizing on the movie about American commandos fighting an alien in the jungle…
I do believe that Bill Rizer was based off of the Governator. I really do.
These days, when Der Governator takes his custom made, ultra tailored shirts off, he looks more like a shar pei.
It’s called scrap art. Anytime an ad agency or graphic design firm farms out an illustration to a commercial artist, they provide “scap art” to the artist in order to provide a reference point for the artist to work with. Sometimes the artist has less imagination and creativity than he or she should have, or he or she wants to be sure that the client gets exactly what they want, so they follow the scrap art to a T. This is what happens then.
