Well, Cthulhu in general looks like a Mindflayer. So that makes Davy Jones looks like one, by extension. But that’s an awesome thing to look like, no? BRAINS!

My son (age 7 at the time) saw one of the Davey Jones Halloween masks at the costume shop last year, and yelled, “Hey mom!!! They’ve got Cthulhu masks!!!”

Well, the design team for POTC stated that they did take aspects of Cthulhu in the design process of Davy Jones…
There’s a resemblance there, and Cthulhu is a likely source for the tentacle beard, but I think Davy Jones looks more like Ka D’Argo from the Farscape TV series:

Cthulhu is a being created by HP Lovecraft. He is a priest (a very, very tall one) who holds the power to awaken the Great Old Ones, who will do some crazy stuff. He can also influence the minds of humans. He has his own cult, which is spread across the planet and is dedicated to his awakening (he rests in R’lyeh, a submerged city).
Sorry if I left anything out, read the story a year ago and forgot some of it…
