I’ve always wondered if that was the intention, but they were marketed to a generation that’s most likely never seen Gremlins.
Furbies came out when I was in 5th grade and I had one. I also watched Gremlins several times as a child. Maybe that just makes me a cool kid?
i think once the mass media feels that the generation has forgotten about something they remarket somethnig with a new name.

I have a Furby that looks much more like a mogwai than the one in the picture.
Finally someone freaking acknowledged that Gizmo wasn’t a gremlin but a mogwai. They don’t turn into gremlins until they get wet.
