The difference is that Cab had talent.
Yes, yes and yes. They may LOOK alike, but there is no way you can compare the two otherwise.
Morris Day in “Purple Rain” reminded me of Cab Calloway more than Prince does, but I’d like to take up your challenge:
1. Both good-looking
2. Both sexy and charismatic in a way that transcends looks
3. Both talented
4. Both possessed of a unique, innovative musical style
5. Both incredible live performers (no, I’ve never seen Cab live, but I’ve seen his live performances on film, both vintage and in the Blues Brothers movie) with a high-energy, almost manic performing style
and I’m not sure, but I think
6. Both tenors
7. BOTH LIKE IT IN THE BUTT!!!!
Well how about their dancing???
so true that i could die. no. wait. . . so true that prince should die. yeah. that’s it.
the difference is that Cab Calloway is in black and white, and Prince is kinda black and kinda white
LOL LOL!!!
Brilliant!!
No no no, is other way round.
Music Theory 101, Calloway’s Law – for every Hi De Hi De Hi De Hi there must be an equal and corresponding Ho De Ho De Ho De Ho.
Well done.
Don’t tell John Fogerty!
[i.e., his song "The old man down the road']
Prince is a pale imitation of Cab, rather.
This should be: Prince totally looks like Cab Calloway.
Let’s get the chronology and influence in the right order.
Agreed – I don’t think I had ever seen a picture of a young Cab Calloway. The facial similarity is pretty uncanny. Talent-wise, I agree Calloway is far superior. And Prince is now just Prince, not “the artist formerly…” That was all due to a legal battle.
I have to disagree. I love Cab Calloway, he was amazing. But Prince is every bit as talented. Kooky yes, but incredible stage presence.
Exactly.
I llike them both. Good music for good times.
A fine opinion, but it’s just an opinion. If Prince can still seem that talented in 2060 and after he’s dead, then we have some similar timelines to compare upon. I think he will be,but until that time, we have no idea of what his staying power would be.
Regardless, Cab was first, and was influential much longer so the comparison should still be the other way around.
People don’t always realize that Prince wrote all the parts and sometimes played all the instruments on several of his albums. He is far more than a powerful stage presence, he also has the musical knowledge and technical ability behind his music. He has brought different genres of music and different types of fans together in good ways. I think Cab Calloway is the better actor, funnier and I love his music. But I think Prince mastered the modern ballad with “Nothing Compares 2 U” and will be remembered for a long time. I think the two are about equal in talent.
Yes! “Are you Hep to the Jive?”
If not, then We, the Cats, Shall Hep Ya.
noooo
If you do not think Prince is talented, you are just plain wrong. Different styles of music in totally different times, but both masters in their own way.
There is a very uncanny resemblance. Also, in all seriousness, wasn’t Prince the child of a mixed race family? Black and white, indeed.
Who said Prince wasn’t talented?
Italian-American mother and African-American father, IIRC.
Rihanna looks more like Prince.
Second that. Even if you don’t like his music, you have to admit that he is extremely talented…
I would have to second the musical genius part. And I would love to see him in concert but I live in Nerdbraska
If he has been in concert in Iowa, then he has been in concert somewhere in Nebraska. Hell, the man is from Minnesota. I believe he still has a residence there and randomly does small private concerts that are unannounced at his recording studio.
His recording studio is unannounced?
Not sure what you mean. He will have unannounced jam sessions, or used to anyway, at local clubs and his recording studio (Paisley Park, if memory serves me.)
Not sure if that is as common anymore, but it used to be. Sit the guy behind a piano or guitar and just let him jam out. Pretty fantastic stuff.
I’m no monarchist… but I’d marry into Prince’s royal family.
I have only been able to see him live once. What a performer. Great live music, amazing band and unbelieveable guitar player.
The guy is odd, which is kind of his trademark, but his music is amazing.
just to be anal retentive i have to point this out–isn’t it The Artist FORMERLY Known as Prince? and doesn’t he just go by “The Artist” now?
No, as was already mentioned. He is again Prince and has been for a few years.
Wouldn’t that make him the Artist Currently Known as Prince?
Oh, I thought he was “The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince”.
You know, since he changed *back* to Prince.
Zheesh.
Cab looks like Prince in this picture but in general they look nothing alike.
Cab>Prince
.
Love me some Prince!! He is a genius & always will be. There is no one that he compares to.
Saw the little Princely feller at an impromptu gig at a local bar after the big concert event. Played rock ‘n’ roll & blues guitaqr, no singing, no breaks, in a white shirt, black levis & converse shoes, on what looked to be a Robert Smith Signature Model Electric Guitar by Schecter for TWO FREAKING HOURS.
Cab was cool cool cool. Prince is massively underrated.
Oh my God that must have been AWESOME.
This was what I was talking about. That would be one of those moments that just rock out. The guy has huge musical chops, but everyone thinks of him as the “Rasberry Beret” guy, or the ass-less pants.
He was a freak and didn’t care what people thought. Totally amazing performer. He can play a multitude of instruments and has to have what, a 3 or 4 octave range? Both great, both innovative.
Saw him live in 2004 …front row …went 2 stage & gave him flowers… been following his music since 1978. No one can or ever will compare to Prince !!!
And, I second that!!!
Prince is a total musician. PLays everything. Cab, giving him his props, he was great for what he did, but, the is no other Prince!!
I think Prince is going for the Cab Calloway on purpose look, hon. His jazz is defidently comparable with the old masters.
If my destiny does-n’t find me soon…
I’ll die in your arms,
under the cherry moon!
No he doesn’t.
Both are unable to grow a moustache, there the likeness ends.
Prince currently lives in Toronto where his kids attend local public schools.
Mind you, these are public schools in an area of multi-million dollar homes…
I think they are both very talented with Calloway breaking through the racism of his times in a way that Prince did not have to. But Prince has a wider range of gifts than Calloway was able to show.
Remember, however, that is Calloway’s heyday, films with black performers were edited so that their performances could be snipped out for segregated /Southern cinemas.
Other way around, dumb-ass. Prince totally looks like Cab Calloway. Understand who came first. Dumb ass.
prince and cab might have composed something nice if cab was still around.
