Newly Discovered Planet Totally Looks Like the Eye Of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings

Funny, I thought the same thing when I saw that pic on Astronomy Picture of the Day website the other day! Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought it.
there’s a newly discovered planet? anyone got a link?
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap081114.html
That’s not precisely the newly discovered planet, that’s the cloud of debris around Fomalhaut that *contains* the newly discovered planet.
NEEEEEEEEEERRRD!
My company’s owner, the Epic Nerd, Bill…yeah, he invented, created and made money off you for almost everything you’re using to type on to make fun of nerds, let alone look at this nerd-made website. Oh…wait, I’m sorry, how much do you make per year comparison to nerds? Probably not much.
awsome burn!
*cheers for nerds everywhere*
Too bad i’m using a Mac to type this comment…Bill is a geek anyways, there is a distinct difference between nerds and geeks.
…and I’ll bet my last dollar that you’ve played HALO=bungee=microsoft=they work in the next building
oh, what was that? the sweet sound of your FAIL? I’m just being a raving bitch.
Maybe the owner of your company should have invented you a sense of humor or the ability to pick up on a Simpson’s reference when quoted verbatim.
The most ironic thing about all of this is that I am, in fact, and engineer. Lighten up.
I do recall saying I was just being a raving bitch. Maybe you should engineer yourself a sense of humor as well.
Try to understand. There are 2 kinds of college students: jocks and nerds. As a jock, it is my duty to give nerds a hard time.
What ’bout emos? They’re not smart, I.e nerds.
And as a geeky goth who takes karate, it is my duty to kick your arse.
Dude just w8 until reunion. the nerds will be the ones raking in the dough.
don’t forget the band geeks
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRDD THAT CAN’T RECOGNIZE JOKES!
You do you know it wasn’t a complement?
(You have Conan O’Brien to thank for the awesome)
lol u pwned them :3

and to think, i used to beat guys up that knew this…
you little weasel.
And now you suck their sewage, Joe Jock.
OMG- I TOTALLY said the same thing when I was at work and this came on the television…my co-workers all thought I was the biggest nerd. I’m glad I’m not the only one!
Wow, that’s like two good TLL’s this month. Whats happening to this site?
I KNEW it looked familiar!!!!!
Uhhh .. the image on the left isn’t a planet. The planet is actually a tiny spot on that image, which is not even visible on this scaled version. So the image title “Newly discovered planet” is very, very misleading.
Know-it-all fail.
*cough* Ahem. Somebody here knew it all FIRST. *points up*
Sassyviolet?
yes?
Way to rip off Geekologie.com, guy.
Planet Fail
When I was your age growing up, Pluto was still a planet……
Pluto was still a planet for anyone considered ‘growing up’ until late 2006.
pluto still is, and will always be a planet in my book =P
does that make me closed or open minded?
Both, actually. Pluto still is a planet- just a dwarf planet.
DearPluto,
No matter what everyone else says about you, you will always be my favorite tiny planet. And my favorite cartoon dog, even though Brian on Family Guy is funnier, you were my first.
Love,
Hell Hath No Fury
Actually looks a lot like “Ur”anus
Might want to stock up on Preparation H then
I wrote this when I saw this pic on io9.com lol!
holy crap, We’ve Found the Eye Of Terror!!!
it’s only a matter of time until Daemons and chaos find us!
Everyone, RUN!!!!
For the Emperor! Drive them back into the Warp!! *charge*
Warhammer 40k?
I do hope so, cause if it’s a Star Wars ref, it is somewhat misplaced…..
HOLY SHIT
Really? ‘Cause I was thinking more along the lines of, “OH SHIT!”
I already made a better version of this with an *accurate* title.
Ummmm….. no sorry. The one above is much better if only for the fact that it’s rotated so it mimics the shape, yours is at a weird angle so it no longer looks like the eye at all.
The problem is that if it’s rotated, it gets those black cut-off lines, just like this front-page image has. And “it no longer looks like the eye at all?” If your spatial abilities suck so badly that you can’t mentally rotate a two-dimensional object forty-five degrees, that’s your problem.
I think it’s mostly because he’s suffering form an EPIC BURN
The only “burn” is the same one others mentioned: You can’t even *see* the planet in the image, so the caption is a fail. It’s not as though I’m the only one who made this comparison; in fact, someone on Ars Technica gave me the idea, and I told him I’d make a look-alike out of it. Afterwards, I found out that I was about the thousandth person to make a comparative image of the two. If someone with a properly captioned picture would have made it, I would have been happy, not burned. It’s not as though I think I’m the center of astronomical parodies everywhere.
But if you want to think a dust disc is a planet, enjoy yourself. I’ll be sure to submit a picture of a crowd that’s so far away as to make its individuals indistinguishable, but since I knew Britney Spears was somewhere in the crowd, I’ll label it as Britney. Then you can give it your vote of approval, too.
*whacks you all with Cluex4*
whatever the scientifically politically correct classification is, it looks like the Eye of Sauron. THE END.
You accuse someone of being burned and then become frustrated when he responds with reasoning? Nice job.
I’m just saying you all are too serious. Don’t have a fit.
OMGWTFKFCBBQ!!!!1! Big brother IS watching!
*hides under covers*
i thought that too when i saw the news picture lol
Am i the only one who finds that we have a dust cloud out there that looks like Sauron’s Eye kinda scary.
Hurrah for Sauron!
I totally posted this first same thing the day they released this picture
Your lookalike pic is better than mine though.
LOL… you think we found it at last?
i think he’s just pissed his name is palsyboy and this pic gots more recognition than his “accurate” if not shittier pic
Uh-oh.
NERD
that’s not a planet! that’s a supernova remnant!
That is a dust ring that is surrounded by the star Fomalhaut in the constellation of Pisces Austrinus. It was discovered recently and there might be planets taht exist in that area or planet formation.
its exactly like the brain cell/universe thing, but COOLER!
The Lord of the Rings movies are the greatest movies ever.
Thats true ! But that planet is called Fomalhaut B
Get over yourself. This is a bit of fun, not the bloody institute of atronomy and astrology.
It’s a bit of stupidity, which sucks in all contexts…except FAIL Blog, of course.
And you don’t think spending vast acres of space ranting about it makes you look equally stupid?
