Uhhh .. the image on the left isn’t a planet. The planet is actually a tiny spot on that image, which is not even visible on this scaled version. So the image title “Newly discovered planet” is very, very misleading.

Ummmm….. no sorry. The one above is much better if only for the fact that it’s rotated so it mimics the shape, yours is at a weird angle so it no longer looks like the eye at all.
The problem is that if it’s rotated, it gets those black cut-off lines, just like this front-page image has. And “it no longer looks like the eye at all?” If your spatial abilities suck so badly that you can’t mentally rotate a two-dimensional object forty-five degrees, that’s your problem.

No, just epic stupidity that someone mislabeled a *dust disc* as a fucking *planet*. It wasn’t my idea, anyway; someone on Ars Technica noticed the similarity, and I told him that I’d make it into a look-alike. After checking around, it turns out that I was about the thousandth person to make it. If someone else who’d properly captioned the image had made it to the front page, that would’ve been just fine by me. The only “burn” I’m suffering is the same that other posters have: It’s improperly labeled. Note that a lot of look-alikes have captioned “Weird Al” Yankovic as “‘Weird Al’ Yankovic.” If people can’t bother to look up the actual concept or spelling of what they’re making, then they shouldn’t be doing it.
Get over yourself. This is a bit of fun, not the bloody institute of atronomy and astrology.
It’s a bit of stupidity, which sucks in all contexts…except FAIL Blog, of course.

That is a dust ring that is surrounded by the star Fomalhaut in the constellation of Pisces Austrinus. It was discovered recently and there might be planets taht exist in that area or planet formation.
