Fürst?
I cant believe u people cant understand different cultures like this… thats sad that our society today cant accept people who look or are different
I’m far more worried that someone thought Tom’s name was an acronym (for what, “Tow Otters’ Mania?”) than this is somehow bigoted. If you seek to be offended, you will inevitably succeed. Good job on your success.
wows~ WHAT???! Are you mental? Not one of these comments is putting down that poor lady for wearing neck rings. All cultures have strange customs that outsiders don’t fully understand. This is Totally LOOKS LIKE. No one is here to culture-bash.
Meanwhile, loopysunshine gets a total WIN for originality!!! Way to not just put another twist on the same old thing.
I’m not sure anyone is actually being intolerant here. I mean the fact someone found this similarity is really clever. It isn’t like they wrote “Tom totally looks like dumbass backwards terrorist neck rings woman who probably doesn’t even know freedom and had a female circumcision”.
LOL!!! I mean ouch. I mean, Oh isn’t that sad. yeah.
what are you talking about? this person was just saying that the person looked like tom because of the rings, not because people from different culture looked funny! you are an idiot.
Ah, yes, but now he is an idiot who can feel very proud of himself and what a goooooood person he is.
um… ‘female castration’ is a part of some cultures. That does not make it good.
You wrote the same insubstantial comment that so many others have except that you added an umlaut. Wow. You’re so clever. Please share your wisdom not only with me, but with the world.
Holy freaky cultural custom, Batman…
Ouch! Does not look comfortable!
…or healthy
i would not think so, but whatever floats there cultural boat
it’s actually perfectly healthy. they do it slow and it just stretches the muscles. look it up.
Actually, it isn’t healthy, because it could cause infection, weakened muscles, therefore the person could choke in her own tongue, and more.
Um. That’s like racist. Or something. I’m sure, somehow.
I don’t think it’s racist to point out the pain and distress caused by such customs. Recognizing the value of a culture does not mean automatically accepting everything that said culture considers normal. Look at it this way: If she were a European-looking woman, what would you think of her? You’d probably think she was a total freak. It’s like the anorexia/bulemia epidemic in Western culture. A whole lot of people convinced her she would be more beautiful if she did this to herself. That is creepy…and sad.
it’s not painful, nor does it decrease the strength of the neck. it is also voluntary. imo, it’s no more strange than high heels.
“it is also voluntary”
So, if you were the only one in your small village NOT to do it, you think the other villagers would be a-okay with that?
And if you wear high heels too often it can actually do permanent damage/hurt you not to wear them. So your analogy is accurate!
actually when National Geographic did an article about the culture this woman came from, they said that because of the forced separation of the vertebrae caused by those rings, if she were to ever remove them for any reason she would die either from asphyxiation or from the spinal cord being severed almost immediately. those rings eliminate the natural neck strength by robbing it of its natural support. In my book this is yet another one of those wacky and dangerous methods women use to attempt to make themselves more beautiful in a long progression of unhealthy methods
something i’ve learned from things like NatGeo and other sources about things in other cultures is that scientists are learning new things all the time, so don’t necessarily understand everything you read as the absolute truth!
agreed. but they ARE looked down upon is they don’t do it and men are more attracted to the women who have more rings. and it IS painful… when the rings are taken off to make them longer, the women have no neck support and it’s extremely painful for them..
I’ve seen this before. When a girl turns 13/14-ish and ‘comes-of-age’, she is given the first 2 rings, the top and the bottom. Then each year after that she is given one of the middle rings. It’s kind of like the boys in some African tribes that get a new facial piercing every year. It’s one of those weird cultural things. For the neck rings in particular, it’s a slow stretching, so it doesn’t hurt too much, they just can’t ever take the rings off.
Racism: n.
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
How is this racist? No one mentioned race. Except for you. Hmm…
Joke: n.
…Ah, screw it. Your’e the one with a dictionary. Look it up.
Between me and you:
I think everyone’s a little bit racist, sometimes,
doesn’t meanwe go around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
no one’s really color-blid.
Maybe it’s a fact we all should face:
everyone makes judgements – based on race.
Everyone’s a little bit racist – today.
Everyone’s a little bit racist – okay!
Ethnic jokes might be uncouth,
but you laugh because they’re based on truth.
Don’t take them as personal attacks.
Everyone enjoys them – so relax!
Yay Broadway!
Below is part of the Wiki page on this practice. It seems like a form of slow torture to me. In pictures I’ve seen of women/girls who are subjected to this I see only pain and misery in their eyes. I think it is akin to the barbaric custom of binding the feet of Chinese females. Thankfully, this is now a FORMER custom.
.
“Neck rings push the collarbone and ribs down and stretch the neck muscles several inches. The stretching of the muscles takes several years to occur. The neck stretching is mostly illusory; the weight of the rings twists the collar bone and eventually the upper ribs to create the illusion of an elongated neck. The vertebrae do not elongate. In advanced stages the forces can cause trauma, such as occlusion of venous flow or hematoma.
A person who has been wearing neck rings for many years may suffer difficulties with the neck muscles and pain from the weight of the rings[1]. The area beneath neck rings may become infected if left unwashed. To have neck rings removed individuals can go to a hospital and have them taken off. Afterward the patient must wait several months for their neck muscles to recover. In some cases, the muscles have become so weak that she can choke to death on her own tongue if not provided with support. The bone structure deformation recovers only minimally after ring removal.
Sometimes tourism is blamed for encouraging people to wear neck rings as attractions to earn money from tourists.”
This is not a chinese costum -_-;;
“Akin” means similar to. Cloudy was saying that the custom of wearing neck rings was similar to the Chinese custom of binding women’s feet.
Of course, this is completely different from the peer pressure to be as skinny and beautiful as possible that the West imposes on its women.
oh, absolutely!
(LOL)
totally
Wasn’t that the point of that gag in the cartoon?
u like like a hurtin
woooow thats a very long neck! but cant people just let their bodies be?!
Another example of how Politically Correct the golden age of animation was!
