OMFG! He just figured out the meaning of the universe!

*sigh* Yes, but it will now be replaced with something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Thanks. You could have at least waited until after the holidays.

Thank you. I was anticipating a Douglas Adams reference. :)

^_^ You’re quite welcome! In retrospect, though, I think I should have usernamed as Slartibartfast, for maximum effect.

    • Rachel says:

Idiotic post. It’s not a Universe. It’s not a galaxy. It’s an animal neuron.

  2. Nekkuma says:

This has a lot of metaphysical implications that I’m not sure I’d ever like to talk about.

  3. yep says:

like maybe all our brain cells are like…. tiny little universes man… and like every time we think man, we’re like…. making new starts man… like whoa man

  4. John says:

Maybe our Universe is just part of a brain cell from a larger being? That’s scarily cool…

  5. patrick says:

    i knew it!!!

  6. Shin says:

A can already see someone making up the theory that the universe might be a brain cell of a much greater being, or that all of our brain cells might be tiny universes. However, the atoms brain cells consist of are much, much closer to each other than the stars, galaxies or galaxy clusters in the universe, and there is also no significant similarity between atoms and galaxies etc., nor has anything that could be identified as a linear flow of information (corresponding to the action potentials in neurons), which is the purpose of brain cells, been observed in the universe. Myth BUSTED!

    • Mnkyball says:

ok, that hurt. But it is a illogical assumption to think that a braincell from a bigger being (probably evolved very differently then we did) had the same structure as our braincells. Or even consists out of the same materials and physics laws that we have come to know (probably not yet fully).

    • Defiant says:

What about the vast amount of space between nuclei and electrons? I somehow think that an argument based on “there’s too much space in between” doesn’t quite cut it.

    • name:required says:

      ……galaxies are quarks & string segments…..duh

      • Shin says:

If galaxies were quarks, the universe would not even be the size of a single protein. Also, in regard to their size, the galaxies are much further away from each other than atoms in a molecule, and there is also no force that binds them to each other except for gravity, which is however more similar to the van der Waals forces than to a strong attractive force such as the covalent or ionic bond.

        • muffinbottom says:

          What ’bout dark matter?

        • well.. isn’t size relative? I mean sure we have our own system of measurements, but wouldn’t a smaller being measure something relative to its own size in much the same way? I don’t much enjoy thinking about all of this, it kinda hurts my head… But why rule it out? Nothing’s really impossible in an infinite universe.

    • ellen says:

I guess you didn’t see Men In Black.
They figured this out years ago.

  7. Vear says:

mayhaps since neurons and universes are made of fundamentally the same things… (atoms, particles, quarks, strings… blah blah blah….) they coalesce in ways that appear to be similar… kinda like how hurricanes look oddly like spiral galaxies… just a thought…

  8. WannaSmile.com says:

    Wow. That’s pretty kewl akshully.

  9. Markitteh says:

There just may be some things beyond the ken of mortal man, Captain.

And 42 you all. (Don’t Panic!)

  10. Ian W. says:

Does that mean humanity is an aneurism?

  11. yeld says:

That’s like from that Simpsons’ coach gag, when homer evolves and then suddenly whole universe is in his head. Wow.

  12. walker says:

this is totally from the John Dies at the End sequel that was online

  13. slaggingham says:

    It’s the Mind of Bob.

  14. BC says:

This was a news story about 6 months ago. It isn’t clever- you just copied it.
    http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2006/08/14/science/20060815_SCILL_GRAPHIC.html

  15. MewMushroom says:

    That’s really cool….makes you think, doesn’t it?

  16. Markitteh says:

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Douglas Adams. the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. ibid.

  17. calilac says:

    hooray for fractals!
(if you don’t know how this relates to the pic, you’re not ready to know.)

  18. Kaptyn says:

Not trying to cause any undue panic here, but has anyone considered that a higher being may have created both, and just reused a functional pattern? The same types of things can be seen in similar bone structures (if not proportions and sizes) in whale fins, bat wings, human arms, and other animal arm-like appendages… If there is a higher being which created te universe and everything in it, it stands to reason that He/She/It would want to re-use a pattern which He/She/It found appealing/practical.

In any case, that’s just my thoughts on the matter. Take them as you will.

  19. Chris says:

There must be some connection between

  20. muffinbottom says:

    Dude…. I’m, like at one with stuff….

  21. Kinoko says:

Too bad thats not a picture of “the universe”

We don’t have any sort of device capable of capturing such an image.

  22. schnydens says:

    i got one word:
    DEEP!

    …and maybe WOW…

  23. w2bh says:

    Nahhhhhh,,, A methaphysical totallylookslike *barfs*

  24. James says:

Ahhhhh, So THAT picture explains why the Law of Attraction exists.

    LOL Sorry ;p

    <—– Totally NLP obsessive

    • moonbaby says:

NO. The Law of Attraction exists because God is a friendly, loving being who allows us to invite things into our life experiences and as long as we follow His directions (ie: Crack the Book, repent until we are perfect, and Always be kinder than necessary), He is more than willing to give us all the joy we could ever want. Gratitude is the Key. Not dendrites.

      =D

  25. gilda8607 says:

This reminds me of a Pagan saying, “As above, so below.” Anyway, that was the first thing I thought when I saw this TLL.

  26. catman says:

    Coincidence? I think not!

  27. Enkhtamir says:

    Welcome

  28. munty13 says:

Didn’t The Simpson’s do a sketch based on this, zooming in on Homer’s bonse?

  29. ORLY says:

Well we are all made up of stuff from old stars that have died and exploded and then reformed our galaxy/solar system/planet. So I guess it does make sense XD

  30. heidi s. says:

if our neurons are universes and our universe is the neuron of a greater being, would we ever come to know the effect of this? there are cultures of bacteria existing inside of us, as there are human cultures. the bacteria in our digestive tract goes about its business, unchanged by the reality of their form of life. they do what they need to do to make it work. our human culture gives great significance to its own existence, specifically the dynamic relationship of subcultures. we understand our human culture as a separate entity, serving a separate purpose, with a different destiny than that of other cultures.

this actually is intended to be more of an inquiry than an explanation. i do wonder, with these identifiably similar functions and structures that occur on different scales, whether there it is feasible to conjure a potentially observable result of overlapping or clashing or a realization of something that is somehow altogether just one big giant super-thing that magically presents itself as a bajillion different things all at once… i’m going off into the deep end. i figure we’re all here looking at this cute little picture for some reason or another.

  31. morgan says:

    the meaning of life…..

  32. kp says:

I think this has already been asked, but how exactly do we know this is an accurate representation of the universe? Is there a link explaining?

    • Dana says:

This is probably just one universe that they’ve found. I doubt it’s a picture of our universe, simply of one they’ve found using crazy telescopes and whatchamadoogles. Wandering around NASA as an aimless lost child has it’s perks, you get to see a lot. No idea what most of the stuff does, or how it works, but still. They’ve got some crazy whatchamadoogles.

  33. jj says:

how the hell did they get a pic of the universe?

  34. gdg says:

    best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Scipio says:

    My mind is officially blown.

  36. Rachel says:

Worst post ever. It’s not a universe. It’s not even a galaxy. You idiots that believe this and see some metaphysical revelation are dolts.

  37. conn says:

how do i get my messages here

  38. nick says:

My mind is blown too and yes I totally get the implication that a human brain cell potentially resembles a microscopic part of a microscopic cell of an unfathomably enormous organism that is our universe. And I love that people read way too far into it. Though the point being made can be neither proven nor dis-proven, it sparks wondrous thought, intrigue and imagination.

However, I would guess that this is an artistic representation by a scientist of what the universe might look like. It’s not a real photograph. Great ‘totally-looks-like’ though.

    • zhenor says:

well, astrophysicists used some kind of super computer or just a computer to simulate what the universe looks like. So it is probably just a prediction of what part of the universe looks like to really everyone cool down about it.

  39. stevie w says:

Oh wow, this is like “Horton Hears a Who” ….. but it’s in your head !!! Whoaahhh !!!!!

    • maddi says:

OMFG! we’re like little whos. but are we in the cat’s head? or horton’s? or God’s?
      trippy mayne…
damn, i’m gonna think about this all night..

  40. emanuel says:

I think this is an fx from the team which also made the effects in guillermo del toro’s “el laberinto del fauno” movie. they use chemicals looked trough the microscope to make visuals like this universe.

  41. GuitarDude77 says:

the whole universe is gods brain!!

  42. Pia says:

Right, so this doesn’t prove that the universe is the brain cell of some greater being. But it does support an already well-known theory about patterns being repeated in all of nature’s designs. Pretty interesting.

…And no, I don’t believe in any god just to have that said. <_<

  43. Flo Ridah says:

DUDE! Maybe the Universe is the brain of another man. And we as well have galaxies in our mind. =))))))))))) /sarcasm

  44. Czathero says:

They are similar. Like the fact that we use ten percent of our brains and the other fact that we have only seen part of the universe.

  45. mousetrap says:

does this mean that we are in a brain cell of a greater being… this could be linked to god… except he would just be a guy with a amazing fantasy life… what about the braincells we have… this could be epic… but untill then, it’s NAKED TIME

  46. MALKA says:

    CREEEEPY!!!

  47. Signe Clemente says:

    Hello, Mr. Mackle SIR!

A visual comparison named “A Brain Cell Totally Looks Like The Universe.” From a little place called totallylookslike.com.
Completely random, and yet… completely related to World Religions.
(an explanation of the images’ sources=http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2006/08/14/science/20060815_SCILL_GRAPHIC.html)
Kindling to the intelligent design fire? Maybe.

It must seem random; thanks for the time if you took some to check it out. o:

    Signe

  48. Cmas says:

If that don’t blow your mind ;-D

  49. Silvien says:

No, it’s a brain cell of a mouse. And as we all know, they are the most intelligent species on the planet Earth. Which might, or might not, explain something…

  50. Etienne Maheu says:

We all have billions of universe in our heads :D

  51. N00bs says:

Alright, n00bs. The photo on the left is a brain cell. The photo on the right is not “the universe.” The photo on the right is the predicted pattern of distribution of Dark Matter ‘in’ the Universe.

So stop with these silly comments about galaxies and stars.

    -sigh-

    Onward with the Mandelbrot discussion.

  52. Mikey says:

WAY TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE, EX-LAX.

  53. Name Required says:

Actually I find this kinda ”cute”.

The universe the as what’s in your mind.
    So your mind’s the universe.

    Ok ok I’m out

  54. Name Required says:

Actually I find this kinda ”cute”.

The universe is the same as what’s in your mind.
    So your mind’s the universe.

    Ok, ok I’m out

  55. Ranee says:

    mind=blown
    thats all.
