Orc General Gothmog from Lord of the Rings Totally Looks Like Sloth from the Goonies
Submitted by jozanovic
I wonder if Sloth was the inspiration for Peter Jackson?
Actually, no.
They were told to create “something ugly” and the sculptor literally threw hunks of clay at the head sculpt. Peter came in, looked at it, and said “That works.”
That’s the nutshell version of how Gothmog came about.
He’s played by the same actor, by the way, who plays the Morgul Lord. (Same one who played Lurtz in the first film.) So he’s literally talking to himself in the scene were the WitchKing of Angmar is telling his general what he wants him to do.
Actually, no again. Gothmog and Sloth are BOTH a total ripoff of Quasimodo in the 1939 classic “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Google Image search “Charles Laughton Hunchback” and you’ll see.
They gave that guy a name? …Why?
It was probably in the books (never read them).
I’m gonna go full trivia-nerd on this one and say that Gothmog in the books is one of the Balrogs (fire demons) mentioned in The Silmarillion (Tokien’s book of background mythology for the Hobbit and LOTR books) the orc general wasn’t really in the books, but when they went to name this new character, Jackson and Co. named him Gothmog as a little nod to people who have managed to read The Silmarillion
NEEERRRDDD!!!
Geeks are win! And if you contradict me, I’ll set the Wargs on you!
Are they housebroken?
U iz full of teh win and teh awesumness, TC!
Danke mein CheezFreunde…Danke. and the same holds true for you
i think this has already been posted
Hasn’t this one been done before?
Sloth was compared to the Toxic Avenger a while back.
somehow, all mutants with asymetric eyes look the same to me.
they kinda do, now you’ve said so. Frikkin weird
That’s what I was about to say.
“Heeeeeeyyy yooouuu ooooooorrrccc’s”
I loved that part.
Ha ! ..omg.. totally !
Great! Thanks for the nightmare I will be having tonight…..
I must confess that when I first saw the movie when it came out, and I saw this character, this comparison was exactly what came to mind.
Nice – so much better than all “Contemporary Celebrity A looks like Contemporary Celebrity B” contributions we’ve been getting.
The Orc guy has better teeth.
But Sloth has the better complexion !
And Peter Jackson’s retarded orc looks like the Toxic Avenger — full circle. (And Toxie was here first, btw!)
I completely agree with this one.
The first time I saw Return of the King, as soon as this character came one screen, I turned to my friend and said ‘ HEY YOU GUYS!’.
My husband and I did the exact same thing…how funny….
its called repurposing and recycling
Several people actually giggled when General Gothmog first appeared on the screen during the midnight showing of this film. My friends weren’t really receptive to my theory that he looked like Sloth, it’s good to know now I’m not alone!
I love the movie but that orc took away from the movie because all I could see was Sloth from Goonies. Gothmog want a BabyRuth bar?

The Lord of the Rings movies are the greatest movies ever.
i agree, but actually, the gothmog mask IS the sloth mask. they just messed around with it
I thought this when I first saw the film.
They both also look like the Toxic Avenger, aka “Toxie.”
You are a real Goonie, Goonie, goonie…
