Ok.. this one is stupid… what the heck do you think they MADE his visor from?

    • XD says:

And who the heck hasn’t put one of those banana clips over their eyes in order to look like Jordy.

I know I sure did XD

    • Tristessa says:

it looks like one because it IS one. Watch Star Trek: The Making of…………der!

      • Mystere says:

DUDE! He totally did a behind the scenes on a Reading Rainbow episode when I was little! The great thing was that my mom was wearing one at the time… ^.^

    • drivernjax says:

      Exactly.

    • heather says:

No kidding, i mean seriously, it was a banana clip people, that would be why it looks like one, to be really precise, it was a goody brand double tooth banana clip that came out in 1982, and was dipped in metallic paint. Knowing this may make me a nerd, but not realizing it, makes the rest of you stupid!

      • sinna says:

actually,, i hate star trek,, i never even watched it but once,, and i know that!! now how does that make me look?? actually,, how does that make the one who posted this look??

    • Chaz says:

Stoopid with 2 “O’s”, actually. Any Star Trek Fan Knows that the Banana Clip is Exactly what they made Jordy’s Eye Visor from. This has been Common Knowledge ever since the First Star Trek t.n.G. Aired. Lame, Lame, Lame. Warp Nine Lame.

      • PJ says:

Ok – even I know that – so I’m not sure what it makes anyone else, but I don’t want to say anything bad about people… play nice ok??
Seriously – they talked about that on a Star Trek special – how Gene’s wife Majel had one in her hair and it gave them the idea… blah blah blah.
BUT you all are very smart and know that…

  2. PeachyKat says:

Memorieeees…like the corners of my mind…

I used a cloth-covered cardboard headband. ST: NG totes rocked; I was born JUST IN TIME to remember its run…! Data was my fave character. A human computer? A computer human? Rawr!

  3. Geordi La Forge says:

    Name spelling FAIL

  4. lilmoon says:

heh- its spelled Geordi LaForge. I’m a geek :D

and yeah- that’s where they got it from lol- not bad for the 80s right? lol

  5. job says:

Jordy? JORDY? Treason against the Federation, I say!

  6. Skimp da dimp says:

Movie Prop – Totally Looks Like – Object it was made from

  7. Z says:

That’s because that IS what IS.

It’s like saying a cat looks like a cat. NO DUH!

  8. whatever says:

I believe Geordi’s visor is actually an air filter.

  9. ALison says:

Always thought it was an air filter.

    • jjmblue7 says:

It always rminded me of the wheezing frisbee from that one spisode of Doug (the Nickelodeon version, not the Disney crap). I think it was called the Whizzer…

  10. mearrin69 says:

Yeah. Pretty sure it’s an air filter – only looks like a hair clip from a distance. Prop component recognition fail.
    M

    • dina says:

This will make me sound like a total nerd, but nope. Interviews with the production staff have revealed that it was, in fact, inspired by a banana clip.

      • mearrin69 says:

Yes. “Inspired by”…but made from? I don’t know what the thing was made from…but I’m pretty sure it’s not one of those hair clips.
        M

        • trek jew says:

If you watch the first season of STTNG you will see the top tines and the bottom tines alternate back and forth LIKE A BANANA clip if it was designed after an air/oil filter I would not purchase the car, for it left way too many gaps to allow contaminents in. That is engineering 101!!! Duh!!

  11. Geeky Girl says:

    TBTLer?

  12. francie says:

It’s not an air filter. It’s a hair clip. It says so in the special features.

  13. PeppaMama says:

    Nostalgia WIN! For both parts!

  14. Hello, computer says:

Actually, in an interview with Gene Roddenberry himself, he says that’s where he got the idea from, he saw one in his wife’s hair. So yes, it’s a banana clip.

  15. PeachyKat says:

    Also….REEEEAADING RAAIIINBOWWWW…. ;)

  16. mandydax says:

I swear I should just start cutting and pasting these to Failblog, ffs. *growl*

  17. Big Deezy says:

This should definitely go to FailBlog, I’m pretty sure his name is Geordi LaForge and I’m positive that his visor was made from a banana clip… sheesh!

  18. I always thought that. But you know, it sure did help him see better.

Why couldn’t they just make them look like glasses?

    • Lakshmi says:

Because then it wouldn’t have been “the future”. Everyone knows that nothing is the same in “the future”. yeesh

    • I's I ninja says:

      BECAUSE GLASSES ARE DORKY

I’ve had glasses for ever and i’ve always wanted to have a VISOR like Geordi.

  19. ascatal says:

Geordi was not a recurring charater he was a regular

  20. Abeotch says:

Well….that was as fresh and new a notion as the headline that Clay Aiken is gay.

  21. consilioetanimis says:

i think it looks like the grill on an air con

  22. Janeway says:

I’ve been saying this for years!!! LOL

  23. Pirate77 says:

    Duh… it is a visor.

  24. Pirate77 says:

I mean banana clip. Too much workie.

  25. mearrin69 says:

    http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/features/bst/article/3046.html
    http://www.startrek.com/startrek/videoview?id=3002

It was inspired by a banana clip. It is MADE of solid-cast aluminum with brass rods making up the view area. It is NOT made from a frakkin’ banana clip – and if you had ever seen one of them up close and maybe paid attention to Geordi’s visor you would know that.

    M out.

    • heather says:

actually, i worked in the prop room for 4 years, and yes they were banana clips, a total of 650 on the series used, and 231 on the films, they tended to melt a lot, and they continued using the banana clip, because the original metal “prototype” visor was too heavy for lavarr to wear for extended periods of time.

      • amgreen says:

        HA! Burn!

It’s amazing the simple stuff they used for props. I love TNG special features.

      • mearrin69 says:

Convincing Internet impersonation of an important figure in Star Trek prop-making history fail. They melted a lot? Give me an f’ing break. LOL.

I bet it worked on some people though: Yes, yes. Let’s trust “Heather” over the video from StarTrek.com. She’s much more credible.

LOL. And people wonder why civilization is going to hell in a handbasket.
        M

    • PixieMcWixie says:

Wellllll, the community is “totally looks like” not, er, “is totally made from”. So for me there is still some failure. Also, the name issue.

  26. Jade says:

Ugh, horrible. They totally misspelled Geordi.. That made my nerd gland hurt..

  27. Leep says:

Silly, silly people. Believe the first poster. The prop was based on a banana clip, if you look at an actual banana clip it’s too short and not shaped properly to go around anyone’s face.

Whether or not it was metal is debatable but they can make anything look like metal and fashion anything they want out of plastic so they didn’t have to use *actual* banana clips. Duh. I visited the Trek set a few times and had several friends that worked there….good times.

  28. D.R. says:

I always thought it was part of a car filter…

  29. ATL !!! says:

I thought his name was spelled Geordie.

  30. Failerella says:

Next up on “Totally Looks Like” – computers look like computers! And TVs look like TVs!

  31. Heather Mac says:

    Um, it’s “Geordi La Forge.”

  32. Jeff Cross says:

Geordi’s VISOR *IS* a banana hair clip! All the original concept drawings for the thing looked too much like Oakley wraparound sunglasses.

  33. Bill Johnson says:

    No, no no. People people…
It looks like half a car air/oil filter!

  34. Cheese says:

Either way, I think the idea was quite a futuristic fail.

  35. MYNAMEISKHAN says:

    It’s “Geordi”…

  36. rat says:

this is made of fail… >.<
    *fills with Trekkie rage*

    1. It’s spelled GEORDI
    2. He was a main character

*protects TNG boys, gives Data and Geordi cookies*

  37. sandyaj says:

I remember an episode of Reading Rainbow where he actually tells us it really was a hair clip in the first season, (it was the episode where reading rainbow was on the enterprise)

  38. Gina says:

I guess you’re too young to know that that’s where they got the idea for the visor. Everyone was wearing these clips when the Geordi character was created. Good observation, just 23 years behind the times.

  39. Audrey says:

You just pissed of a ton of trekies! It’s Geordi, he was a MAIN character and Gene got the idea from a banana clip in his wife’s hair!

  40. Brandi says:

It IS what he wore Gene admitted it, LeVar admitted it Gene said that he spent a whole lot of money doing research for Geordi’s VISOR and in the end it was a cheap $4 clip from his wife I know I own the first season on DVD where it says that.

  41. Cosman246 says:

    It’s Geordi, not “Jordy”

  42. Mike Harbourt says:

it’s not a banana clip and anyone who tryes to confirm that it is , is stupid. It is made from an air filter from a car , cut in half. I have read this many places , also I’ve been a mechanic for years and it’s obvious.

  43. Panda says:

anyone who calls themselves a star trek fan and spells his name “jordy” is a p’tahk. (it’s a klingon word that basically means you’re a complete idiot. i’m a huge trekkie and PROUD OF IT!)
