There’s “looks like”, and then there’s “plagiarized and someone should sue”.
I agree! Almost everything is identical!
I think it IS exactly alike one just doesn’t have color and it looks like it got cropped so the angle looks different
maybe they got permission from the owner of the picture because I’m sure someone would see that and so oh that is exactly the same as this.
You’re probably right, Haley. Someone’s publisher wasn’t very creative.
Most likely the cover designers just purchased the same stock photo.
My sentiments exactly.
You know, copying isn’t always done out of laziness or malice but it may very well be a means of homage towards someone, especially when it’s that exact in details.
Not plagiarized. Both publishers shop at the same stock photo provider. Neither could afford exclusive rights.
Yeah, I was just going to say it’s most likely stock footage.
There’s no plagiarism. Both publishers simply bought the same clipart image. Sometimes you can see the same photo on five or six different books, tweaked slightly.
This is immensely common in book publishing simply because of the cost of producing an original cover. A publisher can buy a royalty-free image for $10 and have their design department add titles and tweak for another $100. Compare that to $500 or more for a photo or $1,500 or more for a drawing.
PLEASE. As somebody who frequently does book covers, it is not that expensive. Yes, stock photos are cheaper – but you’re quoting Michael Whelan or somebody famous like that. You can get a solid photo or drawing from a no-name for next to nothing. Under $50 by a long shot.
no good artist will sell you a photo or art for under $50. my starting price as a “no name” as you so disrespectfully call us, was $200 while STILL an Illustration student at School Of Visual Arts.
if you are “doing” book covers as in illustrating them you are getting ripped off and getting paid less then the price to use Good stock Photos. if you mean “doing” as in getting artists, you are not getting anyone with true talent or solid training, because they would charge more otherwise.
And yet I am an artist also but am happy to let my work be shown cheap as needed in order for it to be seen… especially if I believe in the work the other person is doing…
PEOPLE! The points you are making about art are FUTILE.
Can’t you see that @loanaea has a DEGREE! From a SCHOOL! of ART! That’s the best trump card money can buy.
It doesn’t matter if it’s cheap or no. They still used the same stock image. It’s not plagiarism.
Yeah! I will definately sell my original art for less than $1500!!!!!
Sounds more like both used an image bank and picked the exactly same photo.
it’s the same freaking picture! Even the wall and the lights are the same!
Traced, I lol at these sometimes.
and who are you “ringo” to say that they didnt get permission
I thought it was gonna be about Sachiel from Evangelion
.
me too…
Yeah, so did I… I was wondering what the heck they could get Sachiel to look like. XD
For the record, Secondhand Serenade’s CD came out prior to Alice Hoffman’s release of her book.
Secondhand Serenade – A Twist in My Story (Released: Feb 19, 2008)
Alice Hoffman – The Third Angel (Released: April 8, 2008)
Apparently Alice is a fan.
Well it’s good to see that on the poster get the pictures in the right order =)
for the record the fact that they came out within months of each other is proof that neither one of them knew about the other using the photo before it was put out, cover art is decided and tweaked well before the release in both cases
You know, it IS possible that it’s a third party pic. If someone else designs or takes a photo/drawing/etc, it is possible for them to resell it to others. If that’s the case, then no one gets sued…they just use the same photo. It works like that for freelance photographers.
It’s funny how many people forget stock photos. So many companies out there that have the same woman on the phone…
you mean that semi-asian looking woman? like in a call center?
Douchebags… This doesn’t totally look like, IT’S THE SAME GOD DAMN PICTURE!
Woah! Someone forgot their meds this morning!
you got that right!
coffee? Tea? Xanax?
More than likely both parties are douchebags for pulling a stock picture from a universal gallery somewhere instead of taking 5 minutes and a cvs disposable camera.
A stock photo costs less than the camera would cost. They start at $2.
Then you figure in the price of the costume, the sofa, the model’s fee…are you in Grade Nine or are you one of these arrogant college brats who thinks he knows it all?
He’s the douche we all hate from Fail Blog.
Stock pic
I was thinking the same thing.
So what, they used the same StockPhoto….
But the lights are higher on the CD cover.
And just because there’s a couple months between the two doesn’t mean there was any copying going on – a release date doesn’t mean that’s when they slapped a cover on it and shipped. It was designed, packaged and shipped and then held for the release date.
One of these days I’m gonna break down and TTL the Emperor from Star Wars w/CSM from X-Files…
They are both photoshopped versions of the same picture. The markings on the wall in the Alice Hoffman version are also lower. The lights weren’t lowered for that picture…they just edited the original photo.
Considering both works came out around the same time, I’m sure the artist put the picture on the market and had two (or more) buyers.
Technically not a “Totally Looks Like”, but still funny to point out.
Wow, this look alike is REALLY good. Great job!
Yes, the release dates were different. And the pictures are obviously identical, except of course for the colors. Who’s to say that Alice claimed the picture first and then published it later? I’m not playing favorites, I actually kinda go for Secondhand Serenade.
I bet it’s a stock photo. If you search for “A twist in my story the third angel” on google, there’s THIS and a deleted Yahoo question. Apparently it’s not that big of a deal or action would have been taken. Or there would be more results on google.
OH MY GAWD! Another Totally Looks Like in which “this thing” looks exactly like “this other thing” which just happens to be the aforementioned first thing only slightly altered… how original…
It doens’t matter. The picture is ugly on both of them.
equal
That’s so scary. I was listening to “Goodbye” by them as I went to this page. o__o
they’re both the SAME picture, if anyone here crosses their eyes (merging the pic) it’ll give a 3d effect, a fine example
It’s the same damn picture.
secondhand serenade did actually choose this cover from the book by alice hoffman
Wow, people, chill. I actually recognize this picture–you can see it at GettyImages, which is a stock site, in the photography of Kamil Vojnar. Well, he was on GettyImages, anyway; maybe he isn’t now, I don’t know, but at any rate this was a stock photo. Which is kind of too bad, because it’s beautiful art in its own right.
same pic, second hand’s is only in black and white. looked up the dates and the album came out Feb 2008 and the book just now came out on march 3rd 2009.
Welcome to 26 posts ago.
This is yet another example of looks like being retarded and putting something on the main page that is obviously a recycling of the same image. Seriously, folks, if you can’t tell that that’s the same exact image only photoshopped to be black and white and the string of Christmas lights was photoshopped to be higher in reference to the sofa. It’s the SAME exact person on the couch. Same hair. Same wings. Same everything. Seriously folks, an image being reused is not a case of “looks like” because it’s the SAME effing thing. ugh.
Well, it IS second hand….
Please forward this one to totallyis.com
HA BURN!
why is everyone giving this crap because this is a REAL lookalike as far as im concerned
I come to this web site to read the comment fights!! The TLL’s are just an added bonus. =o)
BTW if you are going to comment on how the ‘photo is a stock photo’ or ‘oh its the same pic’ or ‘oh this came out before that’ and yada yada…. READ THE FRIKKIN POSTS before you do cause someone already said it… I guarantee ya. That is all.
UGH…. TLLs, no apostrophe needed. Sorry, sorry…
“second hand” indeed
have any of you read the book!! look up some lyrics to 2nd hand. and the cliff notes of the book .. hell look it up online … it is not a look alike .. they used that picture because of their type of music in relation to the book!!! … not look alike or plagarism
idiots .. pure idiots ..
Yes yes yes stockphoto… hmmm I thought it might even be a painting or something, I’m going to look at the Met or something…
I am a book cover designer. Even rights managed images can be used on the same book cover, although technically, the second designer should be made aware of it if the vendor keeps accurate usage records. Their EULAs guarantee nothing, though. It happens.
There are entire blogs dedicated to spotting book covers that use the same images.
Also, when you’re dealing with larger publishing houses, they’re the ones who license the image, not the designer. Although, the designer will probably be the one tracking it down, but price isn’t the only issue. Big houses are willing to pay for the right image.
Quite often they have preferred vendors they license from (Getty or Corbis are most popular).
Smaller players use the micro-stock agencies such as Bigstockphoto.com and istockphoto.com (although big players will use them, too). You’ll see images from those places used over and over and over on books.
That image screams book cover. I would have grabbed it in a second.
It’s PROBABLY a tribute. Maybe they liked they image and nicked it. Still, no excuse. Shame, Secondhand!
It’s a stock photo.
People use them all the time.
FAil stop posting the same thing. we know its thw same photo, we also know its a stock image. i know that someone already said this. but the fact that noone listened is funny
thats wher they got the picture. if u look at it the secondhand seranade looks just like the third angel cover just in black and white with a diferent name. i mean seriously they thought they could pull it off by just making those small changes but its unmistakeable i mean it even has the same chai, backround and even the lights are there
i used this pic in my website before. i got it from gettyimages.
Most likly someone in the band ” Second hand serenade” read that book and liked it, which in turn made them want to use it as a cover to one of their CD’s. Not a ’stock photo’ you jackasses.
It is just interesting to see the same photo. It is like…hmmm…entertainment! Slightly more entertaining than all the controversy it caused on the blogs following, but not quite as entertaining as the comparitive pictures that aren’t the same exact picture….like Lindsey Lohan and Gollem…classic!
f….a…i….l
Tim’s got it right, it’s a stock photo that was purchased. An easier, more affordable way to go, but risk is that it has been used by others.
0_0 that is exact!wow!
See this is why people shouldn’t use stock images….XP
