Why does it say “Swiss Air Force” in English? Authenticity fail

  5. bdwilcox says:

    That’s just batty!

  6. bencott says:

does switzerland even have an air force?

  7. raptorkeeper says:

In this sign you will conquer?

Is that an appropriate motto for an air force?

  8. ASHLEIGH says:

Fail….. this is not their logo, I agree. That’s disappointing b/c I liked this site, but now how many of these aren’t even really the right pictures….. saddness :(

  9. Hasi says:

It’s the sign of the “Rekrutenschule”(military training school?) of the Swiss Air Force.

  10. philip says:

FAIL! This is the logo of the swiss air force:

  11. So the American AF boys fly on speed, and the Swiss AF boys on Cuba Libres… HEAVEN HELP US!! @_@

  12. zdub says:

Integration-of-alcohol-in-a-military-branch win. Switzerland needs drunk pilots.

  13. Rachel of Cyberia says:

Considering that Bacardi is one of- if not THE- biggest corporations in the world, I’d think they’re lawyers would have owned Switzerland by now for that trademark infringement.

    • Mao says:

LOL BACARDI LARGEST COMPANY IN THE WORLD

      Dumb.

    • hatesdumbpeople says:

ummmm just disreguarding all the other problems with your argument…. i think switzerland was around before bacardi, so it would be switzerland that would own barcardi…….

  14. blake419 says:

    logo lookalikes just aren’t funny.

  15. ajaa says:

Think again Rachel. You don’t have a very good perspective of the world if you think that Bacardi is the biggest company in the world.

It sure is a quite big company in the rum and alcohol business, but not much more then that.

  16. Jayzee54 says:

Bacardi revenues are about $5 to $6 billion US dollars per year.

A VERY SMALL company when compared to Wal-Mart ($300 billion /year) or AT&T ($100 billion / year), Microsoft ($51 billion / year) or even little old Apple ($24 billion per year)
    :-) )

  17. Lark says:

Switzerland is a neutral country, and therefore shouldn’t need an air force. >.>

    • Kapes says:

Umm, Switzerland has the largest standing army of any nation. Just because they are neutral doesn’t mean they aren’t prepared. Military service is mandatory for all 18 year old boys.

      • Rikiar says:

Actually China has the largest standing army of any nation. Thanks for playing.

        • jl5691426 says:

True, but Switzerland does have a formidable military; it’s essential to maintaining neutrality.

          • maxxarn says:

Really? Us swedes have cut down on our defence ALOT, and now it’s hard to get into the military service. About 20-30 years ago everyone had to do it. But since Sweden in the country who has gone the longest without participating in a war they figured we might as well cut it down.

            • OPIE says:

About 15 years ago, I felt them way about the U.S. A few little air raids now and then to keep the “trouble makers” in line wasn’t worth keeping a large military on the payroll. Now we are spread too thin looking for weapons in Iraq and fighting the war on terror and now trying to stop pirates. You just never know when conditions will change and you need to be prepaired. It’s truly sad…

            • hatesdumbpeople says:

a lot is two words, if you want people to take you seriously, learn to spell

              • LadyAlathia says:

hatesdumbpeople – I am willing to bet his English is a hell of a lot better than your German/French/Italian/whichever the hell he speaks as his first language.

                • YankinPaddyLand says:

LadyA – you got that right huh. my guess is that the Swiss speak swiss although in my travels in europe many many people speak english … often better then us yanks. I’m more shocked at Opie still looking for WMDs. One would think if the combined US military plus the tommies and a few paddys, and the canadians and aussies, and even a few italians and everyone else were invading … that would be the time to use any WMD you had. What are they waiting on? The tibetians getting pissed? love yer “name” hun very greekish

                  • De* says:

Look, once and for all: there’s 4 national languages in Switzerland: German (mostly a dialect in many different forms), French, Italian and a forgotten language called Romansh (spoken by 0.5%).

                  • Jourupe says:

Not to mention that there is no language called “swiss”, maxxarn is actually talking about sweden… wich isn’t the same as switzerland….
In sweden we speak swedish and starts to learn english in schools at age 10.

                • De* says:

Yes, it’d be nice that people who can barely speak their own language and nothing else would abstain from commenting what’s evidently nothing more than a typo.

    • Wasdf says:

I’m from Switzerland ant I totaly agree.

      • Paddy says:

I’ve been thru Switerland and .. it is truely a beautiful magnificent place BUT i didnt see enough flat land for an airstrip. I dont know about any standing swiss army but I pissed off one of those guys in the vatican once … he was no fun at all and one big nasty scary man even in the di vinci suit.

    • De* says:

      That’s for protection, dude! :D

  18. so that’s a fake??? or whitch’s the original???

  19. rum bah bum bum says:

    Haven’t we seen this before?

    Recently?

  20. bob says:

I didnt know that the swiss had an airforce, but thats probably where the bacardi logo came from

    • herb says:

Others have mentioned that this is a fake.

The Bacardi logo came from back in the day when most of their workers were semi-literate. The Bacardi distillery had so many bats in it, it became a running joke, then a logo.

  21. Dregvant says:

http://www.emblem.ch/index5.php scroll down to the bottom and there u willl find it the swiss air force Rekrutenschule

  22. Sir Gallivant says:

OK, this isn’t the _logo_ of the Swiss Air Force, but a badge/insignia of one of the branches of the Swiss Air Force. It may be out of use by now, hence the problems with finding the badge on the website of the SAF.

Many branches of various military forces use different badges and logos, for instance, one Danish Air Force Squadron has a dolphin in its badge.

  23. Zephr says:

Pretty funny how quickly people start yelling “fake”.

“Oh, wikipedia says this isn’t the insignia of the entire Swiss Air Force, therefore somebody must have made this up, and it can’t be in any way related to the real Swiss Air Force.”

    • jj says:

look at the picture and tell us if think this is real… what does a bat has to do with switzerland? why is “swiss air force” in english? why does the site of the real swiss air force show a different logo? why is there a site with flight insignia that shows alot of swiss insignia, but this one is not there, not even something that looks like this? why can’t you find anything on the swiss air force site about this slogan?

conclusion: it is fake, and you can’t seem to grasp that

      • Ev says:

OR … Hasi and Dregvant pointed out what it actually is and that it is actually related to the Swiss Air Force.

Conclusion: it is real, and you can’t read.

      • Paul_C says:

quite a few badges here with “swiss air force” on

        http://www.air-shop.ch/eshop/index.php?cat=c4_Badges.html

      • Wgsjul says:

why a bat ? as you can see on the previously mentionned website, it was the logo of the Rekrutenschule (the military school you do when you start). So the bat is a good choice to represent a small but and not yet too threatning flying animal.
why swiss air force in english ? There are 3 national languages. In Switzerland, English is often chosen where you cannot write everything 3 times.
Why the official site has a different logo ? It is obviously an old logo that we’re talking about.
        etc…
It’s actually an old logo that can only be found on a website selling these pieces of history, but that doesn’t mean it is a fake. It is even surely not one.

      • Sir Gallivant says:

As stated by others, this wouldn’t be the only Swiss badge with English language, just as several other air forces, including the Danish, use English language on their badges.
A reason for the badge not showing up on current sites could be that it is an old badge, or a badge made for a special occasion. As for the bat, that is an animal indigenous to many countries, so no reason for the Swiss not to use a bat. Could signify something to do with night flying maybe?

  24. sanityinjection says:

I’m not sure that Bacardi would care about this use of the logo since the Swiss Air Force is not making money off it. In fact, I’d suspect that the Swiss Armed Forces would be more perturbed to learn of the similarity.

  25. Mangos says:

    Bacardi is Swiss?

    • Wgsjul says:

no, Bacardi was created in Cuba. And it is much older than the swiss air force. The guy that created the swiss logo probably used the bacardi one to make his job easier.

  26. ben waz here says:

LOL!!!! suddenly the swiss air force became a whole lot more awesome

  27. ICDK says:

A bat totally looks like a bat. Amazing.

  28. Mwahohoho says:

    Okay, that’s a weird coincidence…Is it?

  29. Perlchen says:

This badge is no official one. Obviously the men who attended the namely “Rekrutenschule” (an institution where swiss draftees get their basic training) invented this badge themselves; it seems to be a tradition in the Swiss army to get an impressing or funny badge that underlines the group identity. Why do I think so? Well, the website hosted under http://www.emblem.ch/index5.php belongs to a company that fabricates badges according to customer requests – many of them coming from Rekruten (draftees), as it seems. Some of them obviously used to drink a lot (no surprise, I think) and felt it was a funny idea to chose the Baccardi bat as a mascot for their airforce Rekrutenschule. That’s it – no more, no less.

  30. blasix says:

In Switzerland, every groups of soldiers have their own “insignia”, wich can be made by them self.

  31. FrANsUa says:

I DoNt cArE WhO ThE FuC@#! gOt iT FiRsT bAcArDi RoCkS!

  32. Petersky says:

    EP1C FA1LURE!
Switzerland DO NOT even have an army so whadda ya say ’bout the Air Forces? LOL’d my pants of ur stupidity.

  33. Freddie says:

I’m not surprised to see that the badge has a partially english text, despite being from the swiss air force. I’m from Sweden and I know that some of the RSwAF has english text/logos on their aircrafts. For example the Tp84’s (or C-130 Hercules, to the rest of the world) who regulary participate in international operations, has the text “Swedish Air Force” in big letters on the forward fuselage.

  34. Drwu says:

It says swiss air force because “Air Force” in swiss/german is “Luftwaffe” and they probably don’t want to be associated with the infamous German Nazi Luftwaffe

  35. zomgface says:

The Swiss had an Air Force?! :o

  36. Sean says:

I don’t care if it’s fake or not, that Air Force logo is sweet! I want to buy it and sew it to a shirt. Where do you buy those?

  37. MachNumber says:

Hi, I’m a military pilot myself. This is what we call a “friday patch”, i.e., an unofficial, somewhat amusing one. They exist in a lot of air forces, but since they haven’t been officially approved, you wouldn’t normally be able to find them on any official government homepage. Of course, you’re not really allowed to wear them, but depending on where you fly, they’re more or less tolerated unless it really goes out of hand.

  38. Xaq says:

Holy crap! While everyone’s so worked up that a Swiss emblem has ENGLISH words on it, the zombie lobby has cleverly snuck in some Latin. Believe it or not, Latin is not an official language of Switzerland (or Sweden, for the geographically-challenged). In fact, by all accounts, Latin is officially deceased. I read the obituary myself.

  39. SB says:

Swiss Air force was not founded until 1914 according to wikipedia. Bacardi has been around since 1862. (check any label)
