Swiss Air force was not founded until 1914 according to wikipedia. Bacardi has been around since 1862. (check any label)

Holy crap! While everyone’s so worked up that a Swiss emblem has ENGLISH words on it, the zombie lobby has cleverly snuck in some Latin. Believe it or not, Latin is not an official language of Switzerland (or Sweden, for the geographically-challenged). In fact, by all accounts, Latin is officially deceased. I read the obituary myself.

Hi, I’m a military pilot myself. This is what we call a “friday patch”, i.e., an unofficial, somewhat amusing one. They exist in a lot of air forces, but since they haven’t been officially approved, you wouldn’t normally be able to find them on any official government homepage. Of course, you’re not really allowed to wear them, but depending on where you fly, they’re more or less tolerated unless it really goes out of hand.

It says swiss air force because “Air Force” in swiss/german is “Luftwaffe” and they probably don’t want to be associated with the infamous German Nazi Luftwaffe

I’m not surprised to see that the badge has a partially english text, despite being from the swiss air force. I’m from Sweden and I know that some of the RSwAF has english text/logos on their aircrafts. For example the Tp84’s (or C-130 Hercules, to the rest of the world) who regulary participate in international operations, has the text “Swedish Air Force” in big letters on the forward fuselage.

LadyA – you got that right huh. my guess is that the Swiss speak swiss although in my travels in europe many many people speak english … often better then us yanks. I’m more shocked at Opie still looking for WMDs. I’ve been thru Switerland and .. it is truely a beautiful magnificent place BUT i didnt see enough flat land for an airstrip. I dont know about any standing swiss army but I pissed off one of those guys in the vatican once … he was no fun at all and one big nasty scary man even in the di vinci suit.

This badge is no official one. Obviously the men who attended the namely “Rekrutenschule” (an institution where swiss draftees get their basic training) invented this badge themselves; it seems to be a tradition in the Swiss army to get an impressing or funny badge that underlines the group identity. Why do I think so? Well, the website hosted under http://www.emblem.ch/index5.php belongs to a company that fabricates badges according to customer requests – many of them coming from Rekruten (draftees), as it seems. Some of them obviously used to drink a lot (no surprise, I think) and felt it was a funny idea to chose the Baccardi bat as a mascot for their airforce Rekrutenschule. That’s it – no more, no less.

As stated by others, this wouldn’t be the only Swiss badge with English language, just as several other air forces, including the Danish, use English language on their badges.
A reason for the badge not showing up on current sites could be that it is an old badge, or a badge made for a special occasion. As for the bat, that is an animal indigenous to many countries, so no reason for the Swiss not to use a bat. Could signify something to do with night flying maybe?

why a bat ? as you can see on the previously mentionned website, it was the logo of the Rekrutenschule (the military school you do when you start). So the bat is a good choice to represent a small but and not yet too threatning flying animal.
why swiss air force in english ? There are 3 national languages. In Switzerland, English is often chosen where you cannot write everything 3 times.
Why the official site has a different logo ? It is obviously an old logo that we’re talking about.

It’s actually an old logo that can only be found on a website selling these pieces of history, but that doesn’t mean it is a fake. It is even surely not one.

I’m not sure that Bacardi would care about this use of the logo since the Swiss Air Force is not making money off it. In fact, I’d suspect that the Swiss Armed Forces would be more perturbed to learn of the similarity.

About 15 years ago, I felt them way about the U.S. A few little air raids now and then to keep the “trouble makers” in line wasn’t worth keeping a large military on the payroll. Now we are spread too thin looking for weapons in Iraq and fighting the war on terror and now trying to stop pirates. You just never know when conditions will change and you need to be prepaired. It’s truly sad…

look at the picture and tell us if think this is real… what does a bat has to do with switzerland? why is “swiss air force” in english? why does the site of the real swiss air force show a different logo? why is there a site with flight insignia that shows alot of swiss insignia, but this one is not there, not even something that looks like this? why can’t you find anything on the swiss air force site about this slogan?

Really? Us swedes have cut down on our defence ALOT, and now it’s hard to get into the military service. About 20-30 years ago everyone had to do it. But since Sweden in the country who has gone the longest without participating in a war they figured we might as well cut it down.
