first!
well i guess we will be enlisting against this guy…………….racists
relax. They did it on purpose. The guy in the picture knew what he was posing for.
GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY
Howard Cosell would be proud!
I can’t help finding this racist…
Good, I’m not the only one who saw something wrong with this
Racist
I read something about this cover once, and I’m pretty sure they did that on purpose. It’s still awesome though.
If it was, giselle’s breasts should be exposed.
Actually, even if it isn’t, they should be.
hahahaha WIN
Compare fail.
The magazine cover was intentional. And Vogue got flack for it.
Yeah, they were comparing this cover to a King Kong-esce image in the news so this is old by a few months now. And I’m usually not one to call racist, but the Vogue people are either idiots or assholes.
Quit being so sensitive ya wussies. Great comparison.
…. mmmm not so sure about this.
Hey this totally looks like entry totally looks like other comparisons that have been made in the media since March 2008 when the cover came out and caused national controversy.
Why is it people can’t make fun of black people without being called racist? The only way to truly not be racist is to make fun of EVERYONE equally.
Do you realize what you just said?
Maybe it’s because whites have been making fun of blacks for hundreds of years, and the comparison of them to apes is the most basic and deeply rooted. Have you seen old blackface cartoons? Do you realize how damaging they are?
Do you realize how old those cartoons are? Do you realize that the majority of people (including myself) are ashamed that those cartoons even exist, and also think it was horrible that someone along the way found that entertaining?
So according to you, it’s OK for black people everywhere to make fun of white people (just listen to any black comedian), but as soon as anyone white makes any comment about a person of color (whether a complement or not) it’s viewed as “racist”.
Is that some sort of payback? If so, how rediculous.
Look, I think that many things in the past suck. Nazis, nuclear weapons, torture, 9/11, slavery, the civil war, Vietnam war, etc. But you know what? Those things taught us lessons as a “human race” to help grow our character, and make us who we are today. You could argue that we could not have progressed as a civilization had those things not have happened. You could also argue that those things should have never have happened.
Even in your own life, there are things that you wish you hadn’t done, however, those things, along with the things you’re proud of, shape who you are.
I thought civil rights was about equality? Not sticking it in the face of those whose ancestors treated your ancestors poorly. (Some countries still fight wars over that. Is that what you want?)
It’s interesting how white people continually get trounced over slavery and racism, when no one cares to trounce the Africans who sold the slaves to white people in the first place.
Im just sick of the “inequality” in this supposedly “equal” time.
I have to agree with you. After all, that guy mustn’t have found it racist to pose for that cover shot.
Note: the original poster says “destroy this mad brute”. On the vogue cover it looks like the basketball player is daring his opposing team to try it. Meanwhile, the – white – ‘damsel’ doesn’t look too distressed about hanging on his arm, does she?
she’s actually brazilian
Brazilian is a nationality, not a race. She’s still white. A white Brazilian.
I really doubt that Nazis, 9/11, Vietnam and the civil war have taught you anything. And nuclear weapons and torture are not “things in the past”. The greatest mistake that people make is believe that society has somehow got better and kinder in the last 2000 years. It didn’t!!!
First of all, you know nothing about me, so don’t pretend to insult me.
I can read history books just like anyone else, and yes, those events have taught me plenty.
And the ADVENT of nuclear weapons and torture did happen in the past, they weren’t “invented” yesterday.
“The greatest mistake people make” is listening to people like you who like to generalize and make blanket statements about things they don’t unerstand.
Let’s look at some things that were once accepted by society and are now not accepted (in the US):
-We don’t dump our feces on the streets anymore.
-Public stonings are outlawed.
-Murder is a punishable crime.
-Rape is a punishable crime.
-Burning people alive is a punishable crime.
-Slavery is a punishable crime.
-Dueling is no longer the primary method of settling disputes.
And (in the US and many parts of the world):
-Life expectancy is longer than it ever has been.
-Bleeding is no longer a primary medical “treatment”.
-Most people live within 30 miles of a hospital, in which they cannot be refused treatment for life threatening injuries regardless of race, color, legal status, or citizenship.
I could go on…
But you are entitled to your opinion.
OK, how about?
- We dump our feces in the ocean instead, along with toxic waste.
- Public stoning are outlawed, but tethering people to death by police is perfectly fine.
- Murder and rape may be punishable crimes, but still committed every day, while wrong innocent people often keep getting punished for it all the time, and no one gives a sh*t.
- Burning people alive is a punishable crime, but burning thousands of Iraqis with napalm and blowing up weddings in Afghanistan with missiles from remote controlled drones is perfectly fine.
- Yet there are millions of illegal immigrant slaves in the US currently doing all dirty work for practically no pay and no social protection.
- Dueling is no longer the primary method of settling disputes. Actually, I think this a loss. When you know you might get killed, you would think twice before being groundlessly involved in a dispute.
- Life expectancy is longer, but health is poorer, due to all the poison in the air and water. Ask you grandmother if she had an allergy?
- Bleeding is no longer a primary medical “treatment”. Learn history, and be amazed at the sophistication of medicine in earlier civilizations.
- Most people live within 30 miles of a hospital, in which they cannot be refused treatment for life threatening injuries regardless of race, color, legal status, or citizenship. Well in Soviet Union there was free health care, free education and free housing. Yet you still think communism sucks, don’t you?
I could go on as well. And, yeah, I never insulted you, or pretended to insult you. But let me give you a little advice: if you truly consider yourself a smart person, never be afraid to look at the flip side of any issue and never be 100% sure of anything. But, like you said, it is your right to listen or to reject this advice.
I am sick and tired of people claiming that health is worse now than it used to be because these days so many people who arguably should otherwise have died years ago from infectious diseases have a little sniffle. Boo fucking hoo wanna swap your asthma for some TB? or smallpox? or maybe just have a 70% infant mortality ratio – then we wont have all these annoying sickly peaople around because they would all be DEAD.
Have some gratitude for some existence as you obviously should have been naturally selected out years ago, you ignorant fool.
natural selection has its purpose…. like eliminating closed minded arrogant jerks who offer no real benefit to life as a WHOLE. life cannot exist without death. u exhaust the environment needed to sustain life, then there will be NO LIFE. did u ever think that death is SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN?!!? sheesh
And if you truly are sick of double standards, ask yourself, how can you live in a country, that is up to its ears in these double standards. Hypocrisy of the US is astounding, yet you don’t even notice it, do you?
You decry the “hypocrisy” of the US, but look at the rest of the world. The US has done more to liberate the oppressed, feed the hungry, heal the sick and defend the weak than any other nation on this planet, at any time in history. I am sick of people in other countries demanding that the US apologize for its very existence, and I am even sicker that our own president is now capitulating on that very count. Whom should we emulate — Cuba? Their own citizens fester in substandard medical facilities while tourists get the best treatment. Europe? They are wallowing in political correctness and being overrun by radicals who want to impose a new caliphate on the West. Africa? Let’s not even get started.
Your little rant about hypocrisy is a joke. We’re not perfect. We don’t claim to be. Clean your own house first, then tell us how to live.
I don’t think that the US should apologise for its existence. I just think that it should get the beam out of its own eye, before it picks at the sliver in the eyes of other countries.
Cuba festers? US sanctions against Cuba (followed by the fall of the Soviet Union) destroyed its economy. Health care? Sure, the US has lots of hospitals within walking distance of many people, and those hospitals don’t refuse to minister to people – but those same people can’t afford the care, and how many go bankrupt trying to pay the bills?
No, it’s not perfect. Humanity being what it is, no nation will ever be perfect. But forget needing to emulate people– look at the problems at home, acknowledge the rampant crime and drug abuse and poverty and human rights abuses, and stop pretending that your invasion of other countries is for the good of those countries. Fix your own problems first.
… I just have to note that many hospitals cannot legally turn anyone away, even if they cannot pay for their care.
Also, if you make healthcare (a limited resource) available to everyone, demand becomes infinite. When you have a resource that can never satisfy demand (we can never make medical care an unlimited resource) shortages occur.
So, yes, we could offer healthcare for free to everyone in the USA – ideally it is a good action. However, are you willing to take the risk? Would you be fine with the fact that hospitals could run out of some important medicine that could save your life or the life of your child?
Its funny how you think America has done more than anyone else to make to world ‘a better place’. The fact is you throw money at third world nations and it goes straight into the pockets of corrupt politicians. You stick your nose in middle eastern countries and make the situation even worse. I know you guys hate china and their policies but they have done more for developing African countries in 10 years than America ever has. The Chinese have treated us like business partners and not like begging strays like America has.I know they’re in it for themselves but they’ve helped hugely along the way. I think America should focus on it’s own major problems from now on and leave everyone else to their own devices.
Yeppers, gonna go with lolness on this one…think everybody would be better off if the U.S stopped trying to ‘help’. Just trade, don’t invade : )
so true : )
Do not blame the people in the US for that, blame our federal government. Trust me, the people do not want a global empire. We just want to live here, and be left alone (at least those of us who don’t have our heads straight up our asses).
Not blame the people, but the federal government? The federal goverment elects itself, I presume?
Trust me, the American people are NOT happy with the federal government. Our president acts more like a rock star than a head of state.
We also have way too many folks making careers in Congress. Term limits on these offices would solve this problem. Getting the lobbyists out of D.C. would help in this area as well.
And I forgot to say, way too many people don’t even vote.
TehRika, haven’t you ever heard the expression of “selling a seat.” as far as government is concerned. We didn’t ask for random assholes to take up seats with congress and such. Voting doesn’t count for shit here. So you know what, YES the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTS WHOEVER THE HECK THEY WANT! Not my fault you’re so pissy with my country. We don’t vote for the President to send our troops to other countries. We don’t care to invade or “help.” I wish it’d stop. There’s too many problems here as is. Yet for some reason none of the higher-ups care about fixing problems here.
And as far as the U.S. being so racially biased, what about the international news case about the London Underground worker getting sued for racism just for biting the head off of a black version of a sour patch kid candy in front of a black worker.
You should stop casting stones, hypocrite.
Hi, I’d like to know ….what did slavery/oppression/jim crow/police brutality/excessive force/job descrimination/education disparities/and unequal laws-legal prosecution teach YOU …especially since it all continues and is STILL going on TODAY ….I thought so. Racism is an institution sweetie, didn’t change yesterday and hasn’t changed today.
And when you speak of “punishable crimes” …..”punishable” for who ….surely not when it is against people of color. Need I go down the list of all of the INNOCENT UNARMED people that have been killed by America’s ‘friends’ THE BOYS IN BLUE ….with NO PROSECUTIONS, “reasonable doubt” my ass!
Or the people who like to seek ‘vigilante justice’ on black people or the ones that just so happens like to blame the latest crime on the most convenient black person around.
Oh, just never mind.
You’ll probaby never get it.
Lets see, what did all of that teach me… Hmmm… lets see. OH! I’ve got it! It taught me to not be a DICK, and act like people that do those things.
But it’s YOU that doesn’t get it. I’ve seen so many people talking about “you see what you’re programmed to see”, specifically referring to stereotypes. Well “dy”, it goes BOTH ways.
I don’t think that anyone here denies that lots of people are discriminated against, my self included. BUT, it is absolutely REDICULOUS for ANYONE to blieve that people of color are the ONLY victims. Is that how you see it? As African-Americans (or any other race for that matter) are ALWAYS the victim? Obviously, as you only see people of color as the receptors of “vigilante justice”, or “the most convenient black person around” as the person blamed for the crime. What a sad world you must live in if that’s all you see.
And so for those things that you and others like you say “only happen to black people”, you’re the ones that are in denial.
Here’s one example (among many) of someone who was killed while doing his fucking JOB by the police, and they got away with it… http://www.wsoctv.com/news/10168191/detail.html
Believe me too when I say that things like the Rodney King beating is an atrocity, however, did that justify the LA riots so people could get new TVs and burn business to the ground? Or the beating of Reginald Denny? Is that what needs to happen? Stick it to “Whitey” Kill the “Crackers”?
You’d better bring better stuff that than if you expect anyone to feel sorry for you.
Because I’ve got news for you, all of us in the WORKING class had better figure out where we stand and learn how to get along and vote the right people in place in EVERY election if you want true EQUALITY.
But as long as this attitude continues with black people (or any other race) ALWAYS being the victim and ALWAYS seeing racism in EVERYTHING, along with people trying to STICK IT TO WHITE PEOPLE (those people are also racists by the way), then we won’t be able to move forward.
I await your reply, which I’m sure will be constructive, and a positive step in the right direction.
Like I said, never mind.
That is definately a positive step in the right direction, just shutting up.
Ahaha, I didn’t even bother to read the rest of it, but I’m just gonna point this out..
What country is getting the most “in” from other people? =]
The U.S.
What country helps Africa, gets their asses pirated, and still tries to help Africa?
The U.S. =]
Oh, and don’t say “The U.S fights war, oh no, bad country! Bad!”
You need to remember that we are a Super country, and we are pretty much always trying to save the unappreciative asses of countries being taken over by more powerful comunist countries.
AND LET’S NOT FORGET.
What country has the sexiest man on Earth, Will Smith, on it?
The U.S. =]
Let us also not forget that candy is delicious!
Hear F***in’ Hear!
Well said!
WIN^^
re-posting this because I doubt the moderators will let it slide before it’s out of date, and I got censored the 1st time:
Yes, they ARE in fact damaging. But when you take old stereotypes and make them your own, you change them, and the connotations, and they can no longer hurt you. Take, for example, “qu**r” or “n*gg*r” or what have you. Yes, they CAN still damage in circumstances. But not so much when it is a mockery by those who would have been put down by it and they’re having fun with it.
“Queer” is NOT a dirty word. I take offense to your implication that it is.
…I’m gay. For the record, it was once highly derogatory. Were you aware of that?
wow, you totally missed the point of that post. if you could read, you would realize the post was about how you can take something that USED TO BE a derogatory and hurtful word and turn it into a common word that does not hurt by adopting it into your own culture.
ughh
I miss the old days… when queer didn’t even have a negative connotation. Back when it meant odd or strange, but in a good way.
I didn’t know queer used to be derogatory. This changes everything! And to think the Wizard of Oz was a children’s book! I’m such a 12 year old
And your point is?!?
This is TODAY, not YESTERYEAR!!! There is something that is called hypocracy, and some blacks who complain about this fall into it.
Besides, best thing to do if someone is truly insulting you is to ignore it. Remember. Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt.
Aaaaaah. I love the smell of whiteys in the morning screaming “REVERSE RACISM” the moment they are told they shouldn’t be racist in public.
Classic.
Oppression and White supremacism =/= not something of the past. “Majority” means something. Not matter how much a bunch of whites want to deny it, it still there.
Hi, I’m a white Jew. Have we met?
Oh, I’m sorry- Half-Cherokee Jew.
you are a total …. just go away
Shut up, dude. It isn’t like you got whipped in a field or were the first black child to go to an all white school OR got shot like MLK jr. Those people, the ones that actually suffered, they have a right to be offended. But you.. you’re just a modern-day faggot, like the rest of us, who cant possibly fully understand why and how bad shit like that was. So stop complaining about racism, I think we’ve made some BIIIIIG fucking strides since our country started.
omg yessss!…. you are right on it. tank you!!!! ^^
Damaging? When was the last time someone was actually ‘damaged’ because of someone wearing blackface?
agreed. relax, people. bigotry has never been exclusively white.
God forbid we laugh at a black guy! Christ, you people are stupid. i agree with you: people need to laugh at it and be done with it. ITS.FUNNY.
Black guys make fun of white people
White people make fun of black people
Lighten the F up people, its 2009. there’s a fine line between universal humour and racism, Geez!
agree. if race is a defining social standard for a person, they are racist. whether they are openly negative and hateful, or whether another person’s race determines how polite they are to them. being overly sensitive to a person and go out of your way to be nice to them because u are afraid to offend them makes you racist. because you are treating people not based on their person, but the color of their skin.
STOP THE NONSENSE!!!
Stop arguing.
You’re ALL wrong okay? and I don’t care who started it.
just share your frikking icecream and let momma watch ‘er stories.
racist much?
Explain how. Because it’s been months, and I’m still not seeing it.
It’s promoting black supremacy. It’s saying black people are strong conquerors, and that white people are helpless dainty lasses that need to be saved.
Or it’s the other way around, that it compares blacks to apes. Which is it? And is it important enough to get upset about?
And is it important enough to get upset about?
I don’t know. White much?
You do realise that hating white people for being white is a bit weird, right?
This is supposed to be a joke site…getting a bit serious…
Black much?
I’m white and happy about it.
You’re black, and happy about it.
Go ahead and talk about how bad whitey is all you want – whitey is happy he is white. What’s your d*mn point? Do you think we want to be you? WRONG. LOL.
You’ll never understand me and I’ll never understand you. You’ll want to cry about how bad your have it, and vice versa.
Do you know what makes me stronger in this situation? Apathy, sweetie. I don’t care – you do. It bothers you – not me. My blood doesn’t boil – yours does. Sorry.
dumb ass much?
Actually, the original cartoon is depicting Germans (in WWI), not blacks, as apes. Let that mess with your head a bit. I still think the mag cover is unacceptable, but I think the way we can totally shift our understandings of racialized symbolism in a few generations is fascinating.
Overanalyzed much?
funny thing about all this is that Gisele is from Brazil. not really considered ‘white’. haha.
Umm…am I really confused about what classifies a person as white? Or is there a more complicated colour-coding for white people…like for dulux paints? I’m seeing a gray/cool white here.
Then yes, you are confused. Skin color is not the only factor in determining whether someone is white. Michael Jackson has lighter skin than some of my friends of European ancestry.
?? do you know from were the Bündchen name comes from? I don’t know what color are you, lets say you are white, and have a son, with a white woman and the baby is born in Brazil, then according to you he’s not going to be considered white.
i think ur all retarded. it is not intended to be racist! do you honestly think that if this was truely meant to be racist to african americans…… that the huge buff black dude would have posed for it!!!!!!!!!!! morons
I had no idea the Germans had giant monkeys!
How did they not win?
they were distracted by our battalion of hot white chicks.
German women are much hotter…
shes Brazilian stupid.
That doesn’t change the fact that German women are much hotter
ROFLMAO
Win. OwO
Thank you Steve, for putting the funny back in the comments.
bravo! LOL!
I wonder if the subjects were aware of the poster.
I’m almost certain they were aware of it as a King-Kong reference. And from what I gather about his personality from interviews and whatnot, I think LeBron found it hilarious.
Good for him! I like the fact that they both knew of the reference and thought it was cool. That goes to show that some of us out there are mature enough to take a joke and not reduce everything to the ridiculous “cry-racist” mentality. I saw this cover and I thought it was neat. I didn’t see it as a monkey = black guy picture. I took it as a a visual comparison of himself to a big brave animal saving the damsel in distress, like in the movie King-Kong.
I guess it takes a closet racist to see the racism in everything.
well said!!! exactly the point i was making earlier!!! people who are quick to see racism in everything they come across are they themselves racist!!
Why is this racist? Because there is an ape in one and a black man in the other? Is it because racist people in the past have compared black people to apes? You know, as far as I can tell, anyone that really thinks this is racist is extremely guilty of promoting the continuation of racial stereotyping. As long as those people continue to be on their holier than thou pulpit racism will never go away. We should fight racism on all fronts, including those extremist that are so racist that they think every little thing that comes along is racism.

Maybe the ape should have been painted as a white monkey so it wouldn’t be racist? … get a grip.
I think it is a good TLL.
That is pretty weird how much the two pictures look alike.
That is a brilliant pairing.
It’s kinda racist because the black guy is compared to the ape, but EVEN IF YOU IGNORE THAT the pictures really REALLY look alike.
Annie Leibowitz (the photographer) did that on purpose. One of her themes is recreating famous artworks in her photos.
“Annie Leibowitz (the photographer) did that on purpose. One of her themes is recreating famous artworks in her photos.”
yes and as everyone knows a black man is a perfect substitute for an ape.
c’mon, gimme a break, Annie Leibowitz should have known better. And whomever posted this should know better too.
This comparison belongs in failblog. Its completely fail.
The black man you see there in the photo _knew_ what he was being compared to. It’s not as if he was offended. Why should you be? Get a grip.
That’s right. He only got put in the picture because he was black. If he wasn’t available, they were going to use Gary Coleman.
Yeah, that would have worked….totally.
Touchy, touchy.. even as a LeBron fan I don’t mind the comparison. Didn’t someone else get compared to Gollum or a horse?? So you’re not allowed to make a totallylookslike if its hits too close to home? I thought this was a great comparison – the poses, the green dress and all. Ten again, Vogue intentionally made it so.
BLACK PRIDE. seeing that all over the place now since Obama got elected, and I really like the guy, but if I for one moment uttered the word WHITE PRIDE anywhere I’d be racist. Stop making me feel guilty for being white, no one had control over what color they were, ever.
-just wanna be American. (if you’re from the U.S. that is, if not then uh.. no worries <3)
Nicely said. I’m tired of feeling guilty for being white and living down south. I’ll keep what you said in mind.
here here, but in reality Obama’s only 1/2 black (but he’ll probably continue to be noted as “Black” until he screws up. At THAT point people will probably state the fact he’s 1/2 “White”)
hear hear!
and this whole “this poster is racist” thing is crap. I think it’s highly suspicious that Vogue is mimicking WWI propaganda so closely, but the idea of black people being compared to apes never popped into my head. *rolls eyes*
Not every race is without fault (CLAIMING so would be racist) and history makes it easy to stereotype whites, blacks, etc. Saying that human nature as a whole is evil would be more accurate, not just blaming one particular division.
I say be proud of whatever color you are. (And don’t call me racist if I say I don’t like Obama. If he was white I still wouldn’t vote for him.) Defend yours all you like, but don’t attack others’. And learn to relax! Touchy touchy subject much.
People calling racist are actually TRYING to look at it that way. Ignore the fact that it’s a similar stance and blonde chick in a green dress, you gotta tunnel vision between LeBron and an ape and PC-rage.
If someone didn’t cry “racist,” would the comments die?
no doubt =D
…all we need now is someone to start calling other people Hitler and you know how it goes from there
Shut up Hitler.
OH NOES! *dies*
I wouldn’t piss him off. Last time someone told Hitler to shut up, well…you know.
Comparing that poor ape to a black man? Racist!
AH HA HA
Love you.
Human beings are apes. Hominoidea, to use taxonomic terms.
no, no, no, do NOT open up another can of worms here, by making claims about the origin of humans, because you KNOW I gotta disagree with you there XD
because you have such a close personal relation ship with “God” that you feel mighty enough to judge and decide the limits of his power which the Bible and other religious ravings in print claim to be infinite? HA! you hollow empty thing.
heresy!!!
Now that’s funny… and I’m black (with a sense of humor).
totally love you!
One of Lebron’s nicknames is “King James”. It was intentional.
well, he agreed to do this. and it was actually modeled after this photo.
Nobody, double standards, and at wit’s end: Very defensive of you. Is it really that scary to try and see the world through someone else’s eyes? Why don’t you spend less time trying to convince yourselves that you don’t have a bias, and spend more educating yourselves as to why such a thing as this is hurtful.
At wit’s end: Racism won’t go away just by pretending it isn’t there. Not confronting it is just a way of avoiding taking any part in the hard work of ending discrimination. (But why would you want to do that when you would have to give up the perks of being on top?!)
Double standards: no, it’s not right for anyone to be stereotyped, (carlos mencia is a jackass), but just because you saw a few individuals on t.v. do it, you’re going to do it, too? And it isn’t a matter of what life was like centuries ago. It’s about the inequality directed towards minorities that happens today. And if you don’t think there is any, you are totally in the dark. Why don’t you try and educate yourself about what life is like for people different than you. Read some Ralph Ellison or Maya Angelou, or get engaged in the Black community, (that is, if you’re not too scared.)
And finally, nobody, the problem with “joking” about stereotypes, even when it’s about all races, is that they’re not true. At all! They’re falsehoods that are used to justify discrimination. And don’t try and tell me that you know some guy that acts in such a way or that every time you see a group they are acting as such, because that’s what your eyes have been trained to see in people, and one person does not a trend make.
It was a “scientific fact” two centuries ago that Africans had not evolved as far as Europeans, and that they were closer to apes, (and hence the reason why this cover is so not cool.) Obviously that’s wrong, but those people would have sworn it was true as adamantly as some people today would argue that Black people really do jump higher and love big rims.
I’m sorry; I didn’t start wanting rant or be mean. I know feelings are raw on both sides, but despite the burns, we can’t give up on trying to bridge the gap.
Really, you have no way of knowing that at wit’s end and double standards aren’t black themselves. assuming that they’re white, “on top” and “scared” of the black community just because they disagree with you is pretty messed up. one black journalist even wrote an article about how people are too sensitive, using this cover as an example. crying racism at everything perpetuates it just as much as displaying it; it brings so much more attention to it and creates an image of minorities as fragile victims, further separating them from being just another assembly of human beings.
You are right to say my statements are generalized – unfortunately this is the nature of posting. I most liking will never get to meet in person the commentators I addressed, and so we will never get the chance to have an honest discussion about race.
The four of us were among the earliest to comment, and these three caught my attention because the issues they raised are often brought up in debates about racial topics. While I addressed specific commentators in my post, I was aware that I was also addressing a wider audience.
The goal of my post was to get people to challenge their ideas. My comments were sharp, for certain, and my hope was that it would “hit home” for some people and get them thinking. I knew my statements would not apply to everyone, and I expected a lot of angry replies. I guess my posts are just too long to bother reading.
Also, I pick up what you’re putting down about “PC outrage” being counterproductive. The White Guilt movement did assume only Whites had the power to “Lift up” Blacks, but that’s an outdated school of thought. Minorities shouldn’t have to grin and bear it because of what “others” might think of them if they spoke their opinion. That’s actually worse, because than minorities are changing themselves to win the majority’s approval.
Speaking as a woman, I’ve gotten used to slurs and stereotypes that go with identifying and fighting sexism. If I and women like me shut up, the talk of “bitches” and “femi-nazis” would fade, but we wouldn’t be any better off!
Hey. Went To College.
Re-read Double Standards’ post. I doubt that he/she/whomever is “affraid of blacks”. Like you, they were just calling for another viewpoint.
Also. The original painting was a slur against Nazis, calling them Apes (note the German helmet etc). Seeing as the Nazis were so consumed with purity, and race (which doesn’t exist, read an Anthropology 100 textbook), the original is kindof ironic, and not about “black” people at all.
You are coming very late into the discussion. While my post appears far down the line at this point because of nesting, Double Standard had only made one post at the time I made mine. Rasicm does spread out in many different directions, and that is a valid point of Double Standard’s part. If you re-read his orignal post, however, he lumps objections to racist images about Blacks into simply retaliatory remarks, and not legitimate viewpoints.
I am well aware there that there is no biological basis for the division of people into races. There is certainly a continuing socially-constructed idea of “race”, and to ignore that is naive! (Re-read that Anth textbook.)
I suggest that you look toward studies of the Victorican Era of the British Empire, when there was also a social concern about “keeping the race pure.” When you learn about the rhetoric that was used to justify the continuation of oppression and emperialism, rhetoric that has continued to this day, then you will see there is most certainly racist imaging here! I can’t emphasize that enough. There’s really not enough space here for me to spell out that much history.
And yes, that makes the poster ironic, but not quite in the way you think. It’s like the poster’s saying, “Hey, you thought Blacks were bad, check out the Nazis! Nazis are the new Blacks”. Next time know your stuff before you try to call someone out.
Dude, do you really think it works that way? People are tribal. Simple as that. You can espouse racial equality till the cows come home, but it doesn’t change the fact that people of all ‘races’ are still going to find another way of discriminating against each other. It’s all just an attempt to find your place in the world and assert tribal dominance.
*Beats chest, grabs white woman and climbs Empire State Building*
Just join in, it’s good fun…besides, it must be pretty lonely up there on that pedestal.
lol. you made me smile. I am on a pedestal. But I’m only 4′11″, so I need it to make eye-contact.
first of all!!! do you know what minority means? in this context it means one demographic of people are smaller in numbers than others inhabiting the same geographical area. and if you were at all educated in the last 10 years in this subject (obviously not) you would know that African american residents in large city demographics OUT NUMBER WHITE PEOPLE!! and Latin American residents out number African Americans. idiot.
King Kong was our enemy in World War 1? Huh, I guess all these history books are misprinted.
INCREDIBLY racist.
And INCREDIBLY awesome for it.
Not sure if the image will embed, but I’ll try:
nope, it didn’t embed.
think about this, too:
his nickname is king james. why isn’t he posing here as royalty? is this the only suggestion vogue had for a powerful black man? power translates only to brute strength? maybe he agreed to do it, but it’s still racist; maybe he didn’t think it through. white people have been comparing black people to primates for a long, long time, saying that they’re not as ‘evolved’, or are more
‘primitive’–it’s social dawinism, something that led to the nazi movement and to eugenics. it’s disgusting and demeaning and shouldn’t be accepted. now do you see why this is racist?
uh, lebron james has done a hundred times posing as royalty. this was his way of trying something new.
…or he could be laughing at it. Turning it on its head, and all that…
Dude, seriously, didn’t anyone learn from the Washington Post debacle? Oh yeah, in world war one, there was in fact a war in Africa going on as well as in Europe. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a reference, albeit one that was in fact INTENDED to be racist, to the war in Africa.
it was OBVIOUSLY a propaganda poster.. considering it says at the bottom to ENLIST (meaning into the military). and to STOMP THIS MAD BRUTE while the gorrilla has his foot on the word America. The beast is meant to be seen as a symbol of destruction, im sure the damsel in distress is possibly Lady Liberty. Its all political, not racist, the magazines use of it in modern context is seen as racist because of social paranoia of stepping on peoples toes. everyone who has posted hints that they think its racist, not because they themselves are offended but because they think someone else might be. The original poster is 100% political, for WWI and nothing to do with Africa, you only associate it with Africa because ‘oh, its got an ape in it’. It would be natural for someone trying to mimic this poster to want to use a human that had similar features to the figure in the poster, the blond slim girl, a dark skinned man. To be angry at that would also be to say it would be ok to let Tom Cruise play Martin Luther King Jr. in a movie (dont be racist cuz hes white!..hope you get my point when i say that, not trying to be offensive by that.)
well be prepared to NOT be surprised. because you are wrong.
Doesn’t it make you racist for automatically assuming it’s referring to Africa?
do us all a favor and go back to your fifth grade world history book. there WAS a war in Africa during world war 1 to which many similar propaganda posters referred.
This is disgustingly racist.
I’m sure you feel the same way about all that Mammy memorabilia selling on ebay.
(wonder what color the buyers are?)
More like you are disgustingly ignorant.
Although….her name is before his….
It is a conspiracy!!!
The irony.
Does this site have a moderator? If so, you fail. Take this racist crap down.
you are so dumb.
is that all your small mind can come up with in this debate? surely you jest!
and ugh, just reread through the comments.
1) WWI was fought in MANY different theaters. We didn’t just fight the Germans, guys. That’s why it’s called a WORLD WAR.
2) The original cartoon was meant to be racist. Compares all brown people to primates, makes them less than human. That’s what racism does. Makes other people easier to victimize as they become less than human in bigoted minds.
3) I’m sure Vogue wasn’t trying to be racist. This was just incredibly thoughtless. I also truly doubt Vogue was trying to be ironic. We don’t need to be politically correct all the time, but something like reinforces the status quo.
4) We still need to remember the atrocities of slavery in this country for many reasons. The most important is that there is STILL institutionalized racism in this country. Just because we have a black president (of whom I am extremely proud, and not just because he is black) doesn’t mean racism has just gone away. Look at the state of inner city schools. Look at how republicans try to gerrymander districts. It’s still here.
5) Racism is a purely social concept. There is not biological basis for ‘race’. There’s more biological variation between individuals in a ‘race’ than between socially constructed racial categories. This cartoon reinforces the idea that there are biological differences between races, and that blacks are subhuman. That is why it is disgusting, and why it is sad that Vogue chose to use it.
This cover was the photographic equivalent of a jazz riff. And if you don’t understand that, you never will.
You are dead wrong Katie. The ape is wearing that helmet for a reason, he does “represent” Germany in this cartoon.
Calm down and stop trying to inject racism everywhere you go.
Thanks, Alex. Finally someone noticed. The ape (don’t call it monkey, that would be racist!) also has the word ‘Kultur’ (German for culture) carved into its’ bloody bat, as it’s standing on America’s shore to take away your lady of liberty. Hence, this poster was clearly defiling Germanhood. Where are you PCsters now?!
Now for the cover image: Made to resemble the WWI poster or not, the image delivers a well-known archetype – beauty and beast. There’s nothing inherently racist in that. The way it is enacted – a big black guy doing a gorilla routine and a sexy white chick being wax in his hands – is nothing new as well:
– It appeals to all black guys.
– It appeals to a lot of white chicks.
– It makes a lot of white dicks feel shriveled.
Racist? Oh well, if you must…
THEY’RE BOTH BASED ON THE KING KONG POSTER. GET A CLUE PEOPLE!
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3622804736/tt0024216
Yeah, thought so, but the King Kong movie came out 1933. So either the poster isn’t WWI but WWII propaganda, or the whole King Kong idea was inspired by that propaganda poster! =0
“he original cartoon was meant to be racist. Compares all brown people to primates, makes them less than human”
most primates are brown…. what color would you suggest that creature be? pink?
Thank you!
Folks I hate to inform you but they were NOT comparing all brown people to apes, it was common practice to show Germany/Germans as the “HUN” and the “HUN” were depicted as dark and sinister in nature. The brute was refering to the German attrocities in the first world war and the Gorilla unfortunately was seen as a universal symbol for evil. It’s why King Kong did so well in the box office.
The helm and germanic wording on the bat shows clearly that they were attacking Germany so please get over yourselves.
Sooooo….they are comparing basketball dood to a german????
Thats racist.
LOL
Yes this is a major problem. We must work together to reverse people’s attitudes that basketball players are inherently German!
Katie, please excuse me if I come across as rude, but I would like to offer an alternative view to your point #2. Before I start I would like to add that I totally agree with your point that race is an artificial, social construct.
The picklehaube (pointy helmut) and upturned mustache are unmistakable references to the German imperialist elite of that era. Specifically, the gorilla is probably intended to depict Kaiser Wilhelm 2.
You’re wrong professor fool! The gorilla has blue skin and white facial hair: an “unmistakable” reference to Papa Smurf!
The WWI giant Smurf conspiracy theory has compelling elements but has recently been summarily discredited.
Well-spoken. And Valid!
inner city schools go to crap because they are not taken care of by the inner city community! who tags up the walls and bashes the windows to break into the school lab? inner city kids. who congregates outside the gates of the school after the bell rings to catch the younger kids walkin home and jock them for their stuff? inner city kids. who breeds this behavior in every single generation born to this community? inner city kids havin babies. how do i know this? i went to inner city schools. did you?
o and i forgot about the school kids selling crack and heroin for their parents to support their drug habits cuz welfare comes on a credit card now. yes i was a welfare kid, had the same two pairs of pants for three years. wore shoes till my toes broke thru them from out growing the damn shoe. have you experienced this? if not.. shut the f*** up.
all this comes from the inner city community, not Buffy the white bitch 200 miles away in her penthouse totally unaware of her surroundings.
I’m completely against racism, but that goes both ways. You mention inner city schools, etc. How about scholarships restricted to african americans or native americans, etc. Racism goes both ways and needs to be completely removed from society. Boundaries need to be broken. PEOPLE are PEOPLE. I don’t think of people by their race. To me, our president is just another person in office, not a ‘black’ president but a president. People need to realize that.
this reminds me of that scene in the office when david brent said (paraphrasing) ‘well, if he doesn’t mind us laughing at him, then what’s the harm?”. and if you don’t understand that, you never will.
Since I’ve never SEEN the office, good bet.
You do understand that not everyone has the same set of experiences as you, right?
what’s important is the quote, not whether you’ve seen it or not. i’m commenting on the fact that people don’t understand (and i’m assuming you don’t) why it’s offensive, even though he agreed to take part in it.
i stand by my opinion(s). whatever statement vogue is trying to make, i think this was tasteless. and the comments on the board are very disturbing to me, whether or not people think cover is racist.
I have no context for the quote.
I understand why YOU think it’s offensive. I also understand why it is not.
thats a very odd paring
You do realize that the WWI propaganda poster was NOT a cartoon – it was meant to depict the enemy (at that time) who were the Germans. What country ever looked kindly at its enemies? I can only assume that the commentators on this poster are totally ignorant of US history. This was a nationalistic rallying point – not a racist comment.
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3622804736/tt0024216
movie came out in 1933 – the war poster was part of the cultural context of the time.
No, it wasn’t; the propaganda poster is from WWI. Whether you’re arguing for the racist or the non-racist viewpoint, if you don’t know history, STFU!
Sickening…
Oh no! He’s taking our white women!!
As a German I am insulted that I would be compared to a black man…I mean ape….LOL
We did have giant monkeys during WWII BTW. We just had too much fun playing with them and we don’t like to share our toys.
OMGOSH! This is hilareous!
This is racist…
I think it should be taken down…..
I think YOU’RE racist and should be taken down.
I think I’m part black…..
*headdesk*
uh isn’t this racist?
im pretty sure it was racist to compare these two things.
you literally just said that the african american totally looks like a gorilla
RACIST
wow.
Betcha every single person yelling “This is racist! Take it down!” is white.
LOL thats probably true.
I’m part black, so stfu. =]
nobody cares.
I am white.
Leave it up- it’s good for speculation.
I like it, I don’t think it’s racist.
And I’m a brazilian girl (just like Gisele, the girl in the pic).
A lot of people in Brazil are black. We don’t see racist propaganda in everything. People here see white and black people just as “people”.
Those who see racism in everything are the real racists. (There are some of those in Brazil, but nobody take them seriously)
God bless you, your comments are some of the most sane I’ve seen on this board
Im gonna take a shot for every time the word “Racist” is in this thread…
better buy 2 more bottles.
My new favorite game!
People!
This is up for his stance, not his color!
The reason its up here is at he’s making the same stance with his mouth and arms and she’s wearing the same color dress AND making the same pose.
No racism here.
I’m a little more worried about the fact that Lady Liberty appears to be topless than the idea that it could be racist.
More worried about exposed breasts than racism – are you an evangelical?
She’s French, you know.
LOL
Oh come on…It’s not cause he’s black…He’ friggin huge like a gorilla! They could probably use Hulk Hogan too
nevermind…Hulk Hogan would be the HULK
If you find this TLL racist, you should definitely check out Articles II and III of this! http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/napper56.html
win!
its racist. point blank. and nowhere do i see “black pride” written everywhere etc etc. i see a people getting together who have been exploited and oppressed for years being happy that someone who knows the struggle has made it out, and become president. dont be an idiot people!
A bunch of whiteys don’t want to get their fun ruined? Seriously, and you say that racism died, and it’s all about “reverse racism”. Thse comment speak for themselves
A black man, a minority, is compared to an ape. White people in comments are all “but my fun will be ruined, YOU are racist because you claim this is racist!!”
Dude, even the most idiotic person outside this site will see the blatant racism of this. White people are still regarded as superior to blacks in all parts of the world, not ONLY in USA. Wake up, I know your bubble is comfortable, but you are just making an ass of yourself.
“whiteys”? Who is making an ass of herself now?
She can’t see it. All black men are generic to her, all must represent an entire race, not just themselves. All the world has the same racial distinctions. Everyone has exactly the same point of view.
And she complains about other people’s bubbles…
Nah, really. I just can recognize white privileged idiots who want to be racist and show their shit in a post about a black man being compared to an ape.
Tell you how I do it? I look for a post where a black man is compared to an ape. I read the comments. I see white privileged idiots defending that shit. That’s how I do it. Not so hard, right?
Have you tried looking in your closet? Because I’m sure there’s another white privileged idiot in there, working away to keep the black man down. Oh, and another in the bathroom. TWO under the bed! OMG!
It must be a real burden for you, protecting an entire segment of humanity. Especially when some of them are so oblivious that they pose willingly for pictures. Fortunately, since black men are fungible, you can just find another one to be properly offended.
I can see where you would be coming from that it’s racist, but I also don’t think coming back saying things like “whitey” and “white privileged idiots” helps your argument. It only makes people angry with you and perpetuates racism. (Not “reverse racism” there’s no such thing. Racism is racism, no matter who the target is)
p.s. – NEVER would have made the connection between the black man and the ape if someone hadn’t brought it up. To me it just looks like a play on old artwork of the GERMAN enemy as many have pointed out.
White priveleded idiots?
And you’ve personally met….how many people making these comments? You know how much money they make and where they live. Oh! And while you checked on their economic situations, I suppose you sat down to tea with them and got a play by play as to their historical ethnicity and culture.
See this is why generalizing is so bad…and hurtful. It could potentially group other people in your category, putting them on the same base level as you: festering with ignorance and biggotry.
So satisfying to see someone give it frankly to these jerks.
And don’t forget the comments that go, “You’re a racist for calling me a racist! Even though I’ve made it clearly evident that I am one through all the racist comments I’ve posted. That makes you a the worse-racist-ever!” It’s sad to see adults trying to win an arguement with the “I am rubber, you are glue” defense.
And then there’s the, “Hey, you can’t make generalized statements about me! But generalized stereotypes about Black people, like in this poster, that’s cool.” And you gotta love the people freaking out over the sarcastic use of “Whitey”, with all the, “chill out and stop saying everything is rasicm!” remarks up here. You’re just proving her point for her, bigots! It doesn’t feel good to be stereotyped when it happens to you, does it?
Cheer up, Lisa. The world’s not full of idiots. Just the internet.
Careful now Lisa…
YOUR racism is showing.
tsk, tsk.
it seems to me, lisa, that you’ve made more racist comments on this page than anyone else, including the post itself. your racist comments are only directed at white people however, which according to you seems to somehow makes them not racist at all.
that makes it hard to take anything you say seriously
And, you mean that I’m oppressing poor white people by telling them they don’t have they right to be racist? Yeah. I will be going then. I’m just responding to racist white people. What in the world could be worse? A poster promoting the death and dehumanization of a black man? Never.
Yeah. The idiocy burns. I’m going.
…thank you…
…I give up too. Now, I ask you another one. What is it got big black-a moustache, smokes a big black cigar, and is a big pain in the neck?…
But the original artwork was not intended to denigrate black people – it was intended to depict the Germans in a horrifying light. This kind of vilification happens every time a nation goes to war against a nation with a different culture – depicting the other guys as inhuman, in order to rally support for the home team, so to speak. The German army, the Nazis, the Communists, more recently the Muslims – they all come under attack. It is stupid, but it’s what happens. The PoC do it to whitey at the same time.
Now, the Vogue cover, that was rather tasteless. But I’m pretty sure that LeBron has the ability to say, “hell no I’m not doing that shite”, and he didn’t say no.
The TLL – well, it’s obviously a TLL, whether or not it’s tasteful. The fact that it got on the front page only means that enough people who thought it was funny voted positively for it.
Personally, when a TLL bothers me, I just move on. It’s not worth spending time arguing politics and colour. You won’t change people’s minds about what’s racist or not; they have to change their own minds. State your position, if you want to take a stance, and move on.
Just sayin’.
Buh-Bye now!
WOOHOOOOO!!!!
I wonder, people claiming this is “the past” have you seem pictures of white people being compared to brute animals who must be killed in our western world? (And no, I’m not talking about “white people being killed by other white people” that would make just too obvious who has the power.)
Some privileged people just don’t seem to grasp reality. Past affects us. Past made us who we are now. And past is till here.
I know, I know this is a hard concept to grasp by frat boys who love to dehumanize and denigrate black people. But bear with me.
And you have to learn to move on from the past or else you’ll never advance in life (this is true on a personal level as well as a larger scale).
I say that only because you never said “..and we have to learn to move on and progress”
You can’t progress in a positive direction (you, in general) without knowing your past and saying to yourself “My past is behind me”. The past IS behind you, stop living in it!
Do I think this is racist? Do I think it’s funny/? A little. Do I think the two look a like? Yes, because he’s supposed to – in his pose. Does that make me racist? Eh, probably a little. We’re all a little racist, admit it =)
I thought you were leaving?
Oh, but I went. You could look at the time. Now I came back, but just for trolling.
You know, I kinda feel better when I troll a bunch of racist uneducated idiots. Nothing I say it’s going to make you learn. So…
Its staged stupid. The more controvercy the more sold. Who do you think leaked out the WW I photo? Same people that copied it.
oh mon dieu.
lisa you’re making a fool of yourself. it’s best that you go now before it gets worse.
Amen
An ass of myself in front of a bunch of white bigots? Yes, I do that pretty well. I’m not much into that majority.
I don’t recall making any claims about my race.
I’ll agree with the ass part, however.
Dude. I’m dying to know your race.
Gender FAIL.
Race FAIL.
Clue FAIL.
What about us brown bigots? There’s more than white and black you know!
This gal is the ‘pot calling the kettle black’.
LOL, keep on with your diatribe…seriously, you are amusing.
honestly, I’m surprised no one has resorted to calling you race related names??
must be the fact that they don’t want to stoop your level.
This comparison is simply proves that, on a very general level, white people still think that Black people are apes.
It’s sad, really…it’s 2009.
So you know the person who did the comparison?
Personally, I cant tell that Dollarway is white.
Lots of assumptions by stupid people.
Rorschach much?
You know, all you people crying “racist!” You remind me of this story:
http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/dallas-county-meeting-turns-ra.html
If you don’t feel like going to that link, here the gist: Some (white) senator used the term ‘black hole’ (as in, you know, the ones in space) and someone jumped up and called him a racist. Does that make sense? The person said something to the effect of, “What if I said ‘white hole’?” Should this be considered admirable behavior?
No. It’s all just race-baiting. It’s ridiculous.
Read that article.
Excellent.
You are on the money.
Article Totally looks like this Thread.
So what do we call the pimples that havent quite formed yed? White Heads? But wait those are the extra nasty pimples ready to pop…Dammit now I am offended!!! Not-so-white-heads…there that should please the race-baiters.
Kudos Kirbstir!
When people were holed up in the Louisiana Superdome during hurricane Katrina, running out of water, running out of supplies and food, there was a big scandal because of “racist graffiti” that had been put in the bathrooms.
The graffiti? Someone had posted signs that said “If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.” Couldn’t possibly have been about saving water…
Dude,
you forgot to mention that, while in the superdome, they totally trashed the place. you know? pissed and shit in the isles.
Oh! How about when Alabam took them in?
Cant forget their gratitude there!
Ahhh, NOLA- the ‘Chocolate City’
How can, when a group wants too, they organize a million man march- for black rights….
But they couldn’t organize a bunch of vacant school buses to leave before a hurricane.
http://www.isteve.com/New_Orleans_School_Buses.jpg
To my knowledge- the words ‘NO’ or ‘Dont Do that’ has never stopped anybody before.
The irony of so many of these comments is the true lol.
So many black and white points of view to a very complex issue.
Amusing and sad at the same time.
I’m just from Canada, but what do I know. Isn’t this poster saying that the Germans are like Apes?? So really…they are comparing black people to Germans?? But all the wimpering “I’m a victum how dare you upset me” are grabbing some old racist reference and running with it.
I like one of the first points that were made. The blacks sold the blacks into slavery…so start pointing your finger at yourself and shake it.
I remember reading something about a War in American…something to do with…ummm….hmmm…what was it again. White people fighting other white people to free black people…and ummmm people died to free them. So why don’t you wind up…reach really far back, and slap all the people that died for equality in the face.
I’m a good person, sometimes a bad person. A girl, who sometimes says to herself while driving “oh look at the person they can’t park, no wonder it’s some chick” or “that person can’t drive between the lines, must be Asian”. I even sometimes make fun of my Jewish friends and make jokes about them being cheap. So guess I’m racist. Or maybe I just find the humor in the stereotypes, don’t get offended and joke about it. So yes maybe I am carrying on racism, opression to women…Guess that’s when I’m being bad.
Yeah. Actually. Nothing means anything.
I mean, if I call these people “bunch of whitey idiots who can’t grasp the concept of power besides the one Obama has as a president” I’m just saying the words, ” whitey idiots who can’t grasp the power of power besides Obama has a president.
Those are just words. Which are constructed by letters. Which are just symbols. You know, “whitey” for me, means “an enlightened person”. “Idiot” Means “someone who eats too much”. “grasp the concept of power” means “I’m going to draw a stick man”. “Besides the one Obama has as a president”? “That man over there is looking at me creepily.”
It’s a bunch of nonsense! What? Does that sentence mean something different for you? It’s your past and your context and I really don’t care. Seriously. To me, it means nothing. So you should all shut up.
What?!?
Practice what you preach. I’m white, and I’m not going to apologize for it. There wasn’t some sign up sheet and I picked my race. I recognize the atrocities of white men who took African men as slaves, but I never took anyone as a slave and I never will. The notion that all white people are privileged…IS RACIST! Hey, I voted for Barack Obama, why, because he’s black? No, because he was the candidate I thought would bring the most change and not let our government fall back into the same old mistakes. I have black friends. I have white friends. I have Mexican friends. I have Asian friends (sorry but Utah isn’t too diverse,) I know you won’t read this post, and even if you do, you’ll call me a ‘racist privileged whitey’ and that’s fine with me. I know I”M not racist. I don’t judge people by the color of their skin. We shouldn’t be color blind, we should recognize that EVERYBODY is different and that what makes the world GREAT! I usually don’t post on idiotic issues like this, but you are infuriating.
IAWTC.
uncanny.
Isn’t it.
Its racist wah wah wah. Grow a spine you PC thugs.
I Second that.
Lebron is such a racist for posing in a photo that compares himself and his pro-athlete talent to the massive size, strength, and indomitable force of a giant gorrilla. Clearly it portrays all black people as monkies.
How can anyone miss or not be offended by that sweeping generalization?
Because it’s not intended to be a sweeping generalization.
If anything, he is being compared t the Germans conquering Europe during WWI. Comparing him to a predominantly white country isn’t being racist what so ever.
The fact that a gorilla is used is because it’s a menacing animal with humanoid features that works for the original context of the poster. Had there been a lion instead of the ape, and he was dressed as a lion, no one would cry racism. But because people can’t get over the stereotype that whenever you see a black man and an ape in the same context someone is trying to tell the world that he/she (Annie Liebowitz in this case) thinks black people are monkeys, everything is misunderstood.
All she is trying to do is recreate an old poster and I sincerely doubt she had any intention of hinting that she believes black people and monkeys are the same.
Um, satire…
^correct
Lol @ Graeme
OMG PEOPLE!!! Can you PLEASE just LAUGH at YOURSELVES for ONCE in your MISERABLE lives!!!!!!
No wonder depression is rampant!
I have never seen a bigger bunch of hypersensitives in my LIFE!
GEEEEZZZ!!!!
Awww. Aren’t you so hyper-sensitive? I mean, why are you worried about other people’s “hypersensitivity”?
(I’m not going to shut up. I’m a troll. I’m here to ruin the fun of innocent and well-meaning white-people.)
RACIST!
You just compared yourself to a troll! are you saying all black people are trolls? How dare you!
Lisa Maybe YOU are the racist one. Hating on yourself…oh so sad.
well…..
You do fit the stereotype.
GEt a life and laugh a little bit. Take a laxative to “loosen up” a bit. You are all so freaking uptight.
Nice!
i don’t agree with the comments that vogue was racist for doing this; it’s obviously a reminder of the stereotypes we harbour, not a statement that those stereotypes are true. it’s good from time to time to face these things, and the extremely caricatured nature of this should surely alert you to it’s sarcastic nature.
honestly, don’t be so damn dense and take things on one basic level.
*sigh* Why does everything have to be about racism? Thinking everything is racist is kind of racist in a way.
You ALL missed the point……..
“WWTBT”
(what would Tom Brady think)?
Funny thing… Ya’ll were so busy arguing over whether it was racist that no one noticed how sexist it is.
Incidentally, my vote is no: roundaboutly comparing a large athletic man (who happens to be black) to King Kong is not inherently racist.
However, avoiding comparing a large athletic man to King Kong for the sole reason that the athlete is black and King Kong is an ape and 50 years ago we had some unflattering comparisons between black people and apes kind of is racist.
…except that it’s not saying a black man looks like an ape. It’s comparing a magazine cover’s layout to an old propaganda poster. Get some lives, people!
consisting of proteins and fat from milk, usually the milk of cows, buffalo, goats, or sheep. It is produced by coagulation of the milk protein casein. Typically, the milk is acidified and addition of the rennet causes coagulation. The solids are then separated and pressed into final form.[1] Some cheeses also contain molds, either on the outer rind or throughout.
Hundreds of types of cheese are produced. Their different styles, textures and flavors depend on the origin of the milk (including the animal’s diet), whether it has been pasteurized, butterfat content, the species of bacteria and mold, and the processing including the length of aging. Herbs, spices, or wood smoke may be used as flavoring agents. The yellow to red color of many cheeses is a result of adding annatto. Cheeses are eaten both on their own and cooked in various dishes; most cheeses melt when heated.
For a few cheeses, the milk is curdled by adding acids such as vinegar or lemon juice. Most cheeses are acidified to a lesser degree by bacteria, which turn milk sugars into lactic acid, then the addition of rennet completes the curdling. Vegetarian alternatives to rennet are available; most are produced by fermentation of the fungus Mucor miehei, but others have been extracted from various species of the Cynara thistle family.
Cheese has served as a hedge against famine[citation needed] and is a good travel food. It is valuable for its portability, long life, and high content of fat, protein, calcium, and phosphorus. Cheese is more compact and has a longer shelf life than the milk from which it is made. Cheesemakers near a dairy region may benefit from fresher, lower-priced milk, and lower shipping costs. The long storage life of cheese allows selling it when markets are more favorable.
The origin of the word cheese appears to be the Latin caseus,[2] from which the modern word casein is closely derived. The earliest source is probably from the proto-Indo-European root *kwat-, which means “to ferment, become sour”.
In the English language, the modern word cheese comes from chese (in Middle English) and cīese or cēse (in Old English). Similar words are shared by other West Germanic languages — West Frisian tsiis, Dutch kaas, German Käse, Old High German chāsi — all of which probably come from the reconstructed West-Germanic root *kasjus, which in turn is an early borrowing from Latin.
The Latin word caseus is also the source from which are derived the Spanish queso, Portuguese queijo, Malay/Indonesian Language keju (a borrowing from the Portuguese word queijo), Romanian caş and Italian cacio.
The Celtic root which gives the Irish cáis and the Welsh caws are also related.
When the Romans began to make hard cheeses for their legionaries’ supplies, a new word started to be used: formaticum, from caseus formatus, or “molded cheese” (as in “formed”, not “molded”). It is from this word that we get the French fromage, Italian formaggio, Catalan formatge, Breton fourmaj and Provençal furmo. Cheese itself is occasionally employed in a sense that means “molded” or “formed”. Head cheese uses the word in this sense.
Cheese is an ancient food whose origins predate recorded history. There is no conclusive evidence indicating where cheesemaking originated, either in Europe, Central Asia or the Middle East, but the practice had spread within Europe prior to Roman times and, according to Pliny the Elder, had become a sophisticated enterprise by the time the Roman Empire came into being.
Proposed dates for the origin of cheesemaking range from around 8000 BCE (when sheep were first domesticated) to around 3000 BCE. The first cheese may have been made by people in the Middle East or by nomadic Turkic tribes in Central Asia. Since animal skins and inflated internal organs have, since ancient times, provided storage vessels for a range of foodstuffs, it is probable that the process of cheese making was discovered accidentally by storing milk in a container made from the stomach of an animal, resulting in the milk being turned to curd and whey by the rennet from the stomach. There is a widely told legend about the discovery of cheese by an Arab trader who used this method of storing milk. The legend has many individual variations.[3][4]
Cheesemaking may also have begun independent of this by the pressing and salting of curdled milk in order to preserve it. Observation that the effect of making milk in an animal stomach gave more solid and better-textured curds, may have led to the deliberate addition of rennet.
The earliest archeological evidence of cheesemaking has been found in Egyptian tomb murals, dating to about 2000 BCE.[5] The earliest cheeses were likely to have been quite sour and salty, similar in texture to rustic cottage cheese or feta, a crumbly, flavorful Greek cheese.
Cheese produced in Europe, where climates are cooler than the Middle East, required less salt for preservation. With less salt and acidity, the cheese became a suitable environment for beneficial microbes and molds, giving aged cheeses their pronounced and interesting flavors.
Wow, I just learned ALOT about cheese…thanks.
Cheese is racist.
lawl
We should enlist to destroy lebron james. Go Celtics
um…..this is kinda racist? does anybody else see that at all?
Hahaha, thx for the contribution, claire.
I just wanted to add that I call people apes on a daily basis. 99% of them are white. So am I. Which goes to show that I really need to get my racism fixed. Equal opportunities!
Hey you big dumb ape. No no I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to the black guy behind you. Psst…come on people. READING WAY TO MUCH ONTO IT. You are the kind of people who put corn flakes up on ebay because they look like something. Stop trying to find things that arn’t really there.
You guys all sound so “smart” and “educated” how can I become pompous like you?
Did you read the cheese article? I’m now a level 4 racist pompous privileged cheese expert. Unfortunately I spent all my points in dexterity…again..
Just ask Lisa where she got her Thesaurus. If shes not too busy eating babies, she’ll help you out.
LOL— ghetto lobster?
I think you all need to get lives, frankly.
But did anyone actually look at the picture? It is not a recreation of the original. Giselle is not a damsel in distress – she is happy to be on his arm. He is not trying to impose culture but basketball – it is meant to be a positive reworking of a racist image – it turns it on its head. It’s saying – things have changed.
The original poster wasn’t racist, either. As mentioned many times before, the giant gorilla was a symbol for fascist Germany.
I actually doubt the photographer had any message in mind when she chose to allude to the old poster. She probably just thought it was a cool old poster.
I completely agree with you Cat. This is meant to show a talented basketball player and a stunning model, smiling, being happy. this is a POSITIVE thing. I love that Vogue wasn’t too scared to do something that wasn’t PC. At the end of the day, it has caused a lot of controversy, but would a high-fashion magazine want a boring, ordinary front cover that no-one would be interested in? No. I personally like it.
You know, technically it’s the Germans who should be pissed about this, so everybody else is just a poser.
It seems more racist when the two images are put side by side. The intentions of whoever put this up are pretty obvious–to make us think “racism” because he was, too. That’s not to say that he or I or anyone else here is racist. I’m white and slightly offended. However, I don’t think that we should refrain from pointing out fine points like this. Makes us more aware in the long run of our behavior and the ways we think.
Funny Comments.
The resemblance is just too much
its not fair at all.
Of course everyone’s going to think this is racist…
No point in getting upset over it though, the original magazine cover already got a lot of bad press for supposedly having racist undertones. Why waste time being offended by it AGAIN?
Honestly, though, they do look alike.
I completely agree with you. Why turn something that was not intended to be racist into something racist? That just stirs crap up! Just face it. The intenentions of this comparison were to be funny, NOT racist. So quit trying to stir crap up.
LOOOOL, that’s horrible.
Hey, idiots: Ape = black fur Black people = black skin. It wouldn’t make any sense if it was a white guy there, because of the two opposite colors on the propoganda and the magazine.
If people want to see this as racist, that’s just them trying to feel good about themselves, convincing themselves that they would never be like that.
Whatever. I choose to interpret this as DaB said above – the cover is comparing Lebron to the “massive size, strength, and indomitable force of a giant gorilla.” As Lisa said before (although they were trolling), it’s how you interpret it. (Although that whole example of interpreting words to mean something completely different just to make a point is fairly idiotic…)
Although I do find it hilarious that Lisa keeps calling everyone “whiteys.”
Dumbass.
I think it would of still worked for a white guy to be in the poster. Why not…how about a guy from the UFC, would that not work and get its point across aswell. I think so.
K what if the guy was white and the girl was black…Lisa please let me know who that is (I’m sure in your mind) ALSO racist?
Mkaes sense; a black man desiring a white woman like some raging gorilla.
Makes sense; a black man desiring a white woman like some raging gorilla.
White men can be gorillas too you racist moron…
I lol’d. Yeah its racist, thats what makes it funny. So what, get over it e-thugs
im guessing they gave him a big banana too
Way to compare a black guy to a gorilla. Nice going. (This is sarcasm if you can’t tell.)
I hate everyone who complains about this being racist.
Take a chill pill.
OMG This is sooooo sexist. Like suggesting that a women is weak and can be eaily taken and held against her will! How dare they!!
Oh help me I’m just a girl and get get away.
Racist my ass. Look at the real issue…SEXIST.
Oh Dear Lord how dare they put anything on a magazine cover that I might get offended by and read to much into. How-Dare-they.
Calm down, people! They did it on purpose to sell more magazines.
Racist. Brute – c’mon.
you think the photographer had seen this propaganda and did it on purpose knowing LeBron James is a complete idiot and would never get the reference!? XD
Horny negro= raging gorilla. What’s new.
Nothing,
Nothing has changed over the years, well except newer ways to force it on YT.
This is a great comparison
RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you guys really have a problem with this, complain to the site.
They have some kind of magic committee that chooses which ones make it on the site. I’ve submitted about 8 over the last year, 5 of which were pretty damn good, and none have made it on the site. Its bullsh*t.
funny but….yeah racist.
maybe vogue meant to make it look that way… idk…the color and cut of the dresses are way to similar to be coincidence…
All this talk of racism.
How can a picture strike a chord like that, only you see this as racist if you do.
I am sick of hypocrisy and ethnic groups thinking the world is against you.
Australian Indigenous people whine about an problem.. but wait it was 40,000 years ago.
well then its so important.
This is just people looking for a reason to have an edge over others.
get over it.
Also it is supposed to portray beuty and the beast
the second picture was not posted by vogue was it.
Relax. It’s only “racist” because everyone’s quick to be politically correct and point out that everyone is racist. I find it amusing, and actually NOT racist. It is a COINCIDENCE that the pictures are similar. Everyone stop having a cow.
Hm…
It’s funny, since I’ve seen the propaganda poster before in History class during high school.
It’s only because they had gotten a black athlete (who *gasps* has the right physique to portray a hulking brute WITHOUT the use of make-up) to be in the shoot (with a Brazilian woman in his arms, so the whole ‘white woman’ logic goes down the whatsit-hole) that some people portray it as racist. Do I? In a sense, no (I’m Mexican by the way, so no one can say I’m a privileged whitey).
Since Mr. James (LeBron as some people call him) agreed to the shoot, it was all in good-humoured fun. Now, some people may call me racist for defending such a quote-unquote blatantly racist depiction. Well, I’m not defending it. I’m just saying that I thought it was funny (partly because I enjoy WWI and WWII-era propaganda posters). If posters like Lisa (by the way, who’s posts were all thought out and well-written) are going to say that I’m racist for having a small chuckle at this comparison, they may. I cannot stop them, since this is the Internet. And remember kids, nothing you say about in an online argument matters because chances are, the other people will just call you a n00b and flame your comments.
Sorry for digressing. I was just tired of columns and columns of pointless bickering over racism and ‘whiteys’ and ‘German WWII Ape Infantry’.
To summarize, I thought this comparison was funny… but I don’t think it is overtly racist. Or sexist for that matter. It’s all in good fun. If Lisa or any other person feels like calling me out on this, I would gladly enjoy a polite engaged intelligent conversation about the matter (something you rarely see nowadays).
^Bibliomanzer ends it. That sums it all up.
Its over, Johnny, ITS OVER!
this is definitely racist. those that don’t find it so need a reality check.
MD, you’re in the minority here.
In the minorty but in the right
Think again. ^_^ Look around.
its not racist. just because hes black doesnt mean that they chose him because of it. stop pretending like everyone’s out to get you
I think it was suppose to idiot
People who see humans as one color or another are racist. If you see a black man and a white woman on the cover of that magazine, you’re dividing amongst human beings. They are both people, and if you anti-racism people here would stop being racist, you’d see no racism, because you’d only see two PEOPLE making a modern parody of a ridiculous piece of propaganda. As long as you see people as colors, you will be racist.
Yet more stupid OH NOEZ RACIST! Comments, its been done on purpose it doesn’t matter its a fucking poster.
Ok…as a a sports fan….I don’t see anything wrong with it. Lol Lebron plays like a beast dammit! Haven’t you all seen any sports player do some beastly growl or roar after making a great play?
Lebron’s a smart guy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was even told to act like King Kong.
Wasn’t GWB compared to a chimp all the time? I think, as a society, we’ve grown past the monkey/black guy comparisons.
Now it’s just monkey/dumb person comparisons.
Negro has a basketball, gorilla has a club. Close enough I guess.
totally intentional, It is obvious the cover photo is referencing this old propaganda poster. They must have done some digging around to find it.
It cannot be a coincidence to have the girl with the exact same dress with a black dude making the exact same expression. The way they brought out the expression and all works very well. Props to whoever noticed the reference and put this online.
Well, it is common thought that the Negro man is closest to the apes when it comes to development and sophistication so it does make sense that the posters depict reality to some extent. Whether they’re playing basketball here or sitting in straw huts in the Congo, the Negro man will always be at the bottom of the totem pole on the ladder of life. The only good news for them is that they lack the mental capacity to realize it.
I read that a few times, and I finally just came to HOPE that was a joke of some sort…
And if not, go fuck yourself.
But anyways, on another topic, the hypocricy of society is sickening, if I as a white person were to say something minutely offensive to a person of another race it would be rascism, but nobody else, whether they be black/asian or whoever, are called rascists when they bash whites? News flash: hating and insulting WHITE people because other WHITE people in the past enslaved blacks IS racism, you are using a predisposition or steriotype to generalize or demean the whites, so that in itself is being rascist. And just because some hillbilly cop in Iowa decides to beat of some innocent black guy does not mean that every white is rascist.
holy fuck, what an ugly thing to say. scary too.
Uh…this definitely made me screw my face up.
If you dont understand the racist tone, then….I dont even know what you need to do.
Alarm bells should definitely be going off in your head.
People dont think this it offensive for NO reason, people.
Of course its racist; that Brazilian female ingénue is white. Oh, how horribly discriminatory.
The ape is large, powerful, and dark in color. LeBron is large, powerful, and dark in color. If you want to re-create old artwork with photography and maintain the original color schemes, you might as well work with what you got.
It’s a large, dark, humanoid animal grasping a white woman. This limits your model options to three things:
a.) A large white man spray-painted black grasping a white woman (talk about awkward and uncomfortable!)
b.) A man in a gorilla suit grasping a white woman (not very subtle or artistic)
c.) A large, dark-skinned man grasping a white woman
Golly gee, I think we have a winner!
Face it, it’s a good photograph and is a very clever play on the original picture. It wouldn’t have been nearly as effective if the model playing Kong were white because, for f***’s sake, Kong was not an albino ape. A real shocker, I know.
Take Al Sharpton’s dick out of your mouth for just a moment and think about what you’re saying. Nobody said a word about how the image was comparing blacks to apes or monkeys or martians or whatever except you. You came up with that idea in your own paranoid mind, while everyone else was just enjoying some fun art. Relax- the world isn’t out to get you.
I see no difference- except the one on the old poster, on the right, has more fur.
wow. just… wow. i do wonder if LeBron and Giselle knew what the obvious “inspiration” for this shoot was. think about it, how many of us had seen that WW2 poster previous to this?
Yet…another…F A I L
America=win. People who don’t appreciate all we try to do=fail. Scary black man=Win. We elected a 1/2 black guy to the presidency for god sakes what more do people want because my grandpa’s grandpa’s dad owned slaves? It’s not my fault, the first time I force someone to work for ME for FREE, I’ll apologize for it, ok?
holy hell get over it. black people make fun of white people
white people make fun of black people
sure in the past whites enslaved blacks blah blah blah
but you know a white person will go down in the “hood”
and they are in trouble for just being there and white
i mean really this is a back and forth thing.
you can’t blame only white people for racism
everyone takes their part whether you realize it or not.
so really just get over it
it’s another not so perfect fact of life.
oh and about the US invading and all that bullshit
you know the US has helped a lot of places in the past
we are always on the side of right and freedom
so what if we don’t help so perfectly
neither do many other countries
it can’t all go according to plan
and only have good come out of it all the time.
nobody shits rainbows.
goodness.
MAN IM HUNGERY FOR MAC AND CHEESE RIGHT NOW.IRL…
O YA AND YR RACIST!!!!
Can someone explain how this is racist? Preferably someone who isn’t black or white?
I’m Mexican, so I will.
People find this ‘racist’ because of old stereotypes portraying African-Americans as ape-like and primitive. So a lot of people see this as either subtle racism or just all-out stereotyping.
You’re all stupid. You automatically think it’s racist cause it compares a black man to a gorilla. Shut up already the picture does look similar. Stop being so sensative. God everything is racist nowadays. You guys are racist for thinking it’s racist cause obviously you think the black man looks like a gorilla and that’s why you are turning around saying it’s racist. If you think this is racist you’re racist.
