  2. Hello, computer says:

And, the same person also did their voices. . . . . both Disney movies. . . . This one is a fail.

    • KC says:

Yes, Phil Harris did both voices:

      http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0365201/

      • moonbaby says:

No, No, people, see — Baloo PLAYED Little John. Yeah, that’s it. Disney always rags on themselves about using the same actors over and over. Remember at the end of Cars, when John Ratzenburger called ‘em out for using his own voice in their “Mickey Mouse Operation” ?! You can find remnants of other movies in almost every Disney picture. They do it on purpose. It’s supposed to be like a hidden picture game, to see if anyone will notice.

        • Zoreta says:

Yeah, like in Finding Nemo, there are toys on the floor of the Dentist’s Office, and one of them is a Buzz Lightyear action figure. One of the cars that drives by the window is a ‘pizza planet’ mobile.

They are EVERYWHERE, and most of it is intended.

    • MsMsBurning says:

Agreed! So Disney movies of that era A.) Sucked! B.) Recycled.

  3. wallawalla says:

    same animators.
the animation will look simialr when done by the same animation company.
just look at any old disney movies or family guy versus american dad. very alike lol

  4. Pro says:

    Obvious fail is obvious.

  5. tehRika says:

Nice to see that the Department of Obvious makes lulz too.

    • jjmblue7 says:

As head of the Department of Obvious, I would like to accept this compliment, while eschewing any negative publicity. ;)

  6. A_nonee_mouse says:

    Well duh!

They were played by the same bear. :p

  7. Nautique says:

Well, they’ve just copied the whole animation scheme from whichever character came first and re-used it.

No wonder they look the same, in certain scenes they behave exactly the same too.

  8. Jam-master P says:

    No fu(cking sh!t, really?

    A@@wipe.

  9. Setral says:

It was common practice for any animation studio to reuse cells and drawings, to cut costs. Check out any older cartoon movies or shows, you’ll see that a lot.

  10. SJ says:

Actually Disney cut and paste big parts in movies, not just characters, but scenes! check it out on youtube, there’s a video showing it. It’s EXACT!

    • scott says:

Have a link to it? I would go search it myself, but being a 3rd shifter, im going to bed just about now.

  11. klugenbeel says:

Seriously, this dawned on me when i was 8 and watched Disney movies. Same actor did the voice for both characters. Come on, this is way old news, and i fail to see how this made it on the front page…there are a lot better Totatlly Looks Likes

  12. Chadwick says:

Since baloo and this other bear from robin hood are obvious, I’d like to see who the other characters from the robin hood movie were meant to resemble.

    • chernygrrrl says:

They used some of the same cells and sequences betwen jungle book, robinhood, and snow white. Besides the basics (clothing, color, and occasionally character ie. snow white and maid marion) the only other difference was the speed at which they played them.

      • The dance between Baloo & King Louie in Jungle Book is the same as the dance between Lil John and Lady Kluck.

It was a time when Disney was trying to reduce costs. You’ll notice that on the films of that era (Jungle, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, etc) the black lines of the characters all look ‘rough’; that’s because they were using a Xerox machine to directly transfer the pencil ‘cleans’ instead of sending them to the Ink department like they used to on films like Snow White.

Still, those are my favorite films of the Disney catalogue :)

  13. freakishneko says:

also: tail spin XP (more to the point: epic fail)

    http://www.talespinhq.com/Layout/talespin.jpg

    • Jasara says:

Ummm… Tailspin was Baloo… they just replaced Mowgli with a bear.

      • Hoopy Frood says:

Yea, Tailspin was a spinoff cartoon of Jungle Book. That was entirely intentional.

I knew that when it was still broadcasting, and I was just a kid.

  14. Mooh says:

    reusability anyone?

  15. Mindless2164 says:

They were running low on money when they made the Robin Hood movie, so they had to use the same animations over again, just slightly changed.

  16. Onion says:

So I guess you guys never saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihS970ymuC0

  17. Ashlyn says:

Why wouldn’t they reuse the cels over and over again. Back then all the Disney cartoons were hand drawn anyway. Can you imagine how much LONGER it would have taken for then to churn out movies?

    • Fishstick says:

Amen. Animation isn’t a quick process, and certainly wasn’t then.

Spoiled kids thinking that makes it suck.:P

  18. Blue says:

    Those look TOO similiar

  19. nixonagnew says:

Jesus Christ. Again? Really? Why do Disney movies make it to the main page so much? Ugh.

  20. Cisco54 says:

Didn’t you know? The Mighty Yensid owns everything! (or close to it)

  21. Kanto says:

    Same voice actor too.

  22. jain says:

Silly, it’s Baloo Playing the Part of Little John. Of course they’re the same.

  23. mermer says:

    omg racist!

  24. mermer says:

oh btw i did see some video somewhere where disney recycled old movies and reused dance sequences move-for-move. this one and the another from robin hood was also used in snow white, there was one from cinderella in beauty and the beast. lalala …

  25. Cara says:

They look the same because Robin Hood is actually a compilation of pieces from other Disney films- it was pretty low-budget, so not only do Little John and Baloo LOOK the same, the same man does the voice for them. And the dance scene in the jungle is the exact dance scene from some other Disney movie, just with different colors and music.

  26. Glowworm says:

    Different bear-same voice actor-Phil Harris. XD-ridiculous.

  27. Oscar says:

Would be better if he wasnt palgerizing off of someone’s youtube video
    User: kickedinthenuts105
    Video: Disney’s Recycled Animation

  28. Ant says:

It’s obvious the same cartoon actor.

In the same way that Captain Archer from Enterprise totally looks like the time-traveler dude from Quantum Leap.

    • wheeeeedoggie says:

      Hello! Thank you!

In the same way the Sorcerer’s Apprentice totally looks like Mickey! Duh.

  29. Captian Obvoius says:

That is because they are the same caracter. Disney has a way of recycling caracyers into different roles.

  30. DiabloNeonX says:

Both of those movies came from the era of hand drawn animation. Disney was notorious for recycling animation in those days in order to speed up production time and to keep costs down.

Of course they look alike. They’re the exact same frames of animation.

  31. ascatal says:

Fail at the place that you work , fail at home

  32. momcat1958 says:

Of course the characters look alike…same actor! That’s like saying Indiana Jones totally looks like Han Solo.

  33. Gustav says:

This is like complaining that the characters in The Muppet’s Treasure Island were ripped off of characters from the The Muppet Show.

  34. drake1 says:

Baloo’s rainforest was clear cut to make room for the cattle, so he had hook up with the guys in Sherwood forest…..
fyi, mumra, golobulus (from gi joe the movie) and the bad guy from Silverhawks all had the same voice.

  35. M says:

Alladin and the prince from the little mermaid are almost identical as well

    its a disney thing

  36. Michelle says:

DUH!! Major fail. Someone get me three bags of originality stat! This one needs a transfusion.

  37. Hein says:

Hey! Stop giving this guy grief! Sheesh. The pics are almost identical, so this was a goo dcatach by him/her. Get over the crappy smarter-than-thou attitude.

  38. Co says:

disney did that kinda often if u look back at some of the old movies that just had random woodland creatures.. they also used the same voices (ie little john and baloo) … so this is really nothing new.. or unnoticed

  39. Caghs says:

I wish I got a dollar for every person that pointed out the cost-cutting of Disney, or the fact that the same cels were used. I could buy my dinner tonight at no expense ;)

    • Caghs says:

As in, “reading previous comments before commenting on the thread FAIL”

(I would have worded that better if I’d slept in the past two days)

    • M says:

I think they do that for more than just cutting costs.

I remember seeing a documentary about disney and this artist there explained that there is a guideline for drawing certain kinds of characters. To make them instantly recognizable as disney figures.

Bad guys always have a sort of pointy face, where as the prince always has a big chin

      • Caghs says:

I think you’ve missed my point … it’s not the ‘why’ of why they do it, but the fact that every second or third comment in this thread is saying the same thing ;)

  40. Tyler Birt says:

to save money the companies would draw one scene and edit it later for different movies. cheap assholoes.

  41. Kelly says:

no surprise there. i´ve thought about that myself. i´ve also noticed that some times they will use the exact same shots in different movies but i guess they change the animation just a little bit to get away with it. like in the aristocrats there is a scene where duchess is dancing on her hind legs and in robin hood maid marian does the same dance… totally identical. makes me think they got lazy and decided to recycle old material.

  42. bluenowait says:

To be fair, Robin Hood was made after Walt died, I mean froze.

  43. Disser says:

Holy frik, can’t you guys get a life? Disney is a great company and so what if two characters happen to look a like…. we’re not gonna die :P

  44. Bill G. says:

    Ironic, ain’t it?

  45. The snake in Jungle Book was Sterling “Winnie the Pooh” Holloway and the snake in Robin Hood was Terry Thomas

  46. theruffs says:

This wasn’t exactly intentional… Robin Hood was a very low budget film, so to cut costs they basically traced over frames from old Disney films and used Baloo for Little John. At one point, Little John does a dance identical to one Baloo does because it was the same dance that they traced.

This saved a lot of money because they didn’t have to film live-action reference footage.

    • Frank Nelson says:

Seriously? You cats have got to realize that the character of Baloo was literally a cartoonization of the legendary Phil Harris, voice, character and all. There is a reason both bears are the same. Do some homework prior to posting. ;-)

      • Dalooba says:

Disney traces over scenes all the time. There are tons of videos on youtube that do side by side comparisons of loads of scenes. It’s nothing to do with Baloo and Little John being played by the same voice actor; it’s Disney being tight and saving money. They’re not just drawn the same, they’re literally traced over the old cells, with added hats and clothes.

  47. glemlin says:

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the fact just about all of the characters were also in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. As much as it was cost cutting, I think Disney at the time was trying to make ‘cartoon actors’.

  48. Francisco says:

    Cheap bastards!!!!

  49. blah says:

Dude, I’m pretty sure they had the same voice actors too.

  50. Sarah says:

Yeah, that’s because they used the same animation to save money.

  51. peter says:

its not a look alike , its the same draw they used

  52. Lisa says:

They’re not cheap bastards, throughout most of Disney’s history they were not making much money at all for themselves because they were cycling all of their earnings back into the business.

And apparently nobody on here has ever heard of the word homage.

Robin Hood in particular is an homage to a lot of things. It was made just after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and shows a lot of parallels to the storyline and characters. Robin Hood is the ultimate antihero and the Middle Ages in France and England WAS the “Wild West” of it’s day.

And of course they recycle their footage. It’s cheaper and it’s a great way to honor the art and artists of the past.

  53. adrianneee says:

they also have the same snake! i don’t think it’s a coincidence.

  54. Steffen says:

    perheps a budget cut?

Amazing Act From Callum Francis- The Jungle Book – Big Thanks To BritainsSoTalented

Callum Francis in his semi-final appearance on Britain’s Got Talent 2009. Thursday 28 May 2009

  56. Anon says:

everyone knows disney use the same frames for movies but change things like the clothes and backgrounds

  57. Xodoz says:

You know if you look at a lot of the old Disney cartoons they reused cells like that and just altered the picture a little.

  58. Lizbeth says:

well other actors get work in different films, don’t they?

  59. Sarah Mann says:

    They’re suppose to!

  60. Axel says:

    FAIL SAME PERSON

  61. OldSkooRebel says:

Here’s a YouTube video explaining these strange Disney to Disney similarities. Its scary.

  62. brooke says:

disney only has so many ways to draw a bear apparently.

  63. BOUNTYHUNTER says:

Baloo is from Jungle Book and Little John is from Robin Hood.

  64. batz says:

Disney reused a lot of characters and a lot of the character scenes are the same. In the old days they did it to reduce man hours and it was much quicker to reuse… movies got out faster. The dance scenes are the same in the jungle book and robin hood…. cinderella has the same dance scenes as beauty and the beast….ect…ect..

  65. t says:

Disney “recycled” alot of clips from their movies to simplify the animation process.

  66. General says:

Mmm, if some of you like the character, people should take a look at this Baloo character page from Talespin. (remember the show?)

  67. I hate you says:

you guys are all repetitive morons. Please read before posting as you all say the same thing

    • EvilGuy says:

why the hell would anyone read past the first 20 posts and bfore the last 5 posts?
      its called time wasting

Besides their preacticaly the same characters

  68. Maid Marion Morrisson says:

OMG!!! The Robin Hood Cartoon movie was the movie I made my parents play over and over again when I was a little kid. Still love that movie.
