Not entirely mysterious why they look the same. Matt Groenig certainly was going for a retro look with Bender, and may actually have seen that comic cover. Probably saw it.

As for the menaced heroin image… What exactly is the robot going to do with her? He plainly lacks the appropriate equipment, or even a socket with which to attach it.
