or use it as a REFERENCE rather than a direct rip-off. I use references all the time (for lighting or pose or whatever) but never just paint the reference picture and claim it as my own.

Using a reference is common, so I see it more as: you can use a reference photo for your painting, but don’t use one everyone knows.
