That is a scar. It was to make sure that he had a “manly” image and to distinguish him from Ken and the Barbie dolls of that era. Also notice that in the early 70’s GI Joe was an action man and adventurer, not a soldier.

I used to think that Billy Mays was kind of bleh. But after seeing him on Pitchmen on the Discovery Channel, I love this guy. He was hilarious on that show and seemed to be a really great guy to boot. He was a master at his job and will be missed. RIP Billy Mays.

The scar is what makes it an authentic GI Joe. Since you can’t copyright “a male soldier action figure/doll”, Mattel gave him a scar and copyrighted that facial feature. Any other toymaker who created a doll with a similar scar could be sued by Mattel.

As for Billy Mays, I loved his last commercial: the one where he is getting other people to yell and scream about his wonderful products. It was hilarious. I hope they don’t stop running it just because he died.
My best memory of Billy Mays, if I may: Shortly after his debut as OxyClean’s pitchman, we saw the product on the top shelf at WalMart. My 8-yr-old daughter had seen the infomercial and knew all about The Marvelous OxyClean. She couldn’t reach it so I got it down for her. She started the pitch, just to me, as people came through the aisle. She sold SEVEN jars of OxyClean that day! …to people who probably wouldn’t even have looked on the top shelf otherwise. His voice may have been loud and sometimes annoying, but he made a definite impression on a little girl and got the job done for the company!

I’m certainly not one to shed a tear over a celebrities death (aka MJ), but I was very saddened to hear of Billy’s death. I also saw him on Pitchmen and he seemed like a helluva good guy. RIP Billy. You will be missed.
