I hate to correct you there the sickle and hammer (as in field and factory workers) was a symbol of the soviets not of Communism, if anything the symbol of Communism would be the red flag or the red star… and this all does not even remotely touch upon the question as to whether the former Soviet Union has anything to do with Communism as it was outlined by Marx and Engels or even the interpretation thereof by people such Lenin or Trotsky…

Soviet Russia was never “under communism”. Communism could only occur after the State had withered away. Soviet Russia was only even socialist until the Red vs White Civil war and WWI continued to pound Russia’s door. Once the attacks begin, the first promise of Lenin, which was peace, was made impossible, and the country became a dictatorship of the Soviet. Not that wasn’t so bad when Lenin was alive, but it was Stalin that pulled off the terrors. Either way…. there was -never- communism in Russia. Ever.
