but the tanks are different
EVEN IF YOU ARE JOKING, YOU ARE DUMB.
Erm, how is this dumb? I mean really, it’s ‘totallylookslike.com. And whether or not it was on purpose, it they do totally look alike.
Even if you weren’t talking in caps, you’d be dumb as well.
This might be on purpose in order to invoke the idea from the origional. Like a guy on a motorcycle in a pose like Napoleon.
Seems like most people are in the same pose just dressed diffrently
Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
TLL usually has it the wrong way around…
thats coz of the “before and after” way we see things thats why they always make it like that.
This has been covered in comments on earlier TLLs. Logically, if A looks like B, then B looks like A, irrespective of which one is chronologically first.
This is totallylookslike.com, not totallywascopiedfrom.com where the order might actually matter. Nonetheless, putting it the “wrong” way around has a certain comedic effect.
Putting it the “wrong” way makes it less funny.
Only if you’re anal retentive.
Anal receptive? What’s that got to do with anything?
retentive dumbass not recpetive
Recpetive? If you can’t even spell it correctly, don’t go calling people a dumbass. Nobody likes a hypocrite.
its called a typo. Its probobly just a mistake so, you must be anal retentive.
anal incentive
anal preventive
Anal receptive = Receiving anally. itsame – have fun being anal receptive
That sounds wrong on SO many levels
Putting it the wrong way makes it feel funny.
That’s what she said.
While what you explained about its logic is true, the practice is usually to say that something is similar to whatever came either first or is larger. This is a universal psychological process.
As long as we’re talking “universal”, before one becomes familiar with both items, the more universal psychological process is to place the less familiar item first and the more familiar second.
“This [unknown] looks like that [known].”
So, placing the older item first plays on the fact that the newer item might be more familiar to some people.
I typed in “totallywascopiedfrom.com” to see if it was a real site and the only result I got was back to your post.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who does things like this.
what, take it in the butt?
I tried it, and I got your post. Cross-reference win.
http://www.totallywascopiedfrom.com/
Looks like it’s down right now.
I realize this has been covered before, but I thought I’d respond to say that the order does matter. There definitely is a difference too, in terms of whether the object is to be straightforward or to be funny. In terms of art, the most recent or perhaps “copied” piece “looks like” the piece of art that came before it. It is often funny to put it the other way around. In terms of people, if the people are contemporaries of each other (like Leonardo DiCaprio and Eric Dane), it makes most sense to say that the less famous Eric Dane “looks like” Leonardo DiCaprio. Not really funny to have it the other way around. If it is two people from different eras like Jack Black and Paul Revere, obviously the more recent Jack Black looks like the historic Paul Revere, and it might be funny to do it the other way. When it’s a coincidence, like the big sculpture that looks like a sewing machine, it’s funniest and best to say that the sculpture (not intended to look like a sewing machine) looks like a sewing machine.
In the end, totallylookslike.com can be whatever it wants to be and I don’t care. But the order does definitely matter in terms of whether they are going for comedic effect or not. Note that Failblog does not just put “FAIL” on everything, but rather some images “WIN” and the source of the “FAIL” is always carefully chosen. So here’s an example where more was considered in putting the post up.
Much too long, watchyou say?
Congratulations for having posted the only comment in this entire thread that is well thought out and pertinent….my own included. someone stamp a “WIN” on this one, and a “FAIL” on FistingChildhoodDreams for being unable to discern the meaning from more than 5 consecutive words.
Three cheers for Tom’s clarity! It’s dire that you have to explain both the meme and the phenomenology of comedy, but I, for one appreciate your patience.
Yes it should be, Werrf.
Again, it’s a ยซpasticheยป, not a look-alike.
GEEEZ what will it take?
A general raising of the IQ of the people who read TTL?
you mean “TLL”?
You’re a network admin, aren’t you?
So it’s true, the History really likes to repeat itself. I didn’t know it pays this much attention to the details though.
Funny!
It’s done it before…ancient Greek statuary was used to model images for Civil War era American art…showing a lineage between the artist (American) and a government that spawned ideals near and dear to the American spirit.
All agitation posters and pics look alike
Maybe, but this one is obviously a direct rip…
The Sherman is definetly greater than the abrams
no Sherman in the first picture
Looks like a T-34. Minsk was “liberated” by the Soviets.
and Bagdad was “”"liberated”"” by USA, too
WIN!
How is that a win
I also think it would be unlikely for a Russian propaganda painting to use a Sherman. Although it does look a lot like it, it’s true.
Well, the US won…
the US helped win. The Russians were the tank, the US were sort of like the healer/spellcaster.
what, no way thats totally a T-38
It could be a KV1-85. It looks a bit lower and squatter than a T34-85. Either way it’s an artist interpretation and not a direct representation.
Except that the Russians liberated Minsk, and probably weren’t using our Shermans. Although possible, as they had a few thousand from the Lend-Lease program, I doubt the Soviets would allow an American tank in their artwork of the period.
I know I am late to the party here, but this guy has it right.
The Russians did use large numbers of shermans (which they called Emchas) and were generally well received.
But the tank in that painting appears to really just be a sort of approximate representation of a Russian tank. The turret looks like an American Sherman, but the chassis looks more like an IS-2. The most likely contender in my opinion is the KV-85, but that doesn’t jive 100% either. My guess is that the painting was done much later, and the artist used an anachronistic Russian tank design (I am only familiar with the designs of WWII). This is done all the time (See any WWII movie of the 70s).
It’s apparent that the artist who painted “The Liberation of Baghdad” modeled it directly on “The Liberation of Minsk 1944″. Nearly everything, including the building in background at left, is close to identical. Th only changes are adding a mosque and a helicopter, and changing the clothing styles. Anyone believing this is mere coincidence has a problem with objective analysis. But there will be those who refute it anyway…
I don’t think anyone thinks it’s a coincidence. Well okay, I take that back…Nigerian scammers continue to manage to convince people, after all.
Refute what? The fact that you are Captain Obvious?
I agree. The only thing this “totally looks like” to me is a fail.
YOUR MOTHER FAILED BY LETTING YOU FALL OUT OF HER FAT ASS.
And your mother failed by not properly explaining to you where babies come from.
ROFL
im a wooly shambler!!!!!!!!
YOUR MOTHER FAILED BY LETTING YOU FALL OUT OF HER PIG FAT DIRTY ASS TOO.
You have failed once again by failing to read the above comment by BBB that won by informing you that your mother failed by failing to win by properly explaining to you where babies come from, approximately 9 months or so after THE BIG WIN is made.
And yes… I am in fact guilty of creating about 60% of all of the content on failblog…
I’ll eat your babies.
I’ll have seconds..
I tend to agree with you. Someone is trying to make a connection for propaganda purposes.
By the way, nicely done to the person who matched these two up!
lol take after each other indeed
Un. Be. Lievable.
I dunno, but I can’t shake the feeling that the Liberation of Baghdad was created by a GOP propagandist. You know, the same ones who lied their way into the war in the first place.
Much props to whomever came up with this.
It’s satire of GOP propogandists.
I certainly hope they look alike. I mean, they’re supposed to.
In before inevitable Minsc & Boo comment.
Also, go for the eyes Boo! RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHH!!!
“Squeaky wheel get’s the kick!”
That’s a pretty funny stuff. And I’ve just found out the painter’s name of that Baghdad Liberation masterpiece: it’s a surprisingly honorable Californian painter Sandow Birk. Using similar older canvases is a very common thing about him and seems to be the way to critisize the reality. It’s not a bad way but I don’t think I like it.
Shows you how easy it is to become an artist, just copy someone else his/her work, make some minor changes, and pawn it off as a parody. No thinking required, no creativity required, just the ignorance of the audience admiring it. Minimum effort maximum yield, come to think of it why am I not doing this???
Hehe… That’s it. But before you have to make yourself a name to convince the ignorant audience that your re-colored copy is a masterpiece. And add some knowledge of the subject because all the details must look natural. Now go buy paints, brushes and a beret. Eww…
Sure, ask P-diddly or whatever he goes by nowadays.
Looks like artist rendered it off a t34 or IS1 but russian’s did use shermans.
Supposedly “He takes these 15th-18th century masterpieces, and recasts them in modern yet powerful themes.”
But in my google searching, it looks like 95% of the time the fact that these are derivative and not original works is not mentioned.
Fair enough. But it does not appear that he is trying to misrepresent his work – even if others don’t always include an attribution. But knowing this does make the TLL less funny. No GOTCHA anymore.
Re-read the quote you quoted.
That’s where it’s mentioned.
That’s kinda the point… hence the similar name and basically the EXACT SAME POSITIONS. DUH
looks like fail
It’s very obviously an appropriation. I hate lookalikes like this one.
did they ever liberate baghdad??
Technically, yes.
Define “technically”. Was there any foreign occupation before the 2003 war? Isn’t there one, since then to the present day (at least in the iraqi point of view)?
i still see war around and on that area so yea โโ’
Saddam is still alive, don’t believe the interweb videos!!!
Should intentional homages even be eligible for this?
i thought intentional TTL’s were not done?
You must be new here.
Too much of a coincidence. Someone must have run out of propoganda ideas.
NO. THIS IS PROPAGANDA AT ITS PROPAGANDIC BEST.
Yes Mikey..point well taken
Looks like the artist was using the old painting as a reference and took the composition from it. LOL, AMERICAN propaganda.
The difference I see – Soviets freed Russian people from Nazi, Americans freed Iraqis from oil.
IT’S …THE…OTHER WAY… AROUND AHHHHHH
I quit this site!
This style of painting goes way back in Soviet Russia. So the artist is more likly to be trained in the Russian style of using previous works. But the artist could have been a TAD more original.
Ironic Message(tm) seems to be “Oppressive Americans defeating Oppressive Saddam is like Oppressive Soviets defeating Oppressive Nazis”.
Bleah, going along with the current political fashions is hardly anything new for artists. I’d be more impressed with some creativity.
So, the American troops barged into Iraq and stole all their oil, right? How come all these foreign countries have oil contracts with Iraq now and the U.S. does not?
The world is much more complex than your GOP or DNC worldviews, you peons.
Photoshopped!
Somebody had to say it.
plus its racist.
its the bagdad that looks like minsk ;d
do not mistake history of art with your propaganda!
minsk was first and you copied it!
…This is intentional. The Liberation of Bagdhad is a satirical piece, referencing the Liberation of Minsk.
The real irony of the satire is that the people most often fooled by it are the ones who believe it’s actually pro-war propoganda. Essentially it becomes anti-pro-war propoganda.
It’s actually an homage, as many of Birk’s paintings and drawings are. To quote from an article: “These may be contemporary works, but they draw uninhibitedly from the past. Birk is a skilled draftsman and has the ability to adapt the styles as well as the subject matter from artists he admires–Gustave Dore, Honore Daumier, Frederick Church, and George Bellows. But he transforms their visions while rendering his own distinct commentary on contemporary culture.”
So, it’s supposed to look that way. It is not a rip off, and not a parody. and most people with even a passing knowledge of art will recognize that.
Obviously, the artist, Sandow Birk, often uses older works of art and adds a modern perspective to them…

It’s art! Of course it’s supposed to look like it.
Who needs to be creative, when you can face phuk the original! Honestly, you can do this… But blatant plagiarism gets me kicked out of collage!?
This is a double standard good sir, a double standard!!
IT IS SUPPOSED TO!!!!! DUH. YOU ARE A DOLT!!!
Uhm. It’s supposed to look alike. And as for the retard who pointed out that the tanks are different, the tools of war do tend to differ when there are sixty years separating then. Freaking moron.
Stop being so disrespectful- that’s just a stupid move. Shut up about “retarded.” And, obviously, it’s a replica with certain details changed. You agree with the person who said that the tank had changed, so what’s your issue?
yea, some people might take offense to u using the “R” word, like the “itsame” guy towards the top of the thread-comments_go_here-thingy…
I wondur haow meny douhcebags I colud git tou repliy tuo mie coment jusst forr spleling evryething worng, ecxetp “I” fo coures…. becuzz ihtt shurr seams liek uh lott uv poeple du iht fourr noh gud danm reezin

coincidence? I think not!
Definitely is the exact same picture. Lazy bastards.
I totally agree. We all see that there is a child in front of the T-34/72.We can see the same in the next picture. Can’t they figure out another scene!?!
You’re right stalker, its just a different colour.
it like the wwII marines raising the flag pic and the firmen on sept 11 raising the flag over the rubble
Congratulations, you just had TWINS
SAME FREAKING RUNNING KID. :0
in art circles this is called an homage. In stupid people circles this is called “OMG coincidence!!!”
