    but the tanks are different

  2. Fragen says:

Seems like most people are in the same pose just dressed diffrently

  3. Werrf says:

Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

    • Nuglet says:

TLL usually has it the wrong way around…

    • domorvedar says:

This has been covered in comments on earlier TLLs. Logically, if A looks like B, then B looks like A, irrespective of which one is chronologically first.

This is totallylookslike.com, not totallywascopiedfrom.com where the order might actually matter. Nonetheless, putting it the “wrong” way around has a certain comedic effect.

      • gir says:

Putting it the “wrong” way makes it less funny.

      • al says:

While what you explained about its logic is true, the practice is usually to say that something is similar to whatever came either first or is larger. This is a universal psychological process.

        • domorvedar says:

As long as we’re talking “universal”, before one becomes familiar with both items, the more universal psychological process is to place the less familiar item first and the more familiar second.

“This [unknown] looks like that [known].”

So, placing the older item first plays on the fact that the newer item might be more familiar to some people.

      • squeehunter says:

I typed in “totallywascopiedfrom.com” to see if it was a real site and the only result I got was back to your post.

      • phantom says:

        http://www.totallywascopiedfrom.com/

Looks like it’s down right now.

      • Tom says:

I realize this has been covered before, but I thought I’d respond to say that the order does matter. There definitely is a difference too, in terms of whether the object is to be straightforward or to be funny. In terms of art, the most recent or perhaps “copied” piece “looks like” the piece of art that came before it. It is often funny to put it the other way around. In terms of people, if the people are contemporaries of each other (like Leonardo DiCaprio and Eric Dane), it makes most sense to say that the less famous Eric Dane “looks like” Leonardo DiCaprio. Not really funny to have it the other way around. If it is two people from different eras like Jack Black and Paul Revere, obviously the more recent Jack Black looks like the historic Paul Revere, and it might be funny to do it the other way. When it’s a coincidence, like the big sculpture that looks like a sewing machine, it’s funniest and best to say that the sculpture (not intended to look like a sewing machine) looks like a sewing machine.

In the end, totallylookslike.com can be whatever it wants to be and I don’t care. But the order does definitely matter in terms of whether they are going for comedic effect or not. Note that Failblog does not just put “FAIL” on everything, but rather some images “WIN” and the source of the “FAIL” is always carefully chosen. So here’s an example where more was considered in putting the post up.

        • FistingChildhoodDreams says:

          Much too long, watchyou say?

        • Some Dude says:

Congratulations for having posted the only comment in this entire thread that is well thought out and pertinent….my own included. someone stamp a “WIN” on this one, and a “FAIL” on FistingChildhoodDreams for being unable to discern the meaning from more than 5 consecutive words.

        • vanillaicecream says:

Three cheers for Tom’s clarity! It’s dire that you have to explain both the meme and the phenomenology of comedy, but I, for one appreciate your patience.

  4. hugo says:

    Yes it should be, Werrf.
    Again, it’s a ยซpasticheยป, not a look-alike.

    GEEEZ what will it take?

  5. goldencalf says:

So it’s true, the History really likes to repeat itself. I didn’t know it pays this much attention to the details though.

    • Spy D says:

      Funny!

    • Art_Frane says:

It’s done it before…ancient Greek statuary was used to model images for Civil War era American art…showing a lineage between the artist (American) and a government that spawned ideals near and dear to the American spirit.

  6. mister chappy says:

All agitation posters and pics look alike

  7. aaron says:

The Sherman is definetly greater than the abrams

    • Sal says:

no Sherman in the first picture

    • Outback Jon says:

Except that the Russians liberated Minsk, and probably weren’t using our Shermans. Although possible, as they had a few thousand from the Lend-Lease program, I doubt the Soviets would allow an American tank in their artwork of the period.

      • Steven says:

I know I am late to the party here, but this guy has it right.

The Russians did use large numbers of shermans (which they called Emchas) and were generally well received.

But the tank in that painting appears to really just be a sort of approximate representation of a Russian tank. The turret looks like an American Sherman, but the chassis looks more like an IS-2. The most likely contender in my opinion is the KV-85, but that doesn’t jive 100% either. My guess is that the painting was done much later, and the artist used an anachronistic Russian tank design (I am only familiar with the designs of WWII). This is done all the time (See any WWII movie of the 70s).

  8. Spy D says:

It’s apparent that the artist who painted “The Liberation of Baghdad” modeled it directly on “The Liberation of Minsk 1944″. Nearly everything, including the building in background at left, is close to identical. Th only changes are adding a mosque and a helicopter, and changing the clothing styles. Anyone believing this is mere coincidence has a problem with objective analysis. But there will be those who refute it anyway…

  9. Spy D says:

By the way, nicely done to the person who matched these two up!

  10. felis_catus says:

lol take after each other indeed

  11. Jack P. says:

    Un. Be. Lievable.

  12. biff says:

I dunno, but I can’t shake the feeling that the Liberation of Baghdad was created by a GOP propagandist. You know, the same ones who lied their way into the war in the first place.

Much props to whomever came up with this.

  13. SKW says:

I certainly hope they look alike. I mean, they’re supposed to.

  14. Shin says:

In before inevitable Minsc & Boo comment.
Also, go for the eyes Boo! RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHH!!!

  15. bajatsa says:

That’s a pretty funny stuff. And I’ve just found out the painter’s name of that Baghdad Liberation masterpiece: it’s a surprisingly honorable Californian painter Sandow Birk. Using similar older canvases is a very common thing about him and seems to be the way to critisize the reality. It’s not a bad way but I don’t think I like it.

    • Remko says:

Shows you how easy it is to become an artist, just copy someone else his/her work, make some minor changes, and pawn it off as a parody. No thinking required, no creativity required, just the ignorance of the audience admiring it. Minimum effort maximum yield, come to think of it why am I not doing this???

      • bajatsa says:

Hehe… That’s it. But before you have to make yourself a name to convince the ignorant audience that your re-colored copy is a masterpiece. And add some knowledge of the subject because all the details must look natural. Now go buy paints, brushes and a beret. Eww…

      • asdf says:

Sure, ask P-diddly or whatever he goes by nowadays.

  16. DIBDUBDOO says:

Looks like artist rendered it off a t34 or IS1 but russian’s did use shermans.

  17. Sean says:

Supposedly “He takes these 15th-18th century masterpieces, and recasts them in modern yet powerful themes.”

But in my google searching, it looks like 95% of the time the fact that these are derivative and not original works is not mentioned.

    • ronstew says:

Fair enough. But it does not appear that he is trying to misrepresent his work – even if others don’t always include an attribution. But knowing this does make the TLL less funny. No GOTCHA anymore.

    • Enry says:

      Re-read the quote you quoted.

      That’s where it’s mentioned.

  18. blah says:

That’s kinda the point… hence the similar name and basically the EXACT SAME POSITIONS. DUH

  19. EpicFailGuy says:

    looks like fail

  20. Allie says:

It’s very obviously an appropriation. I hate lookalikes like this one.

  21. ZeRoX says:

    did they ever liberate baghdad??

  22. BatNeko says:

Should intentional homages even be eligible for this?

  23. dfd says:

i thought intentional TTL’s were not done?

  24. Ravenite says:

Too much of a coincidence. Someone must have run out of propoganda ideas.

  25. Sarah says:

    Yes Mikey..point well taken

  26. Russian says:

Looks like the artist was using the old painting as a reference and took the composition from it. LOL, AMERICAN propaganda.
The difference I see – Soviets freed Russian people from Nazi, Americans freed Iraqis from oil.

  27. AAAAGH says:

    IT’S …THE…OTHER WAY… AROUND AHHHHHH

    I quit this site!

  28. UpTheYingYang says:

This style of painting goes way back in Soviet Russia. So the artist is more likly to be trained in the Russian style of using previous works. But the artist could have been a TAD more original.

  29. Kempis Curious says:

Ironic Message(tm) seems to be “Oppressive Americans defeating Oppressive Saddam is like Oppressive Soviets defeating Oppressive Nazis”.

Bleah, going along with the current political fashions is hardly anything new for artists. I’d be more impressed with some creativity.

  30. Fawkes Mask-Wearing Anon says:

So, the American troops barged into Iraq and stole all their oil, right? How come all these foreign countries have oil contracts with Iraq now and the U.S. does not?
The world is much more complex than your GOP or DNC worldviews, you peons.

  31. Photoshopped!

    Somebody had to say it.

  32. l says:

its the bagdad that looks like minsk ;d
do not mistake history of art with your propaganda!
minsk was first and you copied it!

  33. FyreWytch says:

…This is intentional. The Liberation of Bagdhad is a satirical piece, referencing the Liberation of Minsk. :P

    • BBB says:

The real irony of the satire is that the people most often fooled by it are the ones who believe it’s actually pro-war propoganda. Essentially it becomes anti-pro-war propoganda.

  34. Ricky Maveety says:

It’s actually an homage, as many of Birk’s paintings and drawings are. To quote from an article: “These may be contemporary works, but they draw uninhibitedly from the past. Birk is a skilled draftsman and has the ability to adapt the styles as well as the subject matter from artists he admires–Gustave Dore, Honore Daumier, Frederick Church, and George Bellows. But he transforms their visions while rendering his own distinct commentary on contemporary culture.”

So, it’s supposed to look that way. It is not a rip off, and not a parody. and most people with even a passing knowledge of art will recognize that.

  35. Bill says:

Obviously, the artist, Sandow Birk, often uses older works of art and adds a modern perspective to them…

    http://www.sandowbirk.com/files/gimgs/25_injustice-leading.jpg

  36. Hayley says:

It’s art! Of course it’s supposed to look like it.

  37. Mechagodzilla says:

Who needs to be creative, when you can face phuk the original! Honestly, you can do this… But blatant plagiarism gets me kicked out of collage!?

This is a double standard good sir, a double standard!!

  38. DER says:

IT IS SUPPOSED TO!!!!! DUH. YOU ARE A DOLT!!!

  39. NanAshton says:

Uhm. It’s supposed to look alike. And as for the retard who pointed out that the tanks are different, the tools of war do tend to differ when there are sixty years separating then. Freaking moron.

  40. Cat says:

Stop being so disrespectful- that’s just a stupid move. Shut up about “retarded.” And, obviously, it’s a replica with certain details changed. You agree with the person who said that the tank had changed, so what’s your issue?

  41. Negrophobic says:

I wondur haow meny douhcebags I colud git tou repliy tuo mie coment jusst forr spleling evryething worng, ecxetp “I” fo coures…. becuzz ihtt shurr seams liek uh lott uv poeple du iht fourr noh gud danm reezin

  42. L says:

  43. Baz says:

Definitely is the exact same picture. Lazy bastards.

  44. joshua says:

it like the wwII marines raising the flag pic and the firmen on sept 11 raising the flag over the rubble

  45. 0xym0ron says:

    Congratulations, you just had TWINS

  46. Lolingrobot says:

    SAME FREAKING RUNNING KID. :0

  47. uni says:

in art circles this is called an homage. In stupid people circles this is called “OMG coincidence!!!”
