Possible homage?
Just looked up the voice actor for her, it’s a dude. I find that odd.
Yeah, wasn’t it the director or producer who voiced her?
Actually I had to look it up because I thought that the character, like they sometimes do, was based off the person who voiced them, which I thought was the woman on the left! It came as a shock to find out the director of the movie had done the voice, however after reading a bit I’m not surprised since apparently there are lots of women with that general look in fashion, and if you mix a bunch together and make them funsized then it looks just like that….
I read somewhere that he had actually asked for Lily Tomlin, and when she was auditioning, he kept telling her how to do the voice – to which she replied that he was doing it perfectly, so why shouldn’t he do it? So he did.
But it may be a legend, who knows
That’s a great story. In an interview on TV I heard someone (Ithink the director) say that people kept going up to him and saying, “You’ve based that character on XXX, haven’t you” and mentioning a particular person. He swears the character wasn’t based on any one individual.
i remember thinking about that lady when i saw the incredibles. totally reminds me of her
Total fail. Of COURSE it’s the same person. >_>
Nope Brad Bird did the voice.
I thought she looks more like Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter.
That was Emma Thompson.
She looks like my teacher.
the old lady also plays Gaia in the God of War Series
Edna Mode reminds me of costume designer Edith Head both in appearance and some mannerisms.
Yes, Edna Mode was somewhat modeled after Edith Head.
By the way, there a famous bit of grafitti in a Hollywood studio wardrobe storage room:
EDITH HEAD GIVES GOOD COSTUME
Even if that’s not true, it’s a win!
10 points for you.
Wasn’t the psychologist in Stranger Than Fiction identical to these two too? Kudos to anyone who can find a picture of her.
Well, yes, since that was also Linda Hunt. She seems to resemble herself in pretty much every role she plays.
Except in The Year of Living Dangerously!
According to the wiki for Edna Mode… Edna’s hairstyle, ultra-diminutive stature, and facial features also resemble actress Linda Hunt’s fashion editor character Regina Krumm, in Robert Altman’s 1994 film Prêt-à-Porter
I love edna! And I know someone who looks more like Edna than Ann C.

AGENT PENDERGAST PROPS
So, non else has actually watched the features from “The Incredibles” dvd?
that was “no one else”
I’m thinking this is a case of artists modeling reality. too similar to be a coincidence.
Edna mode is actually based off of Rei Kawakubo, the mind behind Comme de Garcons
She looks like Lily Tomlin too.
linda hunt voices edna mode so they mader her look like her
no she didn’t, Brad Bird did.
YES! I have always thought this.
I cant beleive this is in here, I absolutely made that connection when watching the incredibles!!
Whoa, I just flipped by that movie on TV last night and immediately said she looked exactly like Edna Mode
That was intentional. She voiced the character

Actually, try catching NCIS: Los Angeles. Linda Hunt is a regular cast member and her character in there is modeled after Edna Mode; here character supplies and designs the wardrobe that the NCIS agents wear on certain missions.
Brad Bird did Edna’s voice, and it’s not the first time a Pixar director stumbled into voicing a character: I believe it was John Lassiter who directed Finding Nemo, and did the voice of Crush, the Sea Turtle. They were having trouble finding an actor who had a good take on the voice, and finally realized that Lassiter had the best take of all. ( I could be wrong about it being Lassiter who directed and did the voice, though)
