Brad Bird did Edna’s voice, and it’s not the first time a Pixar director stumbled into voicing a character: I believe it was John Lassiter who directed Finding Nemo, and did the voice of Crush, the Sea Turtle. They were having trouble finding an actor who had a good take on the voice, and finally realized that Lassiter had the best take of all. ( I could be wrong about it being Lassiter who directed and did the voice, though)

Actually, try catching NCIS: Los Angeles. Linda Hunt is a regular cast member and her character in there is modeled after Edna Mode; here character supplies and designs the wardrobe that the NCIS agents wear on certain missions.

That’s a great story. In an interview on TV I heard someone (Ithink the director) say that people kept going up to him and saying, “You’ve based that character on XXX, haven’t you” and mentioning a particular person. He swears the character wasn’t based on any one individual.

I read somewhere that he had actually asked for Lily Tomlin, and when she was auditioning, he kept telling her how to do the voice – to which she replied that he was doing it perfectly, so why shouldn’t he do it? So he did.

But it may be a legend, who knows

Actually I had to look it up because I thought that the character, like they sometimes do, was based off the person who voiced them, which I thought was the woman on the left! It came as a shock to find out the director of the movie had done the voice, however after reading a bit I’m not surprised since apparently there are lots of women with that general look in fashion, and if you mix a bunch together and make them funsized then it looks just like that….
