I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure his real name is Dr. Robotnick, but Sonic and company call him Eggman as an insult.
He was only recently known in the US as Eggman. Before that, for those of use who were born in the 80s at least, it was Robotnik in the TV shows… then he started being referred to as “Eggman” in the games, so I assume that was the translation of his Japanese name or something of the like.
They used to change the names of characters quite a bit when they broguht stuff over from Japan.

they’re talking about the early games (Sega Genesis era) and the AMERICAN-MADE Sonic TV shows (SatAM Sonic and Adventures). since the early games had no voice acting in them and those two TV shows were made with an English language dub, well, your comment about “dumb dubs” is pointless.

Clearly someone who has never seen or played Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine (seriously, if you still have a Playstation2 get the Sonic Mega Collection…all the old Sonic games from the original to some of the Game-Gear and Saturn…gives me that warm nostalgic feeling)
I play it on xBox!! But then my controllers died, one wont stop going round in circles and the other just doesn’t work. I love that game, even though i fail at it. D: Still awesome.

I agree. In all the games I played on the Genesis and Game Gear, as well as the cartoon versions, he was Robotnik. I don’t know why they changed it, but at some point they started calling him Eggman in new games for some unknown reason, and in the Anime. I seem to recall that at the beginning of the Anime, he complained about being called Eggman, and said that his name was Robotnik, but after that, everyone called him Eggman. Maybe I’m imagining that part, but I think it happened. Robotnik is a better name than Eggman, anyway. And it is Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, so it is his real name.
Like I said above, he is shaped like an egg. Read the ‘Sonic Heroes’ instruction manuel, inside the game. It tells you everything.

Glad someone else remembers him being called “Dr. Robotnick” – recent shows have changed it to “Dr. Eggman” which is dumb.
I think it’s slightly more complicated- he’s always been called ‘Eggman’ in Japan, or something. Kind of like the Bowser/Koopa confusion.
That said, I was born in the eighties and avidly followed the comics. He will always be Doctor Robotnik to me.
Ah, yes. The comics. I agree. Robotnik will always be Robotnik, and Bowser will always be Bowser. I usually like the original Japanese names for characters, but those two will always have the names I grew up knowing and fighting.
Oh, and Princess Toadstool, too! I always figured her name was Peach Toadstool after Super Mario 64, though. Either way, I still think of her as Toadstool.

As for the whole Robotnik/Eggman feud; just stop it, okay? Dr. Robotnik = Dr. Eggman. I believe it’s just localization. A translation that occurred from JP to NA release. If you have eyeballs in your skull, you can clearly see in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, if you go to the top levels of Sky Fortress and look at the “rudders” there, it’ll clearly say “EGGMAN” on the sides, despite our beloved round villain being named Dr. Robotnik in the game manual (EN). Call them whatever you like, they’re the same character regardless- that, of course, can be argued further, when it comes to the good Doc’s transcendence from the games to the NA cartoon series.
