    Copyright infringe much?

  3. Rogahar says:

It’s exceptionally common for companies to rip off popular imagery from other countries to advertise their products with; Bollywood is particularly guilty I think, but there’s a massive number of other countries and companies who do it.

  4. an user says:

        all anime is lame, though.

        • SIGH says:

          Anime is so bad.

          • Alex says:

There were times when such things were called “Cartoons”. And nowadays just because its Japanese, they call it “Anime”.
I would simply call it “crap”.

            • Jackadoobie says:

Not all anime is good and not all anime is bad, same thing for about everything in this world. Most of what they actually try to market on tv is bad though.

              • Momo says:

                sooo yeaaaa

            • Seng says:

There are many horrible ones. Just don’t watch ones like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece. Watch Cowboy Bebob, Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist, FLCL, and some other ones that don’t drag on to eternity and you will change your mind. Besides there is a difference between cartoons and anime. One of the main things is the art styles but there are some other differences.

              • Lin says:

Hahaha, SOMEONE’s been watching the dubs on Cartoon Network. Obviously Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto can’t be that bad, or else the wouldn’t be the three most popular anime/manga series in the world.

Those others you mentioned are good as well, but aimed at a different age group, so it’s really not fair to compare them using words like “horrible.” I’m guessing you’re older than 12 or 13, so of course more mature titles would appeal to you.

                • Ralf says:

                  EVERYTHING POPULAR IS BAD

                • One Piece is OK as far as I’ve read, but Bleach and Naruto have flaws independent of their target age group. For example, Bleach over-populates itself with interesting characters and then is unable to give enough screen time to whichever ones a given viewer/reader likes most.

Naruto has a somewhat related problem. It sets up a lot of interesting characters and then proceeds to systematically kill them off as you become attached to them. It doesn’t help that the first few episodes are composed to give you the impression that the series is going to be lighter and more cheerful than it is. Also, the events after the timeskip (Shippuden in the anime) have resulted in the fan term “Deus-ex-machiningan” for the Sharingan. (I lost interest shortly before the timeskip and, these days, I spend most of my time programming or reading non-fiction)

There’s nothing inherently wrong with long-running series… but the longer a series gets, the more skill an author needs to keep the quality from slipping… especially if they wrote it as an open-ended thing. The short series tend to be of higher quality because the author can have some idea of how the entire story will go before they begin writing. In essence, the main problem with manga and anime is that, contrary to novelized fiction, they encourage length (something not all authors are skilled enough to pull off), ignorance of the purpose of proper story arcs in keeping plots vibrant, and the release schedule limits the author/artist’s ability to manage their time in a manner conducive to good plotting.

                  • PiGuy says:

Would it be considered irony to state that this is by far the longest response I’ve ever sen on this site? BECAUSE IT IS!

But I agree. Problem is, most people assume they’re only going to have one good idea in their life, so if it becomes a smash-hit, they refuse to let it go, because it becomes their livlihood in their life. Personally, I think such authors should create series of shorer stories in the same universe, but with different characters and plots and things so it doesn’t get stale. But I’m sure they’re just scared to abandon the one decent thing theyr’ve ever come up with.

                    • telefil says:

Keep in mind that a lot of Japanese artists, even the popular ones, don’t make a crapload of money with their work – they are slaves to the publishers who demand more of what’s making *them* (the publishers) money. So yes, Dragon Ball went thirty-five volumes over the original seven that Toriyama had envisioned; but cumulatively it did him a lot of good and now he can do kids’ books (storybooks), which has always been his dream.

              • Lolwut says:

In other words, Don’t watch the 4Kids versions

                • im in ur closet eating ur hats says:

            • KIA says:

There… is only ONE anime-cartoon, what ever, that everyone can safely say is good…

              Samurai Jack

            • kris says:

On a technicality, all “cartoons” are “anime” since anime stands for animation. Just saying.

              • Alex says:

                Who cares?
It’s a “Zeichentrickfilm” as we Germans say and there are those idiots who claim that own category “Anime” for those Japanse films. This is as absurd like every metal-band claims an own style for themselves like Metal, Death Metal, Speed Death Metal, and so on. Absurd.

          • the gameboy says:

so is the Powerglove, but we all shut up about that about 20 years ago…

        • Lin says:

That’s kind of a stupid thing to say, considering someone who thinks “all anime is lame” couldn’t possibly stomach having to sit through “all anime” in order to form such an opinion.

Don’t talk about things you don’t know about, sweetie.

        • j says:

  6. pookie says:

all that anime bullshyt looks alike. horrid horrid crap. worst thing to ever come to america. anime is all that is evil.

    • Pugiron says:

Hey now Anime is not as bad as your mom, take that back!

      • telefil says:

So young! Every generation thinks its own cartoons are “the bomb”; I grew up with reruns of Bugs and Wile E. Coyote, as well as some of the first slaughters I mean attempts at bringing anime mainstream (“Robotech”, “Battle of the Planets”, “Astroboy”), and so I regard a lot of 90s cartoons with a jaded eye ;)

That said, I regard anime (referring to Japanese animation) with the same critical eye with which I regard western cartoons; some are good, some not so good. Everyone’s standards and preferences are different.

      • Cannibale says:

        CatDog and Rugrats FTW.

    • Some girl. says:

      Read Lin’s comment please.

  7. Cisco54 says:

There are good things AND bad things about it, just like anything else. The genres of anime include everything from kiddie shows to hardcore porn, and everything in between. Saying all of that is bad is simply ignorant. This middle aged anthropologist happens to like a lot of it and finds it culturally illuminating, but I know I can’t stop people from being judgmental about things they know nothing about.

    • Opi says:

Before being an anime, Dragon Ball was a manga. I totally agree with Cisco54. I was about to say the exact same thing he said when I read his comment. There are some really good animes out there, and a wide variety of genres to choose from.
Before flaming something, you should actually give it a try, or at least inform yourself.
      Peace.

      • Jackadoobie says:

During my undergrad I took a class called Japanese History through Manga. It was very interesting.

      • Cisco54 says:

Actually, I’m of the XX chromosome persuasion (what can I say? My sis and I were ‘Pancho and Cisco’ as kids). My daughter called Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon ‘Gateway Anime’ – like gateway drugs. I thought that was a great observation!

    • Joshua says:

Aaaah a fellow anthropologist, but indeed I fully agree with you. I’ve been reading quite a bit of manga (and watching anime) lately. We see cartoons are for kids, they (the japanese for example) don’t. And why couldn’t they be for adults?
Gotta love the japanese culture though..

      • telefil says:

Some Japanese cartoons are in fact for kids. The Japanese just don’t see any specific medium as being only for a specific age demographic – thus there are cartoons and comics for adults (and no, the adult ones are not necessarily porn), and lots of other “kids’ stuff” that’s designed with adults in mind.

      • Cisco54 says:

Yep, great anthropology for sure in anime – not just as an observation of japanese culture, but the interface with american culture is interesting too. Went to an anime con once, and I do believe it was some of the best people watching I’ve done in a long time – so many sub-cultures within it. Oh, and by the way, I told a linguist friend about ‘lolspeak’ – particularly the lolcat Bible, and she thought that was cool, too.

        • Joshua says:

Hehe indeed. It (anime) used to be for the geeks and nerds, but then I got into it (it’s hard to avoid if you’re interested in asian culture) and its amazing the variety of people that watch/read it. From (eurpean) businesspeople to even rappers ^^.
It’s also very interesting when they talk about some version of christianity (full metal alchemist) and how it is a totally different viewpoint.

          • Lin says:

Does FMA really discuss Christianity? *stepped out of the fandom loooooong ago* I kind of assumed it was just a generic monotheistic religion, but I could be wrong, as I was a squealing 16-year-old fangirl when I was into it.

            • Joshua says:

Well as far as I can remember it talks about a western religion which had only 1 god that used to be very strict but lost ‘power’. The churches look very much like cathedrals and I think it also referred to crucifixtion. But I might be wrong too..I haven’t read it in a while and that was just the impression I got a few years ago..^^

        • Joshua says:

I know I know, double post. But I just checked the Lolcat Bible.
          It was hilarious xD

  8. Queen of the World says:

That is so racist. On behalf of all bad Japanese Anime characters and high fructose corn syrup filled juice products being peddled to innocent little kids worldwide, I demand a public apology.

  9. Andrea says:

Vegeta, what does the scouter say about this picture’s interest level?

    IT’S OVER 9000!!!

  10. Daniel says:

I actually thought it was Gohan the first time I saw it…

  11. Zoop says:

I think it’s absolutely hilarious how people who’ve never seen anything more than Pokemon and whatever Toonami used to sanitize into kiddy-TV seem to suddenly urge themselves into a tizzy proclaiming cartoons from a foreign country as “gay” and “childish.”
It’s laughably immature, no matter the subject. Would you make fun of someone who buys phones from a foreign country? Are they “gay and childish?” What about imported cars? Gosh, they’re so childish, aren’t they?
It’s just another product, marketed to American people who enjoy it. So stop proving yourselves the epitome of immature, and keep your itchy little fingers in check when the urge to be a culturally ignorant potato-being rears its ugly head.
Unless, of course, I used too many big words for you all to comprehend. In which case feel free to reply with a “ur gay lol” or something to that extent.
Signed Robert L. Copenhagen, who openly enjoys manga, manhwa, and all manners of foreign pop culture. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.

    • telefil says:

      Mmm, potato-people…

I miss being in Japan, Mr. Copenhagen, partly because buying the toys, models, and comics that I enjoyed didn’t come with a “jeez, that’s for kids” look at the cash register (though sometimes it came with a gentle, “you know that [model kit] needs to be put together, right?”, which always made me laugh.

Thank you for your thoughtful post!

    • saddie says:

it’s not that i think anime is gay, it’s just lame.
it’s more hilarious how manchildren take their anime so seriously.

  12. Sara Pulis says:

Toriyama does lots of “character designs” for different companies, games, and the like. It just so happens that he has only ONE face and three hair styles which get recycled ad infinitium.

    • telefil says:

Have you seen much of Toriyama’s work? Yes, it has a distinctive look, but a lot of his newer stuff doesn’t fit the “recycling” theory.

      • Sara Pulis says:

Yeah, I’ve seen some of the newer stuff – got Blue Dragon recently. Still looks recycled to me. I’m not saying it’s bad. So long as people keep paying him for decades-old work, power to him.

  13. Damian says:

Hmmm i pretty much like all anime except for Neon Genisus Evengalion (spelling so wrong there), FLCL, and Paranoia Agent i only didn’t like them because they were so confusing i could never figure out what the heck was going on and at the end i was like WTF thats the end what just happened.

    • telefil says:

Yeah, the creator of Eva was frustrated when the network threatened to cancel the show after the scene with Misato that implied adult relations – so he sort of gave up on his vision for the series.

  14. Tim says:

Wow. Is plagiarism the word for when it’s a picture?

  15. phuckyomomma says:

this is just plain lazy as phuck

  16. Seeeks says:

I don’t think anime in general is lame, it’s just that a lot of series are stretched out because they might be based on an ongoing manga and if the TV series has a new episode five days a week and the manga is drawn on a much slower schedule, they would run out of base material if they didn’t come up with stuff of their own to fill the gaps. But often it’s just people boasting about their fighting skills and such. Also when people get obsessed with being a fan, it makes outsiders feel alienated.

  17. Kiba says:

Dood..it looks as if they chopped the originals head off…and doodled the body in Photoshop. They were ignorant enough to make the body outline think and keep the head the same thin line.

  18. np says:

Japanese cartoon TLL all other Japanese cartoons.

  19. RAWWAR says:

i think they copied the head and used a diffrent body. and yet, the love of anime spreads on…………….

  20. RAWWAR says:

anime is not gay or lame, its the best dang thing invented science electricity!

  21. Bree says:

I think its the same guy who drew those….

  22. tommy says:

I’m pretty sure that gohan’s sons name is Goten. Might be wrong though

    • Lin says:

Nope, Goten is Gohan’s significantly younger brother, but given their age difference, it’s easy to make that mistake.
Gohan has a daughter named Pan, though.

  23. Ricky Maveety says:

Well, Spanish language ad, so I have no idea where it’s from or what the copyright laws are in that country. Also, while it is clearly the same character, the ad company might have actually paid for the rights to use the image. I doubt it, but anything is possible.

  24. BettyButtonn says:

Obviously this is the same picture, it kinda makes me sad, because i absolutely LOVE DBZ. :(

  25. moongirl9 says:

at first i was thinking, GOKU!!!

  26. and then on the same dam page it shows TWO ADS FOR DBZ!!!

  27. Kandehkitteh says:

    Same hair,same face(sort of),only 2 words 4 this:
    COPYRIGHT INFRIGMENT!!!!

  28. Lolingrobot says:

Change the skin, ad another couple hairs sticking out of its head…

  29. connor349 says:

    they stole that for sure

  30. OTAKU says:

TO THOSE WHO INSULT ANIME/MANGA: Gee, thanks for the INSULTS. I am an otaku and proudly flaunt it. Next time-when us otaku are around, you say “I’m just personally not a fan of anime.”

    AND ORIGINAL COMMENT: LOLOLOLOLS! ROFL!

  31. yoliee says:

itss not fair!! they copy … COPY DBZ fans aren’t happy

  32. BoogaBoogaBoo says:

What happened to the tard fight? I WANT MORE TARDS!!!

  33. Leia says:

hahaha these comments are too funny. im completely an anime freak which nobody i know believes because i apparently dont ‘look the part’ whatever that meansss…. :S ?
ANYWAY, i grew up with dbz and this actually makes me pretty mad. its the same down to the last detail. Though some anime does look alike, this is really pushing it.. im amazed that someone was that stupid to copy something so popular. its a signature style of anime and anyone who so much as just watched a few episodes would recognize it.
