  1. McFirst says:

    FIRST !

  2. lindsay says:

That’s because they based the Spike character on Billy Idol

  3. Katie says:

I see what you did there. ;)

  4. Shawna says:

They even imply on an episode in season 7 that Billy Idol actually based his look on Spike.

    • taisce says:

Actually, since Billy Idol met stardome in the early 80’s and the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer did not start airing until much later than that, I do believe the facts would demostrate that Spike based his look on Billy Idol.

      • Leujin says:

Or, you know, since it was fictional television and, within the context of the show, they were saying Billy Idol based his look on Spike…

        • Jane St.Clair says:

Yes, since the scene in question was actually a flashback scene to either the late 70’s/early 80’s. If I could just nerd out for a minute I believe it was when they were showing where Spike killed the previous slayer and thereby got his nickname. He was definitely more Billy Idol in the scene, with his hair spiked up and the clothes.

          • Lizzy says:

“I believe it was when they were showing where Spike killed the previous slayer and thereby got his nickname.”

Minor correction to your comment, Spike had his nickname LONG before his encounter with Nikki Wood in the 70’s. He adopted the name not too long after he first became a vampire (because he enjoyed torturing his victims with railroad spikes)

            • Bookaholic says:

I think it was just the one victim, and it was the guys idea in the first place.

“I’d rather have a railroad spike driven through my head than listen to his…” etc, etc.

Oh, and in the context of the show, Billy Idol took his look from Spike. I’m just sayin’, that’s how they worked it…

              • Lizzy says:

Yeah, there’s the guy in the flashback that says that, but I believe that the idea is that it’s because of what that guy said that prompts Spike to subsequently use railroad spikes once he becomes a vampire (otherwise, if it had just been the one victim, I doubt it would’ve made it into one of Giles’ books that he gained the nickname because he liked using railroad spikes to torture victims (note the plural) in Spike’s first episode ‘School Hard’)

            • Jane St.Clair says:

I thought he killed the slayer with the railroad spike but I will admit that it has been a long time since I’ve seen Buffy and I am probably wrong. I do remember that William the Bloody ended up being because his poetry was “so bloody awful”. I had mixed feelings about the flashback. On one hand I liked it but on the other hand I feel that they were taking away all of Spike’s badassness.

              • Torak says:

No, he killed Nikki Wood by snapping her neck on the subway. He also stole her coat, which he still wears.

I’m loving this discussion of Buffy canon :D

                • Lizzy says:

Torak said: “I’m loving this discussion of Buffy canon :D

I’ve actually been having a “Buffy” marathon of sorts these past several weeks, going through all the seasons…so some of this stuff is kind of fresh in my mind *lol*

        • Brandon says:

          Hilarious, Leujin….taisce, u idiot.

      • forge says:

Except for the part where the man William who became the vampire Spike was born in the late 18th century.

    • lindi says:

      I was just thinking that.

  5. INventive says:

And again, it should be Spike Totally Looks Like Billy Idol. Yeesh.

    • Gordonski says:

How would that change the information that they both look alike?
      If a=b then b=a.

      • ryszard says:

Because one came long before the other. “a” camest firstest.

        • Gordonski says:

Now, that’s a tricky one. Given the fact that Billy Idol is compared to the fictive character of Spike and not to the actor James Marsters (who might eventually look different when not acting on Buffy) and bearing in mind the fact that Spike, being a vampire, was born a looong time ago, he was probably there before Billy Idol (unless the latter is undead as well, which I can neither confirm nor deny).
Besides, it’s not always important to come first…

      • INventive says:

If A came first in Pop Culture, then A would not equal B, B would equal A. The point is to say, Shirley Temple looks like a Cupie Doll, not a Cupie Doll looks like Shirley Temple, see?

  6. Del says:

Got to agree with Shawna, Billy Idol totally looks like Spike. The episode is Sleeper on season 7.

  7. Pepe Silvia says:

I believe Spike partly based his look on Sid Vicious. And then Billy Idol took it from him.

  8. Jim says:

They both look completely different. That means they are exactly alike!

  9. JTB says:

Is it bad that I looked at the first picture and thought “Brigitte Nielsen looks like who?” LOL

    • A Random Pooka says:

Not at all! I think that’s comment win! I had to look up James Masters on imdb, then realize it is MARSTERS, not Masters. Then dig through his filmography and realize I’ve never seen him before. Nor have I ever seen more than about 15 minutes of Buffy. Knock on wood.

    • Gordonski says:

Not really. Mount a pair of plastic boobies on Billy Idol and wham… Brigitte Nielson! Maybe this an epic hoax: Brigitte Nielson doesn’t really exist, it’s actually just Billy Idol in drag…

  10. shoobah says:

I was going to say something when I saw this picture, but then all the drool spilled from my mouth.

  11. Kilren says:

Spike is waaaaaaaaaaay more yummy than Billy Idol, anyway. And it’s James Marsters, not Masters.

  12. Lindz says:

And either way they are both freaking hot!….or were…./when they looked like that….

  13. Ant says:

If you’d watched Buffy you’d already know this.

    Pop Culture reference FAIL.

  14. Nekuyo says:

FAIL! It shouldn’t count when it was intentional.

  15. Rachel says:

I was just thinking this the other day! Especially in one episode where the show Spike in the 70’s.

  16. sinfonie says:

Billy Idol is a pussy. Spike rules.

  17. Emerson says:

Since Spike is like totally hotter than either Sid Vicious or Billy Idol, and they explained it in an episode of Buffy, Spike created that whole look and attitude, and those two other old guys stole it from him. Totally.

And The Ramones are a total rip-off of Green Day. Gah!

  18. Ashton says:

That’s actually the point really. But Spike had it first :D

  19. candice says:

    SEX.

  20. Frank says:

As has been mentioned, the Spike character was based on Billy Idol, which made it possible for the character in the series to claim it was the other way around.

    • Cassi says:

total truth. It supposed to be a funny joke that Spike says they copied him. because he is totally a copy of billy idol.

  21. GrinOf TheCat says:

They should enter the Double Stuff Comp. against the Manning Brothers

  22. Nos says:

Ahh, Spike. And the other link in the comments to Punk!Spike. It’s so nice to see you here.

  23. Another milestone in the inevitable descent of this website to “This banana looks like this banana.”

  24. Mille says:

Actually, Billy Idol stole his look from… never mind. Has he been here?

  25. ShadowQuest says:

Ya’d think they’d at least use a picture of Shirtless!Spike for the look-alike. I’m pretty sure there’s a couple of them floating around out there somewhere.

  26. lespikefan says:

Hate to point the obvious out but in the real world Spike was based on Sid Vicious. In the TV show Buffy it was revealed that Spike says Billy Idol stole his image. The coat came from one of the slayers, Nikki Wood in 1977 that Spike killed. Spike based his look from Sid Vicious and Billy Idol stole the look.

  27. lindsay says:

About 5 or 6 years ago I saw James Marsters and his band Ghost of the Robot in London. It was a little disappointing. Kind of expecting to see Buffy’s “Spike”, but of course he was that much older – in his forties. Bleach blonde hair outgrown – just plain brown and very short. Music wasn’t bad … they’ve broken up now. *sigh* When you watch Buffy re-runs it’s easy to forget how time goes by. In the final episodes of the final season, in flashbacks when they tried to make “Spike” look like he did when he was first turned, you can see they had a hard job to make him up.

    • forge says:

Hehe, Marsters was 40 by the time the show ended. They were always kind of indiscriminate about saying his actual age.

  28. Anonny-nonny says:

DUH! So many of these are like “hey, thing 2 looks like thing 1!” Um, duh, because thing 2 was MODELED ON thing 1. Sigh. Rampant stupidity.

  29. Aceia says:

The issue here is that we are currently in our universe, not the Buffy universe. In our universe Billy Idol came first because Josh Wheaton had not yet invented the character Spike. In the Buffy universe, Spike may have come first, but since we don’t live in a fictional universe the point is moot.

    • Alana says:

But in our actual universe, James Marsters looks like Billy Idol because he plays Spike in the fictional universe. It’s not like he looks like him anymore or before he took on the role of Spike.

Regardless, Spike is SUPPOSED to look like Billy Idol. Joss Whedon jokes in the show that Billy Idol took his look from Spike. Actually, I think it was Buffy who made the reference when asked about him by one of the potentials in the last season. She says that Idol actually got the look from Spike. So, this is pretty much a “duh” comparison.

      • Bec says:

It was Buffy that said that, but it wasn’t to one of the potentials… She said it to the bouncer of a nightclub in the episode Sleeper.

      • L. says:

People actually watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer…?

        LMAO xD

        • You fail. From Wikipedia:

The series usually reached between four and six million viewers on original airings.[1] Although such ratings are lower than successful shows on the “big four” networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox),[2] they were a success for the relatively new and smaller WB Television Network.[3] Reviews for the show were positive,[4] and it was ranked #41 on the list of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time as well as #2 on Empire’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. Buffy was also voted #3 in TV Guide’s Top 25 Cult TV Shows of All Time and included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.[5] It was nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards, winning a total of 3 Emmys. The WB network ceased operation on September 17, 2006 after airing an “homage” to its “most memorable series”, including the pilot episodes of Buffy and its spin-off Angel.[6] Buffy’s success has led to hundreds of tie-in products, including novels, comics, and video games. The series has received attention in fandom (including fan films), parody, and academia, and has influenced the direction of other television series.[7]

          • Madcapfeline says:

Yes, and the majority of the population voted for Bush…. twice. Don’t underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. Hell, look at the Twilight phenomenon. Just because it’s popular, doesn’t make it good.

  30. Rina says:

Well, actually, Billy Idol stole Spike’s look :) lol

  31. Ro says:

Spike is wayyy hotter than Billy Idol HANDS DOWN!!

  32. Rachel says:

Obvious much? Huh. They should have, like, made an origins episode in which Spike references how Billy Idol stole his look from him.

  33. Yo says:

Spike totally looks like Billy Idol

  34. Boo Dreadly says:

Spike totally looks like Billy Idol, not the other way round!

  35. ziggy1321 says:

God I’ve been geeking out and having a Buffy marathon for the past few days. He looks way more like Billy Idol when they show the flashback of him killing Nikki Woods when he had spikey hair and lots of neckalces. And Billy Idol totally stole his look ;) If you go by what he said.

  36. HellenBackagain says:

Yes… and James is the hotter of the two and can pull the look off way better. (^_^) mmmmmm

  37. Nicole says:

Line from season seven episode ‘Sleeper’
(after bouncer asks something about the Billie Idol wannabe) Buffy- Actually, Bille Idol stole…

  38. really great website, highly recommend it and i will bookmark and come back. keep up the good work.
