All I want to know is why this person has become famous in the first place? It’s not like her music is anything that hasn’t already been done before, far better. Lords of Acid comes to mind. And costumes? GWAR. Mushrooomhead. Slipknot. And of course, KISS FTW.

Actually, even tho the genre is one that is continually forced at American culture, Lady Gaga has her own spin of it. Using words like percussion isnt something any of the other poplets have attempted to utilize nor would they even imagine trying. Also, shes very unique in how she presents herself. Im not a fanboy, nor do I even care about current pop, but I will say when the day is over I do have a lot of respect for the Gaga and what she does. I know its easier to hate on stars than respect them, but this is one popstar that deserves every ounce of fame she gets.

I’m sorry, but just because she (or some hired song writer) is able to string together a line of rhymes and consonances at the expense of meaning, does NOT make her deserving. She certainly doesn’t have hired songwriters, in fact she got her recording contract while working as a songwriter for other pop stars at Interscope records.
She actually has vocal and artistic talent, in my opinion, from seeing her live performances consisting of just her and an electric piano.

You’re so ironic, forgive me if I haven’t fixed your post enough, but those are the things which stood out to me. Anyways, who cares if it’s autotuned, if she can sing (and she can, youtube her singing live) and write her own music, we then what more do you want? People with that much talent cannot have only 15 minutes, that would be a crime. I think it’s great that a pop star who actually writes and performs all of her own music, every single note, (WITH NO LIP SYNCING – EVER) has finally come out on top. Not to mention someone who is entirely self-manufactured in her style, image and dance. Her own clothes, her own choreography, etc. It’s impressive. Whether its your type of music or not, you’ve got to hand it to her. She’s the real deal.
My daughter draws ponies in crayon all by herself and composes the pictures. It doesn’t make them worth showing the world and calling great art.
I will give Lady Gaga credit for being directly involved with everything in her music and image. She just really sucks at the whole thing. Too bad, she doesn’t have a bad voice, just no other talent. Shock does not equal talent. Look at Marilyn Manson. Shock does not equal talent. The first album was great there, though. Before he/they went all shock value.
Regardless of whether you think her music or style hold any type of worth, you cannot deny the facts.
1) She is exceedingly popular
2) She (as DKN says) writes and performs all of her own stuff (more than we can say for the VAST majority of pop stars since … ever).
3) Her “shock” style is getting her the attention, whether it involves “talent” or not.
And if you’re going to compare her to Marilyn Manson, perhaps you should reconsider. Quite a lot of Manson’s work was either created by, produced by, or heavily influenced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails … so it’s not an equal comparison. You can’t compare her against KISS either, as that’s a full band vs. one person …
Perhaps the best comparison for shock artists would be Alice Cooper. Many people would consider Alice Cooper’s music and style to be talentless, but he has been quite famous for quite some time, for many of the same reasons Lady GaGa is now.
You’re entitled to your own opinion, of course; but having an opinion does not make all differing opinions incorrect. As far as your daughter is concerned … perhaps you should consider showing her art to the world. God knows children today need support in their artwork, and who’s to say it’s not great?

She transcends shock value. I went to her show last week. It was a tad raunchy at times, but for the most part the in-your-face-shock stuff was very minimal. Everything she did and said had a point to it.

You are exactly correct with your Lady Gaga comments. At age sixty four, I have witnessed much from the music industry; but totally respect Lady Gaga.
I think some merely take a glance at her unique look, and make assumptions. She is so much more than that; an all around talent, and more importantly, a very nice and thankful young lady.
I purchased her CD ….Oh, I purchased Pinks Funhouse Tour CD also.

Jannie… I wanna hang out with you. I am a classically trained musician and Gaga had me at the SNL performance. She’s talented enough to make me drive to Vancouver from Seattle and fly to NYC to see 2 nights of The Monster Ball. She’s great, and I literally have NO interest in pop music. She is interesting and seems like a truly nice person.

Lady GaGa is incredibly talented. She could do anything she wants with music; she could be a classical pianist if she wanted. She’s got a great voice, amazing talent, and fantastic creativity. And I love her outlandish outfits.

Just because you don’t appreciate what pop music is or what pop culture is about doesn’t mean that members of that “grouping” are horrible people or, in your under-educated terminology, that they “suck” Lady GaGa is not my favorite pop artist but you can not deny the success of her act/look/music. The music industry survives because new and different artists come to the forefront everyday. Not that I was alive when “KISS” came into their own but I would be willing to bet my rediculus salary that they were considered “weird” by the masses of their day and yet, now we respect them as a “classic.” The point is, time will tell and who are we to judge especially when the facts are overwhelmingly in her favor.

@Danny, yes, you’re right. I do protect my children. However, popstar’s record companies are relentless on promoting this music on children’s, CHILDREN’S stations. So, obviously, this music is meant to be sold to small kids. Songs like Poker Face that I can process, but lyrics from her other song about Disco Sticks shouldn’t be on an eight year old’s lips.
When there was MTV, it was ONE station with videos, but even what was considered ‘risque’ in the 80’s and even 90’s is nothing compared to the soft core porn videos some of these ‘artistes’ are putting out for the sake of love and art ‘and teaching kids to be themselves’. That’s all fine and dandy but they play both sides so they can sell their music.
Some of this music should not be put on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. NO, because if I put the TV on for my kids, on a KIDS station, I am CHOOSING that station as safe. There should be more responsibility by the TV programmers and record companies promoting and marketing to children. CHILDREN!
